On October 22nd, citizens of Snow Lake communed with others Forthcoming council a mixture of new and old in Manitoba on their quadrennial trek to the municipal polls. How- ever, while our neighbours in Flin Flon, Thompson, and The Pas all elected a new Mayor, we in Snow Lake acclaimed one. No one other than long-time resident and businessperson Kim Stephen was willing to take on the demanding duties of a community in rebuild mode; she stepped up to the plate and appears ready for the task the role of Mayor brings to bear. Notwithstanding the acclamation of the Mayor, residents did vote for the six councilor positions spanning the 2014 -2018 term. Of the four incumbents in the race, two were returned to office; Brenda Forsyth- Flamand (315 votes) and Aldon Kowalchuck (257 votes) were suc- cessful; while Angela Enright (140 votes) and Dave Mayer (89 votes) were not. At that time, young Donais gave an overview of this impressive piece, which is fabricated from wood. Back then I wrote a story on the piece noting that it had a recirculation system that pumped Stabback ~ Cruz water down a sluice into a bed of gravel at the exhibit’s base. After paying a minimal fee, patrons are given a gold pan and shown how to gather gravel in the pan and swirl water until the lighter sand and gravel is washed away and all that is left is gold. The shiny stuff shows up in every pan of gravel you pick up and although even a blind geologist would tell you it isn’t really gold, everyone who tries it gets the idea, and it is an enjoyable experience. “Kids just love it,” Donais said at the time. “They are all just amazed when the gold shows up in their pans.” ~ file photo of Brett Donais panning gold by Marc Jackson

3) Rockhound Exhibit The Rockhound Exhibit is fairly straightforward. A child becomes an official ‘Rock- hound’ by searching through the museum’s massive display of rocks looking for four strategically placed, but only numbered samples of Galina, Chalcopyrite, Pyrite, and Sphalerite. Once found and identified, the ‘hound’ must match the sample up with the metal derived from it and by signing their submission they gain an official ‘Rock- hound’ certificate. Without prospecting (or Rockhounding) it would be impossible to find a potential mine property and nothing mining related could be done on a piece of property until a claim is staked. Both this activity and the Claim Staking Exhibit give the child an excellent feel for how a mine is found. ~ file photo of Rock Doctors Clair Pilgrim and Bill Salahub schooling some young rockhounds by Marc Jackson. ...RANKIN from page 1 started into the beginning notes of ‘Followed Her Around’ people were swaying in their seats, clapping their hands, and singing along. It was WATERPROOF fairly obvious that many at the show were quite familiar with Rankin’s vast catalogue of music and GUARANTEED WINDPROOF there were many attending on this night who shared HOURS OF FUN IN THE SNOW WITHOUT BEING COLD OR GETTING WET ! his maritime roots. As the music got louder and faster, the old Lawrie Marsh Hall never sounded better; Rankin’s man on the mixer this night earned his wage and more. The sound was crisp and clear and pleasing to the ear. When the performer and his accompanist finally came to the end of their presentation, the crowd showed their collective gratitude and clapped, whistled, and whooped till he offered up an encore. He’d obviously contemplated this final three song set, beginning with a soulful and relevant Remembrance Day tune, ‘Banks of Sicily’ by John Allan Cameron, followed it up with one of his Christmas songs, ‘Tinsel Town’; then closed with ‘Whiskey when the Sun Goes Down’. After another rousing round of applause, the two gents left the stage; then came down into the main hall to talk with audience members and sign CD’s. From start to finish the show ran two hours and ten… which is just about as long as anyone cares to sit in the chronically uncomfortable chairs of the Lawrie Marsh Hall. Nevertheless, a great show in a more than suitable venue. It should also be mentioned that the members of the Aurora Borealis Arts Council once again outdid themselves. The shows this fine group brings to our little town are always top notch and this one was certainly indicative of that. They deserved some of the applause rendered on this night as well. Bravo. MJ

However, what is mundane and frivolous to some, is obscure and intriguing to others. So it is that we go about featuring articles and items in this column that come from the trade of mining. They also all hold the distinction of being artifacts featured or situated in our own Snow Lake Mining Museum. This edition, we showcase three relics from mines and mining in the area. They are: 1) an underground truck, 2) a mill hole, 3) a slusher blade.

