Note that it does not say "some men" or "semi-un- alienable"; the statement is unqualified. The five great Americans who drew up this document were explicit and definite in their contention that all men are entitled to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Believing this, Americans have a social conscience. In trying to ensure that all men enjoy "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" we have shared our blessings with the underprivileged to an unprecedented degree. But when we share with others the convictions set forth in our Declaration of Independence, we share the very essence of our greatness. Rather than make these accusations of inequality we, as American Catholics, should first look at the origin and purpose of both public and parochial schools. Education in our nation and State had its origin with Let's NOT Seek the church. Each particular denomination established its own schools supported by its members. Several religious denominations almost in a body placed Catholic Schools themselves in opposition to the new law, and had it re- pealed in 1826 without its having been put into effect. These religious groups, predominantly Protestant, were not opposed to education. They had proved their inter- est in it by establishing their own schools.
