4. Actions Improving outcomes for children and young people in Bessbrook It had been agreed to pursue a Summer Scheme for u12s within the Bessbrook area as currently there are no activities in place for this age group. The summer scheme in the Bessbrook area would cover physical activity and healthy eating.

Taucher outlined the Council’s Financial Assistance policy as an option to apply for funding to cover the cost of th the summer scheme. The closing date for the funding is 16 February 2018. It was discussed the possibility of a few groups coming together and applying for funding to cover different elements of the summer scheme. This was similar to the Young Men’s Mental Health conference in in which within the Newry Locality Group a number of organisations applied to fund different parts of the Mental 2 Health conference. It was suggested if a summer scheme could also run in Newtownhamiliton this summer. Currently there is a summer scheme planned for the community centre during the summer.

Agreed for a sub group to meet regarding the outline of the summer scheme and pursing funding opportunities. Darren to organise date for Sub group: Taucher, Stephen, Ann Marie, Ita, Darren and Rosie. sub group PSNI offered letters of support for the funding application. meeting.

The other pot of money available for funding summer schemes would be Peace IV. This would be more focused around sustainability and requires 26 hours of engagement. It was agreed that the Council Financial assistance would be easier.

Impact of online bullying/cyber safety

Stephen provided an update of Internet Safety within the South Armagh area. The PSNI have visited all 26 primary schools within South Armagh and delivered training to the school children. A letter is going out to all children within primary schools in South Armagh in classes P5 to P7 inviting their parents/guardians to an Internet Safety evening in the Sacred Heart School on the 21st March.

As part of the Shared Space project the PSNI is facilitating an Internet Safety day in Newtownhamiliton High School on the 28th February 2018. There will be 4 Secondary Schools in attendance – St Joseph’s, St Paul’s, Newry High and Newtownhamiliton High.

Stephen confirmed that the PSNI can deliver Internet Safety, Farm Safety and Road Safety awareness sessions to a variety of groups including Youth Clubs, Summer Scheme’s and any community groups. 5. Family Alison from Space sent apologies for the meeting and update will be available at the next Locality Group meeting. Support Hub Update 6. Members Bulgarian Roma Community – Interagency Approach Agency Taucher provided an update on a meeting which took place in Newtownhamiliton Community Centre on Tuesday 23rd January 2018 regarding the Roma community living in Newtown. This has put a strain on community Taucher to feed Update and back at the next Emerging relations within the town. The main action from the meeting is to establish communication with the Bulgarian Roma community. A meeting between Arthur, Taucher and Darren has been arranged for Friday 2nd February. Locality group Needs meeting. Taucher will feed back at the next Locality Group meeting.

Ita contacted St Michael’s primary School in Newtownhamiliton and the school confirmed they had a number of Taucher to follow Bulgarian children enrolled within the school and that attendance was an issue. up with Wayne from EA on the 2

3 Ann Marie confirmed that the Inclusion project taking place at the Community Centre was now on hold and the Bulgarian Youth Bulgarian Youth Club was due to end in March 2018. Taucher explained it would be important to maintain Group. communication with the Bulgarian young people and this could be lost with the ending of the Youth group.

Member Updates

PSNI – Currently an Art Project in with local schools. The aim is to design a piece of art which can be placed on the outside of the station in Crossmaglen. This project is being funded by Peace IV. PSNI are also looking into TBUC for later in the year.. Have been very active delivering awareness sessions within schools. Attended Visibly Impaired Group last week to deliver Internet session.

Toybox – Madeline currently has an outreach programme for South Armagh centred around play activities for young children from the traveller community.

CAPS – Jenna currently works with young people through Alternative Education Programmes which include placements. The aim is to reduce risk of offending and improving school attendance. The programme involves working with the young people during school and also with the parents at their home. Age range is 8-13 years and the main issues within the group are internet safety. CAPS can also, link in with schools within South Armagh and offer the option of referrals to schools.

Lislea Community Association – Kate provided an overview on the Community Association which has received funding and used it to develop a range of activities and facilities within the Community Centre. A new playground is due to open, an adult fitness area, Storytelling area, a small community shed for small group activities, Lislea Ladies project and Lislea Men’s Shed all available within the Community. The development has led to a thriving uptake in participation and consequently there is a need for some update on speed control around the community centre.
