Next Week’s Gospel: Mk 1:1-8 Turn to Page 6 for a complete list of the weekly readings! A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Advent is once again here with us, ushering us into the new year of the Church. The Season of Advent has a two-fold character. On one hand, it is our spiritual preparation for celebrating Christmas, the birth of Christ among us. On the other hand, it is a reminder of His second coming at the end of time when he comes again to judge the living and the dead. In this most sacred Season, our Scripture readings contain some valuable pointers warning us to be ready and prepared when Christ comes again in glory. For all of us who believe in the Lordship of Christ, everything centers around the Day of His Coming. Every day of our life must be lived in anticipation of the day when we see the Lord face to face. In this world we seal our fate with the choices we make and we deem it wise as people of faith to choose only the things that have eternal consequences in preparation for the life to come. The things that have eternal consequences are acts of love and compassion, the only ones we can take with us from this life to the next as other things we have to leave behind.

During the days before to Christmas, we can benefit from giving some time to reflect on the purpose of our lives, what we are doing now to accomplish that purpose, and how we are approaching the one great test that really matters - our personal meeting with the Lord. During the Advent Season, the Church calls for a new depth of sincerity in the practice of our faith. Prayer, penance, and works of mercy are necessary preparations for the coming of the Lord. Advent provides an opportunity for us to look around and see what things in our lives that need improvement, to see how we have failed, and to find ways in which we can do better. If prayer has been pushed to the sideline, now is the chance to make a fresh start. Whatever our past may be and no matter how far we have wandered away, God is only too willing to look lovingly on us. His arms are always outstretched to welcome us home. Above all, Advent is a time to deepen our friendship with God by reflecting on His great love for us in sending His Son as our Redeemer. When we allow the greatest message of divine love to sink in our hearts, we are moved in return to show our love for Him. If we do so, our vision of Christ will become clearer and a driving force in our lives. Let us have a most prayerful and meaningful Advent celebration here at St. Mary, in your own homes, and anywhere we go. When the Lord comes, may He find us ready to welcome Him.

Sincerely Yours In Christ, Fr. Burt Absalon, Pastor
