Scholarship recipient Nadine Farid ’95 lauds the generosity and continuing impact of scholarship donor Robert V. Copeland ’37 by Nadine Farid ’95 Climenko/Thayer Lecturer on Law Harvard University Law School DePauw graduates of generations past are renowned for their generos- ity. However, not all DePauw alumni have had the opportunity to not only benefi t from an alum’s thoughtful gift to the school but also make the close acquaintance of that alumnus or alumna. Those of us who were fortunate enough to receive the Copeland Scholarship to DePauw, established by Robert V. “Bob” Copeland ’37, had that rare opportunity. Mr. Copeland, who passed away on Aug. 12, 2004, came to DePauw in the footsteps of his two older brothers. He was, by all accounts, the quintessential DePauw student – intelligent, friendly, heavily involved in student life and dedicated to DePauw sports, playing basketball and football, and lettering twice. His fondness for the school and his experi- ence there is evident in his early career as an educator as well as in his exemplary generosity to the school. An Indiana boy who attended the former Valley Mills High (now part of Decatur Central High School) near where he was raised in India- napolis, Mr. Copeland moved to my hometown, Lebanon, Ind., prior to his retirement from Eli Lilly and Company in the 1970s. He and his wife, Josephine, lost their son Ronald in childhood. The Copeland Scholar- ship, now in the names of Robert and Josephine S. Copeland in memory of their son, was established to provide recipients with the opportunity Josephine and Robert V. -

Driven by the rivalry between modern warfare and militia tradition, the role as well as the ideology of the militia institution fitfully progressed beyond its seventeenth century origins. Ohio’s militia, the third largest in the country at the time, strove to modernize while preserving its relevance. Like many states in the early republic, Ohio’s militia started out as a sporadic group of reluctant citizens with little military competency. The War of the Rebellion exposed the serious flaws in the militia system, but also demonstrated why armed citizen-soldiers were necessary to the defense of the state. After the war ended, the militia struggled, but developed into a capable military organization through state-imposed reform. -

x Frederick H. Hackeman CAMP 85 April 2021 Commander’s Ramblings Brothers, Well, as you can see this is LATE in getting out. I can only say that events conspired against me in keeping on schedule. I can only hope that everyone is keeping safe and that we’ve all been able to get vaccinated. If we have then that makes it somewhat easier for us to have an in-person meeting in May. Chuck called and said that he would be checking on a venue to see if we might be able to meet. War So, let’s get down to it. June has the Flag Day parade and I’ll be registering us for that event. So, we need to check on our members to see if we can all participate. Ray should be able to have the trailer for some of us to ride on and do the waving to whatever crowd is on hand. Accordingly, some of our members could once again walk in front and fire their muskets to thrill the crowds and perhaps have one carry our camp flag. As I’ve said previously, those riding on the trailer would be sitting and waving and they don’t need to be dressed in CW garb. Those of us with the outfits should consider wearing them to help the group look spiffy and attract attention. Journal of Arts & Humanities Constructing an ‘Outlandish’ Narrative of Self: The Role of Music in Muslim Experience Reem M Hilal1 ABSTRACT This paper explores the way in which Muslims, particularly those in the Diaspora, use music as an alternative medium to negotiate a narrative of self that reflects their performance of their faith and the issues that concern them. The focus will be on the music of the Danish based music group Outlandish. Specifically, music has become an important space to dismantle and reformulate discussions on identity and offers insight into the way language, religion, and resistance are deployed in a medium with increasing currency. Outlandish has garnered an international audience; through mediums such as YouTube, their music resonates with Muslims and other minority groups in the diaspora faced with similar issues of identification. This paper addresses the questions: how is music employed to construct narratives of self that challenge boundaries? How does music engage the issue of representation for those who face exclusion? How can their work be read in the contemporary setting where globalization has brought different cultural worldviews into contact, at times producing dialogue and constructive exchange and at other times leading to discernible violence, engendering a more pronounced sense of alienation and exclusion? Through their music, Outlandish expresses the ways in which what differentiates between people binds them through a process of recognition, to borrow from Judith Butler. Focusing on Outlandish’s music, I examine the role of music in the negotiation and construction of narratives of self by contemporary Muslims that counter those that have been constructed for and against them. -

Patriotic Instruction Sultana Anniversary
Ben Harrison Camp No. 356 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – Department of Indiana Sultana Disaster – April 27, 2018 Sultana was a Mississippi River side-wheel steamboat. On April 27, 1865, the boat exploded in the worst maritime disaster in United States history. She was designed with a capacity of only 376 passengers, but she was carrying 2,155 when three of the boat's four boilers exploded and she burned to the waterline and sank near Memphis, Tennessee, killing 1,192 passengers. This disaster was overshadowed in the press by other events, most particularly the killing on the previous day of President Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth. The wooden steamboat was constructed in 1863 by the John Litherbury Boatyard in Cincinnati, intended for the lower Mississippi cotton trade. The steamer registered 1,719 tons and normally carried a crew of 85. For two years, she ran a regular route between St. Louis and New Orleans, frequently commissioned to carry troops. Near 2:00 A.M. on April 27, 1865, when Sultana was just seven miles north of Memphis, her boilers suddenly exploded. First one boiler exploded, followed a split second later by two more. The cause of the explosion was too much pressure and low water in the boilers. There was reason to believe allowable working steam pressure was exceeded in an attempt to overcome the spring river current. The enormous explosion of steam came from the top, rear of the boilers and went upward at a 45-degree angle, tearing through the crowded decks above, and completely demolishing the pilothouse. -
