18 March, 2020: MSC CRUISE PASSENGERS POSED “MEDIUM RISK.” CDC CLEARED THEM TO DISEMBARK IN MIAMI ANYWAY Three days after thousands of passengers walked off the MSC Meraviglia ship in Miami without medical screenings despite a positive COVID-19 test from a previous cruiser, the agencies involved are still pointing fingers. A review of the incident indicates that gaps in the patchwork of authority overseeing Florida’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic may be to blame. Involved were federal and state health agencies, the cruise line and Miami-Dade County. The decision to allow 3,877 possibly exposed passengers to disperse across the country without even a temperature check was the responsibility of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Miami-Dade county seaport spokesperson Andria Muniz- Amador. 18 March, 2020: THE CRUISE INDUSTRY WILL STRUGGLE TO COPE WITH THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 The biggest health crisis in modern history will leave the future of the cruise industry in turmoil. However, the Covid-19 pandemic is unlike anything that many of us have ever experienced. Undoubtedly, this will lead to long-lasting repercussions for the cruise industry. It is estimated that the world cruise industry is worth approximately $150bn. The influence of the cruise industry is far-reaching. Many small island nations rely heavily on the positive multiplier effect major cruise liners create for the local and national economy. According to reports, the cruise industry contributes $2bn to the Caribbean each year. This results in a 5.9% contribution to some nations entire GDP, as this is the case with St Kitts and Nevis. A fall in cruise tourism could be disastrous for these countries and the many people that rely on tourism for their livelihood. 18 March, 2020: 17 CORONA DISTRESSED CRUISE SHIPS: SUMMARY A summary of cruise ships distressed or troubled by coronavirus paranoia and fears. The overwhelming majority of the ships and people on board are corona clean, they fell victims to inflated, not justified, fears, not to infamous virus. The list contains brief information on 17 troubled ships, it’s not full of course, there are more ships still cruising around, turned away by a number of countries, and not knowing where to dock. Thousands of people are trapped on board, unsure of their fate. It’s not a fight with coronavirus, it’s our shame and disgrace. I don’t know how dangerous coronavirus is, but I know, that the actions governments are taking to contain it, and all the fears hyped around it, are much more dangerous and ruinous, already. 18 March, 2020: NIGHTMARE AT SEA: CRUISE LINE FORCES ELDERLY TOURISTS TO GET OFF HALFWAY ACROSS THE GLOBE. Elderly passengers thought they were in for the cruise of their lives when they boarded Holland America’s at Port Everglades on Jan. 4 for a four-month global tour. That was before the novel coronavirus sparked a worldwide crisis that has thrown the travel industry into unprecedented upheaval. Just days after the world’s major cruise lines decided to temporarily suspend all new voyages and wind down ongoing ones, passengers aboard the Amsterdam learned they’ll be forced off the ship nearly two months early — not in Fort Lauderdale where they started, but on the other side of the globe in Fremantle, Australia. Once off the boat, they’ll be on their own to find ways to fly back home — and they’re not happy about it at all. The ship’s captain has asked the restive passengers to stop visiting the ship’s Guest Services desk with documentation and requests to remain on board and to stop visiting the Medical Department because medical staff feel “intimidated.” Read more… https://www.sun-sentinel.com/coronavirus/fl-bz-coronavirus-stranding-elderly-cruisers-in-australia- 20200318-shqkc2sbuneqbla5qklififcpq-story.html?utm_medium=notification&utm_source=onesignal

