The BMW Club Journal • August 2013 25 A Charity Ride-Out With A Difference Words by Piers Kurrein, photos by Helen Johnson

Here are some rather charming pictures of David Andrews of Harrogate with his 1959 BMW R60 and Steib 501 sidecar outfit. The pictures were taken at the Pannal Primary School summer fair where I understand his grandchildren attend and which took place to raise funds for the school. David was there to give the children a ride round the field in the chair for a donation of £1 to the school funds. There seems to have been a constant queue of excited kids waiting for their two lap ride which included the banking at the top end. Imagine how delighted they must have been, having only travelled previously strapped in the back of an ultra-smooth and quiet modern motor car to suddenly have to hang on to the grab rail and bounce their way along listening all the time to the roar of the bike’s engine right next to them. Many kids just jumped out at the end of their ride only to join the end of the queue for another go. Parents were not immune to this infectious enthusiasm either, joining the littler ones in the outfit. All in all this continued for almost the whole three hours of the Fair! Well done David. You did a sterling job for a great cause and, who knows, maybe some of the children may be inspired to join the motorcycle fraternity when they come of age. Maybe even have a preference for our BMW brand! 26 The BMW Club Journal • August 2013 I Blame My Daughter Bruce Preston reminisces Back in 1957 the possibility of owning a he put himself forward for the post of Sports BMW didn’t enter my mind.
