Connecting Club and Community Connecting Club and Community “Safeguarding the future of Peterborough United by ensuring all fans have a voice” Newsletter Issue 46 September 2017 Chris Turner Statue Unveiling The bronze statue of former Posh player, skipper, team manager, commercial manager, chief executive, chairman and owner Chris Turner was unveiled on Friday Sept 1st 2017 The 9ft (2.75m) statue by Suffolk based sculptor Sean Hedges Quinn was funded by fans, local businesses and the club who raised over £103k for the statue in just 18 months. The unveiling event, which was open to the public, started at 1.00pm with the statue being unveiled by Chris's wife Lynne at 3.00pm in front of hundreds of fans and onlookers. Local dignitaries including the Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough John and Judy Fox, Gillian Beasley Chief Executive of the City Council and Councillor John Holdich, Leader of the City Council were present. pictured : Adi Mowles and ex player Bobby Barnes pay tribute to the legend Chris Turner. A number of ex-Posh players were at the event including Jack Carmichael, John Cozens, Tommy Robson and David Gregory who played alongside Chris in the 1970's, Dave Robinson, Lee Howarth, Mick Halsall, Bobby Barnes and Marcus Ebdon who played for Chris in the 1990's Prior to the unveiling, Adi Mowles, Chair of the Chris Turner Statue Committee, Bobby Barnes, PFA Deputy Chief Executive and the statue sculptor, Sean Hedges Quinn all made speeches paying tribute to Chris and praising the fans who raised so much money for the statue in such a short space of time. The statue, which is an incredible honour and tribute to the great man, now stands proudly outside the North Stand at the ABAX Stadium, London Road and weighs about 57st (360kg). Chris's wife Lynne provided information and pictures of Chris to help the sculptor produce the statue which clearly captures the look and appearance of the Posh legend. Every time you now go the ABAX you can look at the great man whose greatest triumph as manager was to steered Posh to the second pictured : The Statue Fund Raising Committee tier of English football for the first time in the that worked so hard for the benefit of us all. club’s history with a 2-1 Division Three play- off final win over Stockport at Wembley. As a player, Chris played more than 350 games for the club scoring 43 goals. He started as an apprentice for the Posh in 1968 and signed professionally the following year making his debut on 27th December 1969 in a 2-2 draw away at Notts County. Chris was appointed manager of the Posh in January 1991. After a lean period for the club, Chris's team, which included players such as Bobby Barnes, Tony Adcock, Ken Charlery and Fred Barber, brought the good times back to London Road big style leading the team to successive promotions in the 1990/91 and 1991/92 seasons. In December 1992 Chris handed the manager's job to Lil Fuccillo, as he led a consortium to buy the club from John Devaney, in a £1 million deal. During his time at the Posh Chris also held the posts of commercial manager, chief executive and chairman. Sadly, Chris died aged 64 after a long battle with dementia on the 27th April 2015. That day, a part of Posh also died. Well done the C.T. Statue Fund Committee. As the new season starts, my expectations for the Posh are the same as they have been for the last 51 seasons (that's every year that I've supported the Posh!) and I'm sure are very similar to every other football fan. Yes I'm hoping my team get promoted and win the FA Cup final at Wembley! In reality only 3 clubs in League 1 will get promoted and the best hopes of a cup win is in the Checkatrade Trophy, but that doesn't stop me from dreaming! But enough of my hopes and dreams for the Posh this season, what have the trust been up to during the close season? Well, we have attended PUFC Supporters Group Liaison meetings raising issues fans have come to us with, launched a new section 'Match Reports' on our on-line museum as well as updating the Team Photo's, Books and added new footage on our Film Footage sections. We have also continued to build up funds mainly through our Gold Bond scheme to create a pot of money to help the football club in the longer term in the event of a crisis. Despite all this, we still have a number of objectives and activities that we want to start on this season which hopefully we will achieve in the coming months / years. To this end, the trust will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Monday 6th November 2017 from 7.30pm in the Sponsors Lounge, at the ABAX Stadium where I will be setting out our vision going forward. It would be great to see as many Posh fans as possible at the event. The formal business proceedings take 20/30 minutes then there is the opportunity for an informal Q + A with Trust Board members where you can quiz us on my vision, find out more about what the Trust does and how you can get involved. Our patron Tommy Robson will be at the AGM and is going to bring along a couple of other ex-Posh players to share some stories of their time at the Posh. Put Mon 6 November 2017, Posh Trust AGM 7-30pm in your diary now! Don't forget you can keep up to date with what else is going on at the P.S.T. follow us on Twitter @PoshTrust and on our Facebook account @theposhtrust. We also update our website http://www.theposhtrust.co.uk/ on a regular basis or if you sit in the BGL stand, come and meet us at our stall. Up the Posh! Annual General Meeting of ‘The Posh Supporters’ Trust’ held in The Sponsors Lounge, at the ABAX Stadium. on Monday 6th November 2017, commencing 7-30pm Under the rules, Directors, John Henson and Ken Storey must resign from office at this year’s AGM, though they are eligible for re-election. There are several positions on the Board available, and new members are urgently needed to bring fresh ideas and skills to the board. In particular, we would like to see younger members, male and female joining the board to ensure that the ambitions and views of all generations and genders are considered at all times. To stand as a Board member you must be a fully paid up member of the Posh Supporters Trust. To obtain a nomination form, or if you would like to know out more about being a board member of the Trust, email us [email protected] and we can either meet or phone you for an informal chat. Nomination Forms must be completed and returned by 01 October 2017. Should there be more candidates than the number of seats available; the Secretary will arrange an election and postal ballot papers will then be issued to all members by 9 October 2017 in order that voting can take place prior to the AGM. Voting will be by post or in person at the meeting. Following the AGM and refreshments, we are planning to hold an interactive ‘Q and A’ session with some retired legends of the club, followed by our traditional Posh Quiz hosted by Mick Robinson. All Posh fans are welcome to join us, and refreshments will be provided. • Peterborough United by Ensuring All Fans Have a Voice
Newsletter Issue 49 March 2019 Connecting Club and Community Safeguarding the future of Peterborough United by ensuring all fans have a voice Chair's Notes It’s been a very active time at Posh during the 6 months since our last newsletter publication. In October the Supporters Trust was proud to assist Peter Lane with the official launch of the “Posh Hall of Fame” at the ABAX Stadium. Many of the inductees, or family representatives were in attendance, for an evening of nostalgic memories and stories to honour the 32 members. In excess of £1,200 was raised on the night and donated to Jada-Lea Quow, the daughter of one of the legends we honoured, Trevor Quow. The Trust also held our 16th Annual General Meeting on 22nd November. Ray Cole, John Lawrence and Frank Harburn stepped down from the board at the AGM and we thank them for their excellent contribution to the Trust in recent years. On the pitch with no less than 18 new enthusiastic players seeking to impress and make the first team, Posh were off to a flying start to the season. By the end of September, Posh played 10 league games scoring 26 goals, with 7 wins and 2 draws. Since then, whilst Posh have maintained a play-off position, too many draws, conceding goals and inconsistent performances led to a change of management at the end of January. The Trust welcome Darren Ferguson and Gavin Strachan back to the club and wish Steve Evans and Paul Raynor all the best for the future.
