Please note this isn’t a complete listing of media articles but a snapshot only. 19 March, 2020: MORE THAN 2,000 ARE IN LOCKDOWN ON A CRUISE SHIP IN MELBOURNE AS THEY UNDERGO CORONAVIRUS SCREENINGS AT THE DOCK AFTER A 'NUMBER OF PEOPLE FELL ILL' More than 2,000 passengers and crew are temporarily locked down on a ship at a Melbourne dock while they undergo coronavirus screenings. The Golden Princess has docked at Station Pier at Port Melbourne, but disembarkation has been delayed until the ship receives clearance from Victorian health authorities. 'The advice that I have is that there are a number of passengers who are unwell,' Health Minister Jenny Mikakos told reporters. 'It's not believed that it is COVID-19 related, that is the medical advice that I have received.' State and cruise line officials previously said passengers would disembark at Honolulu Harbor. However, U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who is running for president, said during a telephone town hall Wednesday that the state Department of Transportation “made the difficult, but correct, decision to only allow the Maasdam and Norwegian Jewel cruise vessels … to come into port solely to take on fuel and resupply, in Honolulu Harbor.” The Maasdam, operated by Holland America Line, had its port call canceled in Hilo and is set to arrive Friday to Honolulu Harbor, state officials said. It has 842 guests and 542 crew members. Norwegian Cruise Line said one of its vessels that was turned away by Fiji and New Zealand is expected to arrive to Honolulu on Sunday. The Norwegian Jewel, with about 1,700 passengers, refueled in American Samoa but was not allowed to disembark at the Port of Pago Pago. Despite representations and last-ditch mercy pleas to the Thai Authorities, the Port of Phuket remained closed to cruise ships along with all other ports in Southeast Asia and the wider Indian sub-continent rendering an air repatriation not an option, the company said. Permission had however been granted by the local officials to take on provisions and bunkers off the coast of Phuket before the ships’ onward voyages. As cruise lines continue to work on getting their vessel back to port safely after suspending operations passengers on a ship operated by Cruise & Maritime Voyages took the quickest way to get back home option! According to the news in Australia, passengers who lived in Australia were given the option to remain onboard the Columbus cruise ship as it sails back to the UK or abandons ship on lifeboats to get back to Australia which is much closer. Apparently a total of 178 guests disembarked the CMV operated vessel on lifeboats as the ship was near the island of Phuket, Thailand. Another vessel named Vasco da Gama (IMO 8919245) was nearby was heading for Fremantle, Australia and thankfully the ship is operated by the same cruise line. Costa Luminosa, which has more than 1,400 people on board, is heading for the French Mediterranean port of Marseille. Dozens of crew members and passengers aboard the Costa Luminosa cruise ship are recorded as sick as the ship nears France in hopes of docking there Thursday, according to ship logs obtained by the Miami Herald. The cruise ship, owned by Miami-based Carnival Corporation, has left three people diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in two countries — Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands — since it departed Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale on Feb. 24. The cruise was originally supposed to end in Venice, Italy, on March 25 but is now scheduled to dock in Marseilles on Thursday after bypassing several ports. Passengers and crew members on board say they are nervous about what will happen when they arrive in France. President Emanuel Macron announced a 15-day lockdown of the country on Tuesday prohibiting all nonessential outings. At least 24 crew members on board the ship are classified as sick and are isolated, according to ship logs obtained by the Herald, and at least 50 passengers are classified as sick, or are roommates of passengers who are classified as sick. There are currently 1,427 passengers on board. • AIDA Cruises Will Resume Cruise Operations with Fall and Winter Voyages
AIDA Cruises Will Resume Cruise Operations with Fall and Winter Voyages Germany's leading cruise line will begin Canary Island cruises in November, Western Mediterranean and Orient cruises in mid-December and extends pause until November ROSTOCK, Germany, Aug. 28, 2020 -- AIDA Cruises, the leading cruise line in Germany and a part of Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), today announced that it will offer cruises this fall and winter that combine the fascination of a cruise trip with an unforgettable holiday experience to several popular destinations. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the conditions are currently not in place in Germany's neighbouring European countries, especially in the north with Norway and Denmark or the Baltic states. For many distant destinations outside of Europe, the Federal Republic of Germany has issued a travel warning or the respective countries have prohibited calls of cruise ships until 2021. As a result, the company has cancelled its previously announced cruises for September and has updated its fall and winter 2020-2021 program to provide its guests and sales partners additional time to plan and book vacations for a safe and enjoyable return to cruise holidays. As the first ship from the AIDA fleet to begin sailing, AIDAmar will set course on Nov. 1, 2020, for seven-day voyages to the Canary Islands, a popular destination with German vacationers. AIDAperla will follow on Nov. 7, 2020, and will take over the travel program originally planned for AIDAnova. AIDAmar's voyages will start and end in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. For voyages with AIDAperla, in addition to Las Palmas, AIDA Cruises will offer a second departure port with Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

