August Sampler of the Month “Lea School Sampler” … aka as “Ellen Riggott’s Work 1843” from Samplers in My Attic

It’s a personal privilege for me to present this sampler reproduction as our Above, Ellen Riggott’s original sampler that she stitched August Sampler of the Month … which was first presented at our 2016 presumably at England’s Lea School in 1843. Summer School last August. Several dear friends in my life helped me along this journey. In August of 2015 Barb emailed me with this note: I was on eBay this morning and typed in a search for antique linen samplers. Saw a really nice little I stitched my model on Lakeside’s 52/60 V. “Mary Lea 1793” from the Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers

It is with great pleasure that I announce that this stunning sampler reproduction, “Mary Lea 1793,” from The Design Studios of Hands Across the Sea Samplers, will be our 2017 Attic Stitch-Along. Mary embroidered this exquisite sampler when she was only 11 years old ~ the model shown here was beautifully executed by Jacqueline Morris. The model, left, will be on display at The Attic throughout 2017. At 373 x 445, it’s a sizable project, very doable in a year’s time. The model is stitched on Lakeside’s Vintage Meadow Rue with Au Ver A Soie’s Soie d’Alger. The overdyed silk conversion is shown on the next page.

Mary Lea’s sampler is bordered with lilies and carnations, is filled with wonderful motifs, a plethora of birds as well as several butterflies and squirrels, a sweet cat and dog on either side of the manor house. I love the touches of blue throughout the sampler, the two apple trees and other trees, and the tulips and other flowers. The sampler is cross stitch over two, satin stitch, with the verse and other words cross stitch over one. The verse: Great God with Wonder and with Praise Not all the Books on Earth beside On all thy Works I look Such heavenly Wonders tell But still thy Wisdom Power and Grace Then let me love my Bible more Shine brightest in thy Book And take a fresh Delight Here would I learn how Christ had dyed By Day to read these Wonders o’er The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

The title of the design is The Swan's Bower and the original inspiration came from a motif on an 1813 English Sampler which is in Betsy’s collection. Another inspiration was a motif on a sampler that Betsy saw in a museum in Timaru, New Zealand last year.

The format for this etui comes from an antique needlebook that she bought at Beating Around the Bush in Australia last year. The original is burgundy colored velvet and is rather worn and ugly, but the construction of it fascinated her and she thought that she could take the format and run with it. The original was commercially made in England in the early 1900's

Betsy’s version is much larger and has pockets inside, made from the yellow silk Dupioni lining fabric. There are 3 "smalls" to tuck into the pocket - a scissor holder and fob and a floss holder. Also included is a swan beeswax thread waxer and a tiny enameled swan charm. The center of the inside of the book Betsy has been stitching for over 50 years, beginning with stamped has an attached needle/pin holder which has a thick piece of yellow wool Erica Wilson Crewel kits when she was a child. She has dabbled in inside to hold the needles/pins. almost any type of needlework imaginable, but her heart is in counted thread and Stumpwork. I love swans, and I can’t wait to do this piece! Betsy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Design from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She began designing and teaching needlework for her local EGA chapter in the mid 90's, Your kit will include all of the supplies needed to complete the design - went professional in 2001 and started her business, Willing Hands 32-count linen, silk Dupioni lining, interfacings, comic board, skirtex, Needlework Design, in 2003. “Maria Katarin’s Stitching Reticule” is a Mexican stitcher's purse. It is named for Betsy’s adopted daughter, Caitie, who is part Mexican. The various motifs and techniques used in this purse were inspired by an 1844 sampler from Pachuca, Mexico which is in her collection.

When folded closed, the reticule measures 4 x 8 inches. It is stitched on light mocha Belfast linen using Gloriana silk flosses and is lined in olive silk Dupioni. Inside there are 3 small pockets for holding your small needlework tools including two of the smalls in this design - a scissor fob and a thread winder. The reticule also includes a 5-inch stitched ruler.

Stitches include: Aztec, eyelet, diagonal pattern darning, pulled four-sided, long-arm cross, diagonal satin, Mexican klosters, satin, rice, upright cross, cross over one and cross over two.

