Justified Season One – Episode Synopsis 0100 Justified Season One – Episode Synopsis 0100 - FIRE IN THE HOLE Directed By: Michael Dinner Written By: Graham Yost Overview Following his questionable fatal shooting of a drug cartel hit man in Miami, U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is shunted off to his native Kentucky where he is assigned to investigate Boyd Crowder, a childhood friend from the coal mining town of Harlan and the prime suspect in a series of crimes tied to a white supremacist gang. As Raylan is briefed on the crime spree, Boyd masterminds the bombing of a church thought to be a front for a drug dealing operation before killing a partner he suspects is a government informant. But Raylan’s investigation gets even more personal when he is sent to look into the shooting death of Boyd’s brother, Bowman, by his wife, Ava, a woman who has had a crush on Raylan since high school. While being questioned by Raylan, Ava is visited by Boyd’s henchman, Dewey Crowe, who says his boss wants to see her at once. After Raylan sends Dewey packing with word that he wants a meeting with Boyd, a brazen bank robbery by the racist gang sends him to look for its leader at his ramshackle backwoods home. Following a tense reunion, Raylan gives Boyd 24 hours to leave Harlan County. Then, even after making it clear that he cannot be seen socializing with a defendant in a murder investigation, Raylan leaves his Marshals Service colleagues at a motel when Ava makes a cryptic phone call to alert him that she is in danger. But as Raylan heads for a showdown with Boyd, the gang quickly engages the other marshals in a violent shootout. After turning the tables on a pair of gang members who have followed him, Raylan arrives at Ava’s trailer to find her being held at gunpoint by Boyd. However, as the showdown between the two men nears what will surely be a deadly climax, Ava appears with a shotgun aimed squarely at her brother-in-law. And as she is about to shoot, Boyd goes for his own gun, only to be outdrawn by Raylan. But while he is sure he killed his nemesis, Raylan is surprised to learn that he narrowly missed Boyd’s heart and that he survived. Logline U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens returns to his native Kentucky where he comes face-to-face with an old friend who’s leading a deadly white supremacist gang. 1 0101 - RIVERBROOK Directed By: Michael Dinner Written By: Graham Yost Overview With Boyd Crowder recovering from his gunshot wounds, Raylan is sent to transport his racist sidekick Dewey Crowe to prison. Having delivered Dewey after fending off his attack in the car, Raylan gets word that two prisoners who were working as musicians at a party have escaped. Needing gas, he has the misfortune to stop at the station that has been commandeered by the two escapees, Price and Cooper. And after forcing his partner to take off running, Cooper takes Raylan’s gun and then locks him in a storeroom before making his getaway. Along with fellow marshals Rachel Brooks and Tim Gutterson, Raylan heads to see Shirley Kelso, a retired stripper and Cooper’s ex-wife. At the trailer where they find her living with her cousin Dupree, Shirley insists she hasn’t seen her ex-husband. Once the marshals have left, however, Cooper emerges from the trailer’s bedroom and, after Shirley and Dupree admit they’ve been looking for the stolen cash he hid prior to going to prison, he enlists them in his effort to recover it. But when he takes them to the house where he is sure it’s stashed, Cooper is surprised to find it isn’t there. And sure he now knows where the money is hidden, Dupree shoots Cooper and, leaving him for dead, escapes with Shirley. Meanwhile, as Raylan continues to avoid any romantic involvement with Boyd’s sister-in-law, Ava, he suspects he knows where Cooper’s money has been hidden, too. While Dupree and Shirley are in the midst of a home invasion robbery at the house where they think the money was left, Raylan and Rachel arrive at the vacant house where Cooper was wounded. Realizing the mistake Cooper made in identifying the location, the marshals track Dupree and Shirley to the home of the Lonner family. Held inside at gunpoint, the Lonners admit to finding the money beneath the floorboards of their home, but claim to have spent almost all of it. After wounding Mr. Lonner in anger, Dupree is surprised when Raylan and his team arrive at the door. And despite the fact that the couple are holding the Lonners and Raylan at bay with their weapons, Tim uses a sniper rifle to kill Dupree as Shirley is arrested. Logline The hunt for a prison escapee sends Raylan and his team into a hostage situation at the house where the convict stashed the proceeds from a bank robbery 15 years ago. 2 0102 - LORD OF WAR AND THUNDER, THE Directed By: Jon Avnet Written By: Gary Lennon Overview While the U.S. marshals are staking out the hiding place of fugitive Wilson Toomey, Raylan’s 65-year-old dad, Arlo, claims he hasn’t been paid for the house he and his wife, Helen, are renting to Stan Perkins – and takes a baseball bat to the home’s contents to retaliate. Calling in the attack himself, Arlo then passes out on the couch where he is found by Sheriff Hunter Mosley. And though Hunter gets him to apologize and promise to pay for the damage, Arlo is arrested after assaulting Perkins. Tracking Raylan down at the motel room where he is staying with Ava, Helen asks him for help. And after Raylan reluctantly bails Arlo out of jail, Perkins and a pair of thugs arrive at the Givens home, threatening Helen and demanding that Arlo return something they claim he stole from them. Though Arlo is determined to make Perkins pay for confronting Helen, Raylan insists that his dad sit tight. Questioning Perkins about the events that spawned the assaults, Raylan begins to suspect that Arlo and Helen may have simply misplaced the rent checks. But after Raylan warns Perkins to let the sheriff handle any trouble, Arlo ambushes his two thugs with a baseball bat, an assault that only stops when he has a heart attack. Meanwhile, as Ava is questioned by the U.S. Attorney about the shooting of Boyd Crowder, Raylan and Rachel’s surveillance leads to Toomey’s arrest. Told that Perkins was recently released from prison after serving time for a drug charge, Raylan heads to the hospital to see Arlo. Warning his dad against trying to pull a rent scam against a dangerous ex-con, Raylan then questions bar owner Johnny Crowder, who reveals that Perkins is dealing Oxycontin. Confronted by Raylan, Perkins admits he had a large cache of the addictive painkiller hidden in the house and insists it was stolen by Arlo. As a result, Raylan finally realizes that everything – from Arlo’s arrest following his attack on the house, to getting his son to post bail, possibly even the heart attack – is part of an elaborate scheme to rip off Perkins. Logline Following Arlo Givens’ arrest for assault, Raylan’s investigation suggests that his 65-year-old dad and stepmother may be involved in an elaborate scheme to rip off a recently paroled drug dealer. 3 0103 - COLLECTION, THE Directed By: Rod Holcomb Written By: Graham Yost Overview Along with Art Mullen, Raylan meets with gallery owner Karl Hanselmann, a collector of the paintings of Adolf Hitler, who’s helping the Marshal’s Service secure the assets of con man Owen Carnes. Finding him at the estate he shares with his wife Caryn, the agents serve Carnes with an order that makes everything he owns, including three Hitler paintings, government property. When Hanselmann says that the paintings are forgeries, Owen demands to see his art consultant, David Mortimer. But once the marshals have left, Caryn distracts Owen as her horse trainer Greg Davis shoots him in the head. With the Carnes’ fortune seized by the government, Caryn and Greg make Owen’s death look like a suicide to get the fraud case against him dismissed. And to keep David’s sale of the Hitler forgeries a secret, Caryn implicates him in the murder while still promising to burn the forged paintings to protect his reputation. When the FBI arrives to find Owen dead and a fireplace filled with the smoldering remnants of the artwork, they are indeed prepared to drop the case. But once Hanselmann confirms that the Hitler paintings could not have produced the ashes, Raylan suspects Carnes was murdered. After being questioned by Tim Gutterson, David worries that Caryn’s scheme is in danger of backfiring once he learns that the burned paintings weren’t the forgeries. Confronted by David, Caryn admits to burning some other artworks and keeping the forged Hitlers to blackmail the art consultant. Once Raylan reveals that he is on to their scheme, Caryn enlists Greg in a plot to get rid of David, too. But after luring David into her trap, Caryn is stunned to discover that Greg has cooperated with the police and recorded her admitting to killing her husband and arranging David’s murder, too. Finally, as Raylan looks to make peace with his ex- wife Winona, Hanselmann reveals the surprising truth behind his interest in the Hitler artworks.

ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

REIDELLONDON PUBLISHING HOLLAND: ENGLAND / BOSTON COMPANY: U.S.A. ALVIN I. GOLDMAN WHAT IS JUSTIFIED BELIEF? The aim of this paper is to sketch a theory of justified belief. What I have in mind is an explanatory theory, one that explains in a generalway why certain beliefs are counted as justified and others as unjustified. Unlikesome tradi- tiorial approaches, I do not try to prescribe standards for justification that differ from, or improve upon, our ordinary standards. I merely try to expli- cate the ordinary standards, which are, I believe, quite different from those of many classical, e.g., 'Cartesian', accounts. Many epistemologists have been interested in justification because of its presumed close relationship to knowledge. This relationship is intendedto be preserved in the conception of justified belief presented here. In previous papers on knowledge,1I have denied that justification isnecessary for knowing, but there I had in mind 'Cartesian' accounts of justification. On the account of justified belief suggested here, it isnecessary for knowing, and closely related to it. The term 'justified', I presume, is an evaluativeterm, a term of appraisal. Any correct definition or synonym of it would also feature evaluativeterms. I assume that such definitions orsynonyms might be given, but I am not interested in them. I want a set of substantive conditions that specify when a belief is justified.

BELL PROSECUTION DOUBTS: LEGAL EXPERTS SAY WITNESS TESTIMONY THUS FAR BOLSTERS COPS’ CLAIMS THEY OPENED FIRE IN SELF-DEFENSE Newsday - Long Island, N.Y. Author: ANTHONY M. DESTEFANO Date: Mar 10, 2008 Section: NEWS Murray Richman is considered one of the deans of the criminal defense bar in New York City. With nearly 45 years’ experience trying and handling cases, Richman, 70, thought there was strong evidence of guilt against the detectives accused in the Sean Bell shooting - at least until their trial started two weeks ago. Now, he isn’t so sure. Richman is among a number of defense attorneys contacted by Newsday - none of whom have any connection to the case - who believe that so far the charges against the three cops are facing some serious headwind. The trial resumes today in Queens State Supreme Court. “The early impression thus far, to my satisfaction, they [prosecutors] have not made a case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Richman said after court adjourned last week. Richman was commenting in particular about the most serious first-degree manslaughter charge lodged against Detectives Michael Oliver, 36, and Gescard Isnora, 29. They are also accused of assault. Det. Marc Cooper, 40, faces misdemeanor reckless endangerment charges. Bell, 23, was killed and his friends Joseph Guzman and Trent Benefield wounded on Nov. 25, 2006, in a 50-shot fusillade after they partied at the Kalua Cabaret. More evidence to come Richman and the other attorneys stressed that there was still more evidence to come for the prosecution and they could change their minds. But all agreed that witnesses called by the Queens district attorney’s office so far seemed to bolster the police officers’ self-defense argument.