1) 20-ton Dux Underground Truck - Ghost Lake, which operated from 1972 – 1988, held the distinction of being home to the first underground truck used in area mines, a 20-ton Dux that featured the capacity to articulate its body as well as dump. This particular truck currently sits on the back east side of the Mining Museum property. At one time all local mines were track based operations, with rail laid throughout and trammer engines and muck cars were used to move ore. Through an industry wide move to modify mining methods, new, more powerful machines were introduced and underground trucks were part of this retrofit. A simple explanation of how they work is when blasted ore is loaded at the muckpile by Scoop Tram or LHD (Load Haul Dump), the underground truck provides transport from there to surface (in a decline), or to mine collection points to be skipped to surface (via a shaft). The DUX Company is still in business and they still sell the DT-Series of underground dump trucks. These trucks are available with standard dump box, ranging in capacity from 6 to 50 metric tonnes (7 to 55 short tons). They also manufacture Teledump Trucks, Cement Remix Trucks, Scissor Lifts and Scalers. Of note, Atlas Copco manufactures the world’s largest articulated underground mining truck, the Minetruck MT85. It has high capacity, but fits in a small envelope. It is 3.4 m wide and 3.5 m high, easily fitting into 6.0 x 6.0 m drifts. Despite its length (14.0 m), its turning radius is 44 degrees, which results from an electro-hydraulic steering of the rear axle, which gives maximum maneuverability.

2) The Mill Hole - Mining Museum Board Chairman Paul Hawman explained how the metal mill hole was incorporated. “When in the stope, you try to make gravity work for you as best you can,” he said. “You would go in and take an undercut, which would be 8' high and as wide as the ore is and as long as you can manage. Once you get that done and all the ore out and down the raise. So you've driven your * Fun Bingo 1st and 3rd muck raise up into the stope, now you have a place to muck to, sometimes Thurs. of the month at 7:00 p.m. two of them if it is a long stope, as well as a manway entrance - in and out. Then your air and water comes from the top. After that undercut is done, you are going to move up. So you drill your up holes and bring the next breast down; again, making gravity work, because everything goes down. *General Meeting, 3rd Well, you've lost your mill hole or your raise that gets the muck down to the chute on the next level, so what they did was they built this (metal mill hole) up over the Saturdays of the month at muck raise as it came up in the sill. So, when the first eight feet is out, you take * Meat Draw, every the next one, down, so now you're 16 ft. high. Before you do anything more, you 11:00 a.m. clean it all out and build a mill hole by adding pieces until it is up to where the Saturday at 4:00 p.m. sill will be, then you'd take the next one. You'd carry those with you all the way through and sometimes these (mill holes) were 200 + feet long and they snaked and moved around more than you'd ever believe. I can remember the guys hauling *Chase the Ace, every these in stopes. They would put them on a flatcar and take them in from the shaft to the manway, then they'd get them off and manhandle them over to the top of the Saturday during raise and hook them on to a tugger, then down the raise into the stope, then they'd manhandle them from there over to where the mill hole was. The term mill hole the Meat Draw! comes from anything fit to go to the mill.”

3) The Slusher Blade - The Slusher was what would be used to move muck * Whist, every Friday to the mill hole. “It was hooked to the slusher drum with two cables, one drum overwound and the other underwound, at 7:30 p.m. so one would pull and the other let out,” explained Hawman. “One cable came out to a block on the backwall and down to the back of the slusherblade. That was how you moved it back. Then the other drum Phone (204)358-2308 hooks to the toe of the slusher and that's how you pulled it ahead, so really all it did for more details! was go back and forth.” MJ Page 11 THE Underground PRESS November 20, 2014 years.