Food-service employees aboard the Diamond Princess hastened the spread of coronavirus on the stricken cruise ship, ultimately contributing to more than 700 cases, according to a US government study. 18 March, 2020: ‘WORSE THAN AN AIRPLANE’: HOW BEING CONFINED TO A CRUISE SHIP FUELED THE CORONAVIRUS SPREAD With thousands of people confined to a space with limited airflow, cruise ships are an ‘enabling environment’ for the spread of infectious diseases; The air circulation on a cruise ship is worse than on a plane, where the risk of transmission falls the farther you sit from an infected person. As coronavirus infections on the Diamond Princess in Japan swelled from 10 to more than 600 over a two-week period, experts warned that cruise ships may be one of the worst places to be during an outbreak. The air circulation on board might have played a major part in that, experts said. “The ship is an enabling environment for an illness such as Covid-19 to spread,” said Jean-Paul Rodrigue, professor of transport geography at Hofstra University in New York. “Air circulation there is worse than on an airplane.” [Japanese authorities] have realized that a cruise ship is pretty much the worst environment to be stuck in. Professor Jean-Paul Rodrigue “A cruise ship is an almost ideal environment to enhance the transmission of a virus, whether norovirus, coronavirus, or flu, from person to person,” said William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University. 17 March, 2020: STRUGGLING CRUISE SHIP CORPORATIONS SHOULD NOT GET AID FROM THE US GOVERNMENT They registered vessels in other countries to dodge taxes. They should look to those countries for a bailout. The situation for the cruise ship industry is so bad that some claim it may never fully recover from the present coronavirus crisis. The shares of cruise ship corporations have lost a stunning 80% of their value from "their all-time highs." The cruise season in places like the Pacific Northwest (Canada and Seattle) has been suspended. Indeed, the whole industry is pretty much suspended. This is not to mention the bad publicity that its numerous quarantined ships have generated from almost the beginning of the crisis. 17 March, 2020: WHEN ARE CRUISE LINES AROUND THE WORLD EXPECTED TO RESUME SERVICE? With ocean and river cruise lines temporarily suspending service around the world as a result of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, keeping track of the seemingly minute-by-minute changes to the cruise industry can be challenging. 17 March, 2020: SPRING CRUISES UNLIKELY TO HAPPEN… With ocean-going departures from American ports suspended until at least April 11, here’s what those interested in spring cruises can expect. Last week, the global cruise line industry all but ground to a halt, with the biggest companies suspending operations, at least in the United States, for 30 days. The decision, announced by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), came after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department urged Americans to avoid cruise ships, and the United States banned most travel from Europe. Thirty-two million passengers were expected to embark on ocean cruises in 2020, according to CLIA, though that number will certainly drop given the coronavirus pandemic. People over 60, an important cruise customer demographic, are especially at risk from the virus. When sailings begin again, travelers can expect increased passenger health and travel screenings and changes in cleaning and food service procedures; loosened trip cancellation and change policies may also stay in effect. Approximately 40 ships and 90,000 passengers were at sea at the time new sailings were suspended. Two of those ships, the Costa Luminosa and the Braemar, operated by the Fred Olsen Cruise line, are known to have had passengers or crew infected with the coronavirus and have had trouble finding ports that will accept them. Cuba finally allowed the second ship to dock.

Spring cruises to Europe are being canceled Mid-March through April is the time of year many United States-based ships typically head across the Atlantic to begin the European cruising season. That season looks unlikely to go forward. The C.D.C. has classified Europe as an area with “Widespread Sustained Transmission” of Covid-19 and has given it a Level 3 Warning, asking citizens to avoid nonessential travel. That is the same warning level applied to China, South Korea and Iran. The State Department has restricted all but United States citizens and legal permanent residents from returning from Europe. And countries have instituted lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus. Read more… https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/travel/update-spring- cruises-coronavirus.html

17 March, 2020: THE DIARY OF A CREW MEMBER AS THE CORONAVIRUS SPREAD ON THE SHIP On the night of March 3rd, before going to bed, a crew member aboard the Grand Princess—a cruise ship owned by Carnival, the largest cruise operator in the world—sat down to write in her diary. “What a rough day at sea!” she wrote. The weather hadn’t been good since the ship left the port of Hilo, in Hawaii, about a week earlier, bound for the Mexican port of Ensenada, carrying some thirty-five hundred people, nearly a third of them crew. Passengers, whom she’d watched line-dancing happily earlier in the day, were “wobbling about the ship,” and the loud banging of the waves and the movement of passengers made sleep unlikely. In the course of the next week, the crew member, whom I’ll call Margaret, took regular notes, as the days passed with increasing frustration and fear.
