8 // 2018-19 Program girls hockey president’s letter

ned Forsberg NEW TRIER President, New Trier Girls Hockey GIRLS HOCKEY It is with pleasure that we welcome all the fans of high school hockey who support the 2018-2019 New Trier programs. This season marks the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the girls program. We are very lucky to have a rich legacy to draw upon that provides us with a OFFICERS: strong foundation on which to adjust to the President changing needs of the players and families we Ned Forsberg serve. From the onset, our goals were primarily Vice President twofold: (1) to provide an additional skating Mike Sennett opportunity for the strongest players to further develop their skills in a low-risk atmosphere, Secretary and (2) to create a comprehensive high school program, as similar to a school sport Stephanie Graves as possible, where girls could continue to play the great game of hockey that we love. Treasurer We are very fortunate to live in communities where ice hockey is an integral part of Jeff Melgard the youth sports tradition. But simply the availability of girls who have had exposure to hockey doesn’t ensure the success of the program. A key ingredient from the very beginning has been to have FUN. Without it we would have fallen short of our objectives. Every effort is made to make available a full and well-rounded experience BOARD MEMBERS: to enable the student athlete to achieve her highest personal and athletic potential by James Burnham embracing a lifestyle dedicated to competition, integrity, and self-discipline. Ned Forsberg Stephanie Graves The Varsity team last year was fortunate to be able to win the Girls High School Sheri Herd State Championship at the United Center, an event that they will remember for the rest Jeff Melgard of their lives. While our teams have enjoyed many successes on and off the ice over Shari Olshansky the years, the real accomplishment is how NTGH has contributed to the development Michael Sennett of so many young women. We take pride in helping to prepare these young women for Jean Yang success, not only in athletic endeavors, but in all aspects of their lives. Our alumni have included many individuals fortunate enough to play Division I, Division III and WEB MASTER: Club hockey as well as other sports in college, and participate in women’s and coed David Carroll hockey leagues after that. But our alumni do far more than just continue to play hockey and enjoy other athletic activities. They excel in a broad range of careers and ACTION PHOTOGRAPHER: endeavors, providing a significant contribution to the communities they live in. Faith Zelinsky This year has presented us with significant challenges. The growth of girls hockey in Illinois, particularly in the northern suburbs, has encouraged more Tier II organizations to field girls teams that also serve high school aged players. These additional teams provide more options for many of the girls that we have traditionally served, particularly at the 16U and 19U levels, and for girls living in communities where there is no high school affiliation for girls ice hockey. This is a natural evolution as the number of girls playing hockey in the area increases, and factored prominently in our difficult decision to field only one team this year. NTGH would not be what it is without the significant contribution of time, effort, and talent by all of the players, parents, and volunteers over the years who have kept the program alive, growing, and changing to meet the needs of the players. We are especially grateful to all the coaches who have worked with the girls, helping to teach them not only the game of hockey but also the values and skills to enable them to excel in all they do. May all the New Trier hockey teams have a great season! I hope everyone will follow the activities of our Varsity girls team on our website at www.newtriergirlshockey. com and bring a friend to a game. If you have questions, concerns or comments about the program, please do not hesitate to bring them to my attention as it is the most productive way to help us improve what we are offering.

GO GIRLS! Ned Forsberg President, New Trier Girls Hockey

Heart of the team award Wyatt Marshall The Heart of the Team Award was established to honor Ellery Stern, a New Trier hockey player who tragically lost his life in a car accident. It is designed to recognize a senior who stands out as an example of dedication, motivation, desire and courage. He is supportive of his teammates and reflects the overall values of the team and the New Trier Hockey Club. This senior leads by example, pushing his teammates to be the best on the ice, as well as in the classroom and in life. This teammate is the proverbial glue that holds the family together. The Heart of the Team recipient for the 2017-18 season is WYATT MARSHALL. Wyatt loved hockey from the first minute he laced up a pair of skates. He learned to skate at the Winnetka Ice Arena and started playing travel hockey as a Minor Mite while in kindergarten. Each year he would quickly bond with his new teammates and they would build a family both on and off the ice. Wyatt will always remember his final game playing for NT which ended in a loss to St.Rita after four sudden death overtime periods in the State play in games. Wyatt recognized and appreciated the immense time commitment and dedication each of his coaches devoted to his hockey teams. He learned something different from every one of them and will carry the lessons he learned on the ice into the future by continuing to trust his teammates, enjoy competition and keep the good and bad moments in proper perspective. Wyatt is currently a Freshman at Cornell University and a fan of the Big Red hockey team.

