27 too 31 July 2016 SingapoSingaporere 2016 July Asian Student Leadership Conference Organised by Youth Ambassador FOREWORD

Asia student leadership conference (ASLC) 2016 (On behalf of Tanglin Trust School) I am delighted to welcome all the students, facilitators, mentors, judges and presenters to Singapore for this exciting event. Over the next few days you will all learn the value of real cooperation and teamwork as you work together to come up with your own innovative solutions to some of the most important challenges that face our global communities.

Earlier this year I was lucky enough to take part in the 2016 International Expedition to the Antarctic (IAE 2016) led by polar explorer and environmentalist Robert Swan. It was a humbling, yet inspiring experience to spend 2 weeks in the most remote place on earth together with 140 amazing young leaders from more than 40 different countries. Antarctica is the last pristine continent- a place of international cooperation for science and peace. In Singapore and other South East Asian cities Martin Foakes the situation is very different. Rapid development and rising human populations Head of Outdoor threaten the fragile natural environment and impact on the quality of life in local Education communities. But in both cases real leadership will be required to protect and Tanglin Trust School conserve our planet and its resources for the future. Of course, education has a very important role to play in developing the skills that will be required by the global citizens of tomorrow. But traditional classroom-based education itself can never be enough - you will need to know how to use your skills effectively to make a real difference in your world. Positive change can and will happen if the leaders and decision makers of tomorrow know the value of friendship and cooperation.

So today, and over the next few days as you meet some incredible people and join together to tackle some really challenging issues I would like to encourage you to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way. And if you do, you will find that true leadership cannot be learned from a book or in a traditional classroom. It will come to you because you realized that the hope for the future lies in you.

‘The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it’ Robert Swan OBE (founder of 2041 foundation, first man to walk unsupported to both South Pole and North Pole)

ASLC 2016 Theme : IMpowered

IMpowered is a play on the word empowered, which symbolizes that youth today can be equipped and motivated to become changemakers of our society. As the youth are our future, we need to empower them through strengthening their confidence, finding their place in contributing to the society and developing the courage to take action and fight for their cause. In turn, they have the potential to empower the targeted, disadvantaged communities of our society (the elderly, the children, the physically/mentally disabled). You need to be “empowered” in order to tackle any of the issues in the discussion topics.

Discussion Topics QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL For anyone to be IMPowered, none is more important than a quality education. In a knowledge-based world economy, a good education is vital for finding decent work; achieving good health; building functioning communities; developing the skills to be a dependable parent; and growing up to be an engaged and responsible citizen. Unfortunately, there is inequality for the access to quality education in the society. It can be due to income, it can be due to gender or others. GLOBALIZATION PROS AND CONS Economically, globalization means closer integration of national economies through trade and financial flows as well as cross- border migration of people. As national economies “open up” and lower their external barriers, they become more exposed – and more vulnerable – to global forces and influences. Whereas globalization opens up new opportunities for many, it also poses threat to many. Some developing nations benefitted from investment by foreign companies, some argue that globalization is causing higher unemployment in developed nations as companies shift their production overseas.

Discussion Topics ENVIRONMENT All you must have heard the phrases “climate change” or “global warming”. We all know that the environmental issue is a serious challenge to all of us. However, it took years of discussion before the world leaders finally reached an agreement at last year’s COP21 (21st Conference of Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change) in Paris on the target to reduce carbon emission in tackling the climate change. In this region, we suffer from haze almost every year, air condition of major cities is at unhealthy level, waste management is still inadequate in many parts of the communities. INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT Developing countries including around the world has been showing steady economic development. Many people are excluded from development because of their gender, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, disability or poverty. The effects of such exclusion are staggering, deepening inequality across the world. Economic development is in a way making social divide even worse. Development can be inclusive - and reduce poverty - only if all groups of people contribute to creating opportunities, share the benefits of development and participate in decision-making.

Discussion Topics SHARING ECONOMY The sharing economy, where people rent apartments, cars, boats and other assets directly from each other through the Internet, has become a buzzword these days. It is a people’s economy based on “access to” rather than “ownership of” physical and human assets like time, space and skills. While sharing goods has always been a common practice among friends, family and neighbors, in recent years, the concept of sharing has moved from a community practice into a business. Although there are criticism against companies such as Uber, AirBnb and the like that workers lose out on the benefits and protections that regular full-time employees at big companies enjoy, such as health insurance and retirement savings, there’s growing demand for services like ride sharing and short-term apartment rentals that isn’t easily met by traditional means.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Tourism is a major revenue earner for many developing countries. Many tourism locations rely on pristine natural environments with diverse plant and wildlife to draw visitors in. The grim reality is that globally, most ecosystems are becoming increasingly degraded. Sustainable tourism is an industry committed to making a low impact on the environment and local cul- ture, while helping to generate future employment for local people. The positive of sustainable tourism is to ensure that development is a positive experience for local people; tourism companies; and tourists themselves. Sustainable tourism is becoming so popular that some say that what we presently call ‘al- ternative’ will be the ‘mainstream’ in a decade.
