Canadiana.org Digital History Essay Prize

The 2015 Digital History Essay Prize, sponsored by .org with the collaboration of the Canadian Historical Association (CHA), will be awarded to students registered at a Canadian university who demonstrate the most compelling use of Canadiana.org digitized historical content in their scholarly research.

Overview Canadiana.org is non-profit coalition dedicated to providing broad online access to ’s documentary heritage. We work with libraries, archives and universities to preserve and disseminate Canada’s cultural records in digital format, making large sets of digital primary sources available to researchers: - Early Canadiana Online is a full-text collection of published documentary material, including monographs, government documents, and specialized or mass-market periodicals from the 16th to 20th centuries. Link: http://eco.canadiana.ca - The Heritage Project draws from the rich corpus of archival microfilm held by Library and Archives Canada, with a focus on fonds from the individuals and organizations that have shaped Canada’s history. Politics, arts and literature, labour, military history, aboriginal history and women’s history are particular areas of strength. Link: http://heritage.canadiana.ca

Details Prize entries should describe original research conducted with Canadiana.org content, and may draw from academic work submitted for credit in the current or previous academic years. Submissions may be written in essay format or as an annotated bibliography of select Canadiana.org sources that made a significant contribution to the student’s understanding of Canada’s past. Each account must be no longer than 1,000 words.

Prizes Up to four winning entries will receive prizes of $500 at the June 2015 CHA Annual Meeting at the University of Ottawa. In addition, all winners will become eligible for a 3-month paid summer student assignment at Canadiana.org from 1 June 2015 to 30 August 2015 in Ottawa.

Eligibility Contestants must be enrolled full-time at the undergraduate or graduate level in history or a related discipline; research showcased in the essay must be primarily concerned with the .

Conditions Winning entries will be published by Canadiana.org in various media. Submission of an essay implies consent of the author to allow Canadiana.org to edit and publish the entry.