Bill Saunders Award Costa Pavlopoulos The Bill Saunders Award was established in 1991 to honor the memory of Bill Saunders who loved hockey and devoted countless hours to the New Trier Hockey Club. This player demonstrated strong leadership and achievement both on and off the ice. He is committed not only to his team but also to the New Trier Hockey Club and his school. The recipient exemplifies good sportsmanship and respects his teammates. The recipient of the 2017-2018 season is COSTA PAVLOPOULOS. Costa started his youth hockey career with the Wilmette Braves then continued his youth hockey career with the Falcons where he developed as a player and a leader. Costa joined the New Trier Hockey Club his Junior Year of High School where he was reunited with his Wilmette teammates. He played on the New Trier Hockey Green team his Junior and Senior year. He was Captain of the Green Team his Senior year. A highlight of Costa’s hockey career was being a two time State champion. In addition to hockey, Costa played New Trier Baseball his Freshmen and Sophomore year. He was a member of Tri-Ship and was an SHL All Academic. Costa is currently a Freshman at the University Of Illinois. He will always remember the great friendships he made with his New Trier teammates and the love of playing one of the best sports! Thank you NT Green!

DR. RICHARD RENN SCHOLASTIC AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD Hunter Roggekamp Dr. Richard Renn was one of many founders of the Winnetka and New Trier Hockey Club programs. He was very involved, not only in the successful development of these programs, but also in the health and safety of the individual players. This award was established in recognition of his commitment to the New Trier Hockey Club. The award is given to the senior who has earned the highest academic achievement while at New Trier High School. The recipient for the 2017-2018 season is HUNTER ROGGEKAMP.

Hunter’s interest in hockey was sparked when he saw Rafe Aybar running early morning training sessions. After eating many breakfasts at the Centennial Ice Rink while his sister figure skated, he begged to take hockey lessons and soon it was his turn to wake up early to learn from Rafe. From House to Travel and then back to House, Hunter played his entire youth hockey career at Wilmette Hockey.

When he started New Trier, he was excited to play with higher intensity and honored to play for New Trier. Looking down at his green shorts the first game was a surreal moment. Freshman year he enjoyed reuniting with former teammates and meeting new teammates on New Trier’s first JV2 team. Sophomore year he was elected an assistant captain for Gray and led the league in points. Moving to White his junior year and then Green his senior year, Hunter strived to play all-out to contribute to the teams’ successes.

In addition to hockey, Hunter worked in the Math Resource Room and was a Bridge Builder during junior year. During his senior year he was a Chemistry SILC. Hunter is currently a freshman at the studying engineering.

VINCENT T. HITCHCOCK SCHOLARSHIP AWARD Maureen McNerney In honor of the father of a former New Trier Girls Hockey player, the Vince Hitchcock Award was established in 2012 to recognize his leadership example and volunteer contribution to the Illinois hockey community and to NTGH. This scholarship award is presented annually to the graduating senior with positive enthusiasm and philanthropy toward her teammates and coaches, a genuine love and respect for the game of hockey, and a friendly and compassionate spirit. The 2018 award recipient is MAUREEN MCNERNEY. Maureen comes from a long line of New Trier hockey players. Her father, Dan, played on the first New Trier hockey team in 1973, and her sister, Shannon, and her brother, Daniel, both played four years of high school hockey for New Trier. Maureen started playing hockey as a Mite in the Winnetka house league. After playing on an all-girls U10 Winnetka Warriors travel team, of which she was elected Captain, Maureen went on to play six years of AAA hockey for the Young Americans and Team Illinois. As her senior year approached, however, Maureen wanted nothing more than to play only for her New Trier high school team with and against many of her life-long friends. She was honored to be elected Captain of the 2017-18 New Trier Varsity team and made the Illinois Girls All-State team that same year. Maureen served on the New Trier Social Services Board for all four years of high school. She was also an active member of her church youth group and participated in summer mission trips to Costa Rica and Cambodia. Maureen is currently enrolled at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA where she earned both University and Presidential Scholarships. She is studying religion, sociology, and psychology and hopes to become a social worker.

AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT Allison Salmon As the 2018 graduating senior having the highest weighted GPA, ALLISON SALMON was the recipient of the award for outstanding academic achievement. Alli started playing hockey in 5th grade while she was still doing figure skating, and soon decided that she liked hockey a lot better. She played for the Wilmette Braves until she joined New Trier Girls Hockey during her freshman year of high school. In addition to playing for NTGH, she also played for the Falcons her freshman year. Alli continued to play for NTGH through her senior year. She was selected to represent NTGH on the Chicago Metro Girls Jamboree team both her junior and senior years. She is a National Merit Scholarship winner. Alli is currently attending the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign where she is double majoring in Biology and Economics and is in the James Scholar Program. She is a member of the rowing team and is a violinist in the Illini Strings. She recently joined Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional sorority for female engineering and technical science students.

2018-19 Program // 15 NT Hockey Club Raises Over $13,000 to Support the Fight Against Pediatric Cancer Continuing their Homecoming tradition from years past, New Trier Hockey players managed to get themselves out into the local community in an effort to fight pediatric cancer. On Saturday, September 29th, players from all six teams – Green, Blue, White, Gray, Junior Varsity, and Girls - helped to raise both funds and awareness on behalf of the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation. Cash donations, collected both at various local merchants throughout the community, as well as online, total over $13,000 this year (and close to $40,000 to date). Proceeds of the campaign will directly benefit both children and those families suffering from cancer. The local businesses we’d like to thank are: Dunkin’ Donuts in Glencoe, The Grand Food Center in Glencoe, Starbucks in Glencoe, Winnetka, Northfield, and Wilmette, Panera Bread in Wilmette, Three Tarts in Northfield, Peet’s Coffee in Winnetka, Walker Brothers Original Pancake House in Wilmette, The French Market in Wilmette, and Once Upon a Bagel in Winnetka.

26 // 2018-19 Program IN MEMORIAMALEX PEGLER Every successful hockey team has their stars. The ‘point-per-game’ players with names circled on the opposing team’s scouting report. The individuals with spotlights in the Pioneer Press highlighting a State Championship hat-trick or a game winning Quad-Header goal. But what often gets looked over are the members of a club that hold the team together. The role player. The ‘glue-guy’. Alex Pegler was exactly that. Pegler was the epitome of a team player and was an impressive teammate in every sense of the word. Heading into the 2013 New Trier Green season, the age gap was an area of concern. The team consisted of 13 seniors, 1 junior, and 6 sophomores. Pegler was always there to make sure the sophomores were taken care of. He lived vicariously througvh the youth on the team; providing them rides, telling stories, and even pumping their tires to the female upperclassmen at school. As for the rest of us, Pegler’s leadership allowed the team to focus on doing our job. In the back of our minds, we knew that Pegs had us covered both on and off the ice. His energy was infectious. His passion spread throughout the room. Opposing teams were jealous of the affinity we had with each other and respected the bond we shared. Pegler was honest with himself and his teammates; criticizing us for our mistakes, but praising us for every success. Pegs didn’t care if he was on the ice in the final minutes of a big game. Pegler wore his heart on his sleeve and openly showed his feelings and emotions. Through him, we learned to hold each other accountable for our actions. He carried that attitude with him everywhere he went and it slowly became the attitude of our entire team. We ended that season as State Champions and I can confidently say we would not have gotten there without Pegler’s presence both on and off the ice. The New Trier Hockey Banquet marks the end of the season. Coaches give their speeches to each individual player and seniors get their formal send off. For Alex, it marked the end of his playing career. Pegler played for a number of hockey clubs ranging from the North Shore to Chicago over the course of his career, and I can’t imagine the number of teammates he positively affected over the years. He was an integral part of every team I was on with him. That love and passion didn’t stop when Pegler’s hockey career came to an end. He lived every day like that. There are lessons to be learned from Alex Pegler that extend beyond the locker room walls. If we could all express a fraction of the heart and passion Alex did in our own lives, we can make this world a better place – and that is something Alex lived for. Rest easy brother. Jesse Arnold Teammate

Too many good memories of pegs. He was a one of a kind guy, the kind of guy this world loved. An irreplaceable guy, a hockey guy and good guy. I love you and I miss you Pegler. I will never forget all the good times we spent together. #82 forever. RIP my brother.

28 // 2018-19 Program GOAL AND ASSIST FUND

All hockey families understand the joys and rewards of following and supporting their players’ hockey journeys.

