NEW YORK,NEW YORK edited by Valerie Block

Culture’s hefty bottom line INCOLN CENTER treats New Yorkers to a Lcultural bonanza each year, from the Mostly Mozart festival to the Nutcracker. It also generates $3.4 billion a year of economic activity for the metropolitan area, according to a report to be released by the performing arts center this week. The first economic impact study undertaken by the institution in more than five years includes data on such recent ventures as Fashion Week, the David Rubenstein Atrium buck ennis and Lincoln Restaurant. The newcomers are on track to have a total impact of $400 million annually. The center’s 5 million annual visitors generate $660 million in economic activity each year, according to the report. Its 12 resident organizations, including the New York City Opera and the Juilliard School, employ 9,000 people and enroll more than 2,000 students annually. Even the complex’s $1.2 billion redesign, which is 90% completed, has provided a bang for the buck. Started four years ago, the reconstruction has contributed $240 million a year to the New York economy and created the equivalent of 1,000 full-time jobs, for a total of about $70 million in wages. WHAT’S HOLDING CITY BACK IN NEXT TECH WAVE

SO IS THIS BUBBLING, so-called ecosystem for technology development in New York big enough and robust enough to be self-sustaining? Can it give birth to a Google or a Twitter? To answer those questions, veteran New York investors first dismiss the oft-repeated accusation that the city is an also-ran in technology because venture capitalists and angels are too eager to take their money and run, that they lack the staying power to build large, world- changing companies. “I don’t see any company in New York that has really sold early,” says Rick Heitzman, a managing director at FirstMark Capital. “The guys at Foursquare and SecondMarket opted not to sell. There’s a desire to go all the way.” But investors do worry that the city, long dominated by Fortune 500 stalwarts, lacks an aggressive, risk- taking culture. They also decry the failure of the city’s universities to get involved in birthing new companies, something that has been common on the West Coast and in Boston, where Stanford University and MIT have been drivers in commercializing technology. “[At] Stanford and MIT, they do great fundamental scientific research, but students and faculty are also