  • A Qualitative Review of Cruise Service Quality: Case Studies from Asia
sustainability Article A Qualitative Review of Cruise Service Quality: Case Studies from Asia Yeohyun Yoon 1 and Kyoung Cheon Cha 2,* 1 School of Hotel and Tourism Management, Youngsan University, Busan 48015, Korea; [email protected] 2 Department of Business Administration, Dong-A University, Busan 49236, Korea * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 2 September 2020; Accepted: 29 September 2020; Published: 30 September 2020 Abstract: Although the cruise sector is considered an ‘unreplaceable’ form of tourism, with the cruise industry recording steady growth over the years, there is a lack of research and analysis on cruise ships themselves. Accordingly, this study sought to determine whether service quality differences among ships operating in the Asian market could suggest broader implications for the sustainability of the cruise industry. We chose the SERVQUAL framework for the analysis; we also employed the multiple case study method and topic synthesis to compare the service quality of three ships. Of the ships investigated—the Costa Victoria, Diamond Princess, and Superstar Virgo—the Diamond Princess had the highest service quality. Based on the results, we outlined suggestions for improving the quality of cruise services, including introducing the latest large ships and high-tech facilities, complying with the departure and arrival times of sailing schedules, improving the ratio of crew members per passenger, establishing a cruise personnel training system, and expanding membership program operations. Keywords: cruise; service quality; SERVQUAL; onboard attributes 1. Introduction Cruise tourism is one of the fastest growing tourism segments, and it has undergone significant transformation, especially in the last few decades [1,2].

The future is uncertain for Antarctica, with many possibilities – some more plausible, others more preferable. Indeed, the region and its governance regime may be reaching (or may have reached) a crossroads moment as a result of a series of challenges, including the changing Antarctic climate and environment, increasing human activity, shifting values among Antarctic states and a low-cost, somewhat benign governance regime (the Antarctic Treaty System). Within this context there are a number of interdependent drivers that are likely to influence Antarctica’s future over, say, 25 years: global environmental and socio-economic developments; Antarctic governance; Antarctic research, including national Antarctic programme operations; and Antarctic tourism. The research presented here involved a thorough examination of Antarctic literature on current Antarctic developments and challenges, and an assessment of global trends.

MSC Cruises’ health and safety protocol MSC Cruises’ new health and safety operating protocol has been designed to protect the health and safety of guests, crew as well as the local communities that the Company’s ships visit and has since been called a new standard for the overall industry. Its main pillars are: universal testing of all guests and crew prior to embarkation; “social bubble” for protected visits ashore at each destination; and an innovative onboard contact tracing mechanism. Moreover, the Seven Core Elements of a common health and safety protocol to support the resumption of the overall industry as put forward by CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, are inspired by the Nine Pillars on which MSC Cruises’ own protocol is based (see appendix for more details on MSC Cruises’ Nine Pillars).