Hockey families also understand that ice hockey is an expensive sport that places significant financial demands on every participant. Because of the high cost of participation, there are families in every hockey community, including ours, who struggle with paying the fees required for their son to play the sport he loves. One of the objectives of the New Trier Hockey Club is to ensure that no player is ever prevented from playing on one of our teams because of financial hardship. To meet this objective, the Club is fortunate to have the Goal and Assist Fund. The Goal and Assist Fund was established in 2011 through a generous donation by Paul Banks, a former New Trier Hockey player. Since its inception, the Goal and Assist Fund has helped bridge the gap for a number of families facing financial challenges, allowing their sons to begin or continue their New Trier hockey careers. Financial assistance provided through the Goal and Assist Fund is completely confidential and is tailored to each family’s unique situation and needs. The Goal and Assist Fund relies entirely on donations from our families and other members of our community to full fill its mission. A contribution to the Goal and Assist Fund will help the hockey community, our Club, and possibly one of your son’s teammates.

Please consider contributing to the Fund. If you would like to donate, please mail a check payable to NTHC at below address (please write “Goal & Assist Donation” on check): NEW TRIER HOCKEY CLUB Treasurer P.O. Box 176 Winnetka, IL. 60093

LENNY MUNSON: HEAD COACH

This is Lenny’s first year as the girls program Head Coach and he has a long and distinguished hockey career as a player and high school coach. Growing up in Glenview, Lenny played for the Glenview All Stars through Bantam, Loyola Acad- emy, and the Chicago Minor Hawk AAA team. He played Junior A hockey for the Chicago Cougars before going to the University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point to play Division II hockey. Lenny was an assistant coach for New Trier Green for fourteen seasons during which they enjoyed much success, including winning a number of state championships. Lenny also served as the goalie coach for the New Trier boys program. Two years ago, he was our assistant Varsity coach and last year he was the girls goalie coach. The program will benefit from Lenny’s familiarity with high school hockey, the New Trier programs, and our players. Lenny and his wife Amy live in Wilmette with their three children who all play hockey: Dillon at Miami University in Oxford Ohio, Taylor at Colby College, and Cole is a squirt goalie.

BILL NORBERG: ASSISTANT COACH

This will be Bill’s third season with New Trier Girls Hockey. Bill grew up in Chicago and be- gan playing hockey at twelve. In high school he transferred to Hopkins High in Minnesota to play with its teams. After high school, Bill played with the Canadian Pickering Panthers, the University of Wisconsin Badgers, and the Minnesota State University Mavericks in Mankato. After college Bill coached for the Winnetka Hockey Club for about four years when he retired to raise a family. A few years ago he returned to coaching hockey, working as a skills coach and goalie instructor, with the Wilmette Hockey Association. He has been employed for the last thirty years as a grammar school physical education teacher in Glenview. Bill lives in Niles with his wife. They have two grown daughters.

KATY SHADEK: ASSISTANT COACH

Katy is entering her second year coaching for New Trier Girls Hockey as an assistant coach. She grew up in Kenilworth where she played for Wilmette. She attended Lake Forest Academy where she played for the Varsity team as well as the Falcons and then Team Illinois. Katy spent her first two years of college in Minnesota where she played Division III Womens Ice Hockey for St. Olaf College. She is also coaching a mite travel team and a girls 10U travel team for the Wilmette Hockey Association. Katy is now attending Lake Forest College where she is pursuing a degree in Psychology.

2018-19 Program // 79 2 018 GLASA SENIORS ON SLED

80 // 2018-19 Program On April 8, 2017, seniors from both the boys and girls New Trier Hockey teams joined up with top athletes from GLASA sled hockey teams for an exhibition game at North Shore Ice Arena in Northbrook. This annual event is intended to raise money and awareness for this wonderful organization that provides opportunities to participate in sport for those with physical disabilities. The Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA) was founded in 1999 to provide health and wellness programming to a segment of the population that was underserved. New Trier Seniors and GLASA sled hockey players were combined into two teams for a three period sled hockey game. All players compete using sled hockey equipment that includes specialized ice sleds and hockey sticks with picks that enable the athletes to move around the ice using their hands. To raise funds for GLASA, the event featured a gift basket raffle, a chuck-a- puck contest, a silent auction, and food and beverage sales. GLASA strives to “Let No One Sit on the Sidelines” and operates under a mission to promote and support the optimal development and well-being of youth, adults, and military veterans who have visual or physical disabilities through inclusion recreation, fitness and competitive sports activities. To date, the New Trier Hockey Club has raised over $10,000 in donations to further support their mission.
