Twenty Third Week In Ordinary Time September 8, 2019

From the Gusset You may have noticed in the Observer that the of Rockford is pushing Ministry Formation classes. These are classes designed for Adults, who wish to learn more about their Catholic Faith, because they wish to hand on that Faith to the next generation (as catechists) or help loved ones come into the Church through RCIA or perhaps they are lectors or Eucharistic ministers, who want to learn how to be better Catholics. The Diocese sprinkles these Formation classes throughout the Diocese on a pretty frequent basis. I would, of course, encourage your participation in this program, because the more you know about the Catholic Faith, the more in love with Christ you will become! That being said, I put in a plug for our own RCIA program, which will be offered on Tuesday nights at 6:30 pm starting in October. Rather than have to travel around the Diocese taking Ministry Formation classes, you can learn about our Faith right here in the Hall at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. I have long ago converted my RCIA program (initially designed for adults from a Protestant Faith to enter into communion with the ) to be catered to adult Catholics, who just want to learn more about their Faith. This year one of our texts will be a beautiful magazine produced by Catholic Digest that discusses the Vatican. Remember how in History class, we never seemed to get around to studying about World War II (because we spent so much time reviewing the American Revolution and the Civil War) and there was never any time to discuss the Vietnam War M for the school year had ended? Well this year in RCIA, we will start off talking about the Papacy and the State; as well as, the death and burial of St. Peter with the erection of his martyrium and the art of the Vatican Museum. Not only will you have a nice picture book for your coffee table (to catch the eye of visitors to your home), but you will learn more about the history of the as they helped to sculpt the beauty of the Catholic Church. Give RCIA (adult catechesis) a try this year, I think you will love it and you won’t have to travel very far! I told you our Missionary will be visiting us at all the Masses on September 21st and 22nd. Fr. Francis Mariadas will be talking to us about the Pallottine Fathers. Fr. Francis will be here the whole weekend, and he is very much looking forward to his time with us. He is ‘open’ to having dinner on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon with any generous parishioners. Any takers? Let Fr. Randy know. Yours on the Path Fr. Randy NO CHARGE FOR CCD THIS YEAR! LOUANN MALACH DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS ED It was in preparation for her Wedding Mass to Jason Malach in September that LouAnn entered the Catholic Church through the RCIA program at the Easter Vigil on April 4th, 2015 M and since then LouAnn has been on fire with the . Coming faithfully to Mass every Sunday, LouAnn has volunteered to be a Lector, and she and Jason are the proud parents of Mitchell Owen (baptized in November of 2016). It is with great admiration for this woman of Faith, that I introduce LouAnn to our Catholic Communities as our new Director of Religious Education. Our CCD program will be starting on Sunday, September 15th M signup sheets are in the back of Church, and this year there will be no charge for attending our CCD classes! To make LouAnn Malach’s (and each of our Catechist teacher’s) easier M please take your children to Mass every Sunday. If the Faith is not practiced by Mom and Dad M their children will not become good Catholics. Remember the definition of a “good Catholic” M one, who is so in love with Jesus Christ that they wish to receive the Sacraments of the Church every week of their life!

The floor of the Chapel at the North American College in became a slipping hazard on Sunday mornings. Not only would the priest celebrant perform the Sprinkling Rite, which took the place of the Penitential Rite during Easter Season, but two seminarians were assigned to hold fonts of Holy Water at the main entrance to the Chapel. Each priest and Mass participant would dip his hand into the font and (before blessing himself) would shake the excess water onto the Chapel floor. This was in honor of all the souls in purgatory! Holy Water was sprinkled to remind the dead that they will one day rise to glory, because they were baptized. If you would like Fr. Randy to sprinkle the graves of your beloved dead after MassNjust ask him to do so. The main reason that we hold a Mass in honor of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross at our cemetery in Maytown is to allow the dead to again see the Eucharist raised above their tombs. Just think, the last time they saw the Eucharist was at their Funeral Mass! Please bring a chair and a list of the members of your family that you wish to honor with the celebration of the Mass to the Maytown Cemetery on Saturday, September 14th at 11:00 am. The Wondrous Windows of Maytown St. Cornelius September 16th Patron of Earache and Epilepsy suffers Tradition holds that the first 32 were all martyred and so being the 21st Holy Father means that the Church wears red vestments to celebrate his Feast Day. However, other histories say that Pope Cornelius’s death was due to the hardship of being exiled from Rome from a cruel Emperor M though St. claims that Cornelius was beheaded and there is evidence of this M his first tomb is marked “Cornelius .” Now buried in one of the most ornate Churches in Rome, St. Maria in Trastevere M the persecution of the Christians at the time definitely shaped the priesthood of Pope Cornelius. The Emperor ordered the first universal persecution (most persecutions had been localized and sporadic) M where if citizen did not perform a religious sacrifice in the presence of a commissioner M they would face death. This is assuredly how (Cornelius’ predecessor) and Pope Lucius (Cornelius’ successor) died. Because the persecution was so severe a Pope was not elected upon the death of Fabian (the Church would be without a Holy Father for 14 months), but the Church continued to be run by a group of lead by . When Decius finally left Rome to fight the , the Roman elected a new Pontiff, but it was not Novatian (who fully expected election). A schism occurred over what to do with repentant Church members, who had practiced pagan sacrifices to protect themselves M should they be readmitted to the Catholic Church? Bishop Novatian thought ‘no.’ That was such a grievous sin that only God could forgive this sin. But Pope Cornelius thought that if a person went to confession and performed a for this sin of apostasy M that the Catholic Church did have the power to accept back into the Church those who had repented. A was held in Rome, Pope Cornelius’ position was upheld, and Novation was excommunicated. It is interesting that Pope Cornelius’ letters written during his exile in were written in colloquial , which suggests Cornelius did not come from a wealthy family. It is in one of these letters that Cornelius first mentions an office of “.” We can thus say that Pope St. Cornelius is partly responsible for the reason that Canon law now states that each diocese is to have an exorcist! The name Cornelius means “battle horn.” That is the reason our window in Maytown, pictures St. Cornelius holding the horn of a cow! Our Dream Team Saint of Maytown’s St. Patrick’s Church is known as the of those who suffer from earaches and epilepsy, as well as being the patron of cattle and domestic animals.