. . . With Thy Needle & Thread

Lesson #2 in the SUMMER SCHOOLHOUSE Series, Lessons in Abecedarian, is here in the 4- part series from Brenda Gervais/With thy Needle & Thread. Brenda says this mystery series will consist of 4 lessons/4 separate charts, with a total of 6 projects. The chart ship dates for the next 2 lessons are projected for the 20th of each August & September. Charts retail for $12 each. The floss palette consists of 15 beautiful shades of hand- dyed fibers, 5 each from Weeks, Gentle Arts, and Classic Colorworks. (Cottons show, below left, at the bottom.). And as is the custom at The Attic, we are also offering a conversion to hand-dyed silks. The projects all coordinate and are designed to be placed together for a striking vignette of tiny handwork, each done over 1 on 28c fabric. The required fabric for all 4 lessons is a 9" x 55" piece. Brenda suggests a 28c Lugana ~ we also have a bit of 25c Mushroom Lugana if you’d prefer ~ and we’ve selected a 28c Lakeside linen, left, that we think goes splendidly with the silk overdyes, left top.

I’m stitching this series on 52/60 linen over 2 with Tudor silks and, coincidentally, its size is about the same as over 1 on 28c!

And we just learned that there will be a Needle Nanny for Lesson #3 ~ PLEASE let us This hand-dyed ric-rac trim from Lady Dot was Needle Nannies for know if you want that recommended by Brenda to finish our projects ~ $6 Lesson #2 ~ $20 for included so we don’t hold up the pair or $12 for one. your shipment to find out Y The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTICor N if you want it (1.888.942.8842) ~ it’s $12. www.atticneedlework.com

ALICE SMITH 1841 (SHEEP MAY SAFELY GRAZE) $30, 311 x 515 ~ The reproducionist says, 9-year-old Alice definitely had an eye for detail. She has lots of finely stitched-over-one details, including nuts in her tree, birds, sheep, and the dog. Most of the sampler is cross over 2. The verse: Mercy good Lord mercy I ask This is the total sum Mercy through Christ is all my Lord let thy mercy come Thy mercies ever shall endure . . . When this vain world shall be no …………….more……………….. And in the cartouche she personalizes it this way: Miss Alice Smith Aged Nine Yea rs July 30 1841 Isn't it an absolutely stunning sampler, with the most gorgeous border?! Lovely brick manor house as well, with curtained windows!

What an amazing job has been done in charting this sampler! The reproductions calls it “a close adaptation of the original antique sampler” “due to the irregularity of the stitches.” Whatever, it will surely provide many, many hours of pleasurable time with your needle.

CHRISTINA JUNOR 1834 $24, 244 x 240, a 19th century Scottish sampler, is shown reproduced on 32c hand-dyed linen with hand-dyed cotton. Its appeal for me is the minimum amount of white space.

M. REES 1842 $36, on 40c, ~16” x 22” ~ Here’s what the reproductionist says about this reproduction: This elaborate English sampler features a fearsome tiger beneath a tropical plantation house or gazebo, covered in lush trellises and vines. To the left of the house, a peacock and peahen roost in a tree with a rooster below them. Huge, exotic butterflies flutter around. This was probably stitched in either Africa or India (more likely the latter) by a British girl whose father was in the employ of an enterprise such as the East India Company.

CAMEL AND LION $30 (on 40c, ~12.5 x 111.5) Here’s what reproductionist Marsha Parker says about this needlework: This design was inspired by an early eighteenth century English needlework picture executed in : a magnificent example of the art of "needle painting" by the meticulous employment of silk threads on fine linen. This exotic scene illustrates foreign creatures new to the English people. Stitched over 2 threads on 40c linen, only cross stitch is used to execute the design. Love the camel! And it’s perfect for stitching it on a lovely hand- dyed linen and using the linen as its background.

SAXON ALPHABET SAMPLER Circa 1730-40, $26.50 (on 35c, ~9.5 x 19.5) Here’s what reproductions Marsha Parker says about this needlework: This partial German band sampler (the lower half was evidently removed at some point in its journey to the 21st century) was probably made in Saxony, in the area of Dresden, as the style resembles others that The Scarlet Letter have reproduced from that region (titled SDW, IRS, JCS and IES 1707, to name four). It has been arranged in two columns, the left side in finer stitches than the right. The sampler features a number of horizontal pattern bands very precisely stitched, as well as elaborate alphabets which were usually used as training exercises for embellishments to towels, cuffs, pillow cases, and other household textiles.

MARY HOOD 1768 $30 (on 35c, ~14 x 15.5) Here’s what reproductionist Marsha Parker says about this: This English sampler retained its vibrant original color when I acquired it, having been conserved and de-accessioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the ground suffered many small holes, the needlework itself was still in brilliant condition. It features bold- original!- primary colors in its four-sided floral border, verses, and scene with a lovely but asymmetrical brick house with dormer windows, flanked by trees. Stitches used are cross over one and two threads of linen and eyelet stitched over one and two threads of linen.
