Developmental Cross Training Repertoire for Musical Theatre Women The repertoire suggestions below target specific developmental goals. It is important to keep in mind however that the distinguishing characteristic of musical theatre singing is the variability of tonal resonance within any given song. A predominantly soprano song might suddenly launch into a belt moment. A chest dominant ballad may release into a tender soprano. Story always pre-empts musical choices. “Just You Wait” from My Fair Lady is part of the soprano canon but we would be disappointed if Eliza could not tell Henry Higgins what she really felt. In order to make things easier for beginning students, it’s a good idea to find repertoire with targeted range and consistent quality as students develop skill in coordinating registration. Summer 2014 Vocal Performance Audition Packet ADVANCE SIGN UP REQUIRED FOR ALL MUSIC THEATRE STUDENTS!! All students must sign up for an audition timeslot for Tuesday, July 1st, 2014. Auditions will ONLY be held on this Tuesday, July 1st, 2014. No exceptions will be made for students who do not sign up. You may sign up on the following dates: During the break: FRIDAY, JUNE 27TH, 2014: 1:00pm-6:00pm SATURDAY, JUNE 28th, 2014: 2:00pm-3:30pm SEMESTER Week 1: MONDAY, JUNE 30TH, 2014: 1:00pm- 6:00pm Please see Matt Lemp in the Production Offices to sign up for your audition time. Auditions on Tuesday, July 1st are for Non-Musical Theatre Students (Acting and Dance Majors), and students who are returning from a semester off and who were not enrolled in the Spring 2014 Semester, Auditions will be held Tuesday, July 1st, 2014: 7pm-11pm. Upon completion of the first round auditions, production will schedule time slots for the invited callbacks. Invited Call Backs will be held Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014 and Thursday, July 3rd, 2014, 7:00pm – 11:00pm. Final Call Backs will be held Saturday, July 5th and Sunday, July 6th, 2014. Times are TBD. *Auditions/Callbacks will NOT be held on Friday, July 4th. You MUST be available for all call back dates as needed. Community Theater Lots To Love About Silhouette’s ‘She Loves Me’ at Slayton House in Columbia By Cybele Pomeroy - October 15, 2019 Share Imagine someone wanted Sondheim, but with a happy ending and genuinely lovable characters. Ta-da! She Loves Me was written in the ‘60s by Joe Masteroff (book), Sheldon Harnick (lyrics) and Jerry Bock (music) as a musical adaptation of Miklos Laszlo’s 1937 play Parfumerie. There have been a number of treatments of Laszlo’s central premise through the years, but I won’t name them in case that’s a spoiler for anyone. JOIN OUR NEWSLETTER! Silhouette Stages is currently performing She Loves Me at the Slayton House at Wilde Lake Village Center in Columbia. You’ll want your GPS, or to have been there before already for another production, perhaps Silhouette’s Cabaret (book also by Joe Masteroff) earlier this year. Inside the theater, you have the option of raked bleacher seating or chairs flat on the floor for your convenience and viewing pleasure. As for the show itself, I quite like it. Strong book, great music and excellent lyrics are always a nice start. It’s structured more like an operetta than a musical in the contemporary sense. There are a great many scene changes, a great many songs, and not many sequences with dialogue of more than a few lines. -

Peterson Fat Fairies 1 Fat Fairies: Stereotype, Body Type, and Personality of TV Godmothers (Presented at UC Berkeley’s Western States Folklore Conference on April 8, 2016) Before getting to her magical work, Cinderella’s 1950 Disney godmother rolls up her sleeves and realizes that she seems to have misplaced her wand. She bumbles about, looks under the garden bench, shakes out her dress before announcing, “Oh! I forgot: I put it away!” Busy godmothers can forget things, but this fairy’s absent mindedness doesn’t end there. Moments later this pudgy Disney godmother nods her head approvingly to send Cinderella off to the ball still dressed in her rags before realizing, “Good heavens, child! You can’t go to the ball in that!” Thus our round friend is a little absent-minded at times, but she leaves us with an iconic image of fairy godmothers: that they are chubby and therefore cheery. Fast forward now to 2015 and let’s watch this same scene. For actress Helena Bonham Carter Disney got rid of the rounded body type (though, not necessarily the round dress). But Carter’s godmother takes her pumpkin into the greenhouse to turn it into a coach—and nearly misses getting squashed by the pumpkin’s enlargement. Yes, Disney got rid of the round body from 1950, but what did that leave them with? The ditzy godmother who cannot think through her own magical spells. I wondered if these large and airheaded, chubby and cheery godmothers were just a Disney-sponsored formula. But they weren’t. From 1950-2016, animation to live-action, Disney to non-Disney, my research finds that most fairy godmothers across the film industry and on TV are either fat or foolish—and they are usually a combination of both. -

One day, it is announced that the prince is having a royal ball and invites all the ladies of quality to the ball. Cinderella wants to go the ball but she can't because she is forced to stay home and clean the whole house. Cinderella starts crying as her stepsister goes to the ball while she has to stay and clean. As Cinderella was crying and cleaning, her fairy godmother appears out of nowhere and asks, "why are you crying". Cinderella explains why she is upset to her fairy godmother. After, Cinderella explains everything, her fairy godmother uses her magic power to help Cinderella. The fairy godmother transforms all the mice, lizards, and rats into horses and coachmen for the golden coach. -
