RECYCLING CONTINUED: What Do Those Numbers Mean? Each year, the Environmental Commission chooses a focus topic to educate residents on environmental issues. In 2021 the commission is focusing on recycling. This article will explain what the “chasing arrows” symbol means on the plastics we use and what they mean for us as consumers. We have all seen them, the “chasing arrows” symbol with a number inside the triangle. That means the plastic container we just got done using can be placed in our curbside recycling container, right? Unfortunately, the answer is not a simple ‘yes;’ it is a ‘maybe,’ or a ‘no,’ or a ‘it depends where you live.’ Recycling, and the numbers on our plastics, are confusing to many people. We will try to explain it so you as a consumer can make smart decisions when buying and recycling plastic products. The numbers we see on the plastics are simply stating the type of resin that is used to create the plastics, they were never truly intended to designate a product as recyclable or not. Let us briefly describe the codes you will see on your plastics:

PET or PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) LDPE (low density polyethylene) is the most common plastic for single use bottled beverages, it is is a flexible plastic with many applications. Historically, it has not been inexpensive, lightweight, and relatively easy to recycle. However, its accepted through most American recycling programs, but more and more PETE recycling rates remain relatively low. It is common in soda bottles, LDPE collectors are starting to accept it. It can be found in squeezable bottles, water bottles, ketchup, salad dressing, and vegetable oil containers. bread bags, and tote bags. That means anything made with LDPE may need to be thrown in the trash. Plastic bags with LDPE may be able to be collected by retail stores for recycling.

HDPE (high density polyethylene) PP (polypropylene) is a versatile plastic with many uses and is readily recyclable into has a high melting point, so it is often chosen for containers that will hold many types of goods. It can be found in milk jugs, juice bottles, hot liquid. It is gradually becoming more accepted by recyclers. It can be HDPE detergent, household cleaner, and shampoo bottles. HDPE can often be PP found in some yogurt containers, syrup and medicine bottles, and straws. picked up through most curbside recycling programs. Plastic grocery PP can be recycled through some curbside programs, just don't forget to bags and plastic wrap can't be recycled curbside, but some stores will make sure there's no food left inside. It is best to leave the caps on bottles collect and recycle them. for recycling. Loose caps will fall through sorting machines and jam or slow down the recycling process.

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and V (vinyl) PS (polystyrene) is tough and weathers well, so it is commonly used for things like can be made into rigid or foam products. Most carriers will not accept it. It piping and siding. PVC is also cheap, so it is found in plenty of products can be found in disposable plates and cups, meat trays, egg cartons, and V and packaging. It can be found in shampoo, siding, windows, and PS carry-out containers. Not many curbside recycling programs accept PS piping. PVC and V can rarely be recycled, but it is accepted by some in the form of rigid plastics. Since foam products tend to break apart into plastic lumber makers. If you need to dispose of either material, ask smaller pieces, you should place them in a bag, squeeze out the air, and tie your local waste management to see if you should put it in the trash it up before putting it in the trash to prevent pellets from dispersing. or drop it off at a collection center.

OTHER A wide variety of plastic resins that do not fit into the previous categories are lumped into this one. Polycarbonate is number seven plastic. It can be found in OTHER three-and five-gallon water bottles, sunglasses, signs and displays, certain food containers, and nylon. These other plastics are traditionally not recycled, so don't expect your local provider to accept them. The best option is to consult your haulers website for specific instructions.

As mentioned above, all this information can be quite confusing. When sorting your recyclables at home, reference your recycling carrier’s website or information on your curbside recycling bin. They will have the items they will and will not accept. When shop- ping, you can also choose to purchase items that are easily recyclable to make your recycling efforts easier. Consumers also have the option to simply refuse to purchase or accept plastics that are not necessary or that are not recyclable. As a rule of thumb, consumers should recycle plastic materials coded 1, 2 & 5 that are larger than your fist. Small items may clog the recycling equipment. Material code 4, commercial plastic bags (Target, Cub, etc.), should be returned to the retail store where you got it. All other plastic coded numbers should go to the trash. Remember, the “chasing arrows” symbols listed above do not indicate for certain that a plastic is recyclable. The use of plastics will continue to increase because they are cheap and convenient. At our current pace, plastic production is expected to triple by the year 2050, and in the last sixty-eight years less than 10% of all plastics have been recycled. This trend is worrisome; when plastics cannot be recycled or are disposed of improperly, they end up in our landfills, lakes, streams, and oceans. Plastics will continue to be a major problem to landfills, the recycling industry, and the environment unless we find a better way to refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle our plastics. The Chanhassen Environmental Commission is providing this information in pursuit of its mission to address, advocate for, and educate on various environmental issues affecting the city. Look for our column in future Connections as we continue to educate on the important issue of recycling.
