WINTER GAMES (AWG) TEAM Selection Criteria and Procedures

1. General information • AWG 2020 will be held March 15th-21, 2020, , . Unlike previous years, this does not overlap with 2020 USAG Alaska State Championships, so gymnasts will be available to participate in both AWG and The Alaska State Meet. • Age Eligibility: athletes must have been born January 1, 2002 or later and have never competed at USAG level 7 or above. • Athletes must comply with athlete eligibility policies as defined by the Athlete Eligibility Policy in the AWG International Staging Manual. • Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska (AWGTA) Gymnastics Team Size: five. The team will consist of four (4) females, with one (1) female coach. • Rules - competition will be conducted under the rules of the Canadian Junior Olympic program, which is a modification of the USA Gymnastics (USAG) Junior Olympic LEVEL 6. These rules will be used to judge the vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. • Selection will be based on application. • Technical Package is regulations developed by the AWG International Committee on each sport. 2. How to tryout/apply* • Individuals interested in becoming members of the team need to complete and submit the application below and on the web at: www.teamalaska.org. Participants are responsible for checking the website for updates. • There is no cost to apply however, if selected for Team Alaska, there will be additional sport- specific fees that will apply. • Application packet should include: • Copy of birth certificate • Recommendation from a coach who has coached the applicant • A list of skills that the applicant can perform on competition equipment without a spotter • The application below must postmarked by November 30, 2019 and submitted by mail to:

3. Selection Standards / Basis for Selection* • Experience • Coach's recommendation: It is most important that your coach sends a letter of recommendation regarding the gymnasts' strength of character, as the strength of character is more important than her gymnastics skills. It is imperative that the gymnast is trustworthy, honest, can follow direction and is responsible. • Character References from someone besides the coach. (teacher, pastor, scout leader, etc.)

• The team will be selected no later than December 21, 2019 • Athletes selected for the team must accept the appointment, via email, by December 31, 2019. • Two alternates will be selected. • The Coach will select the athletes with confirmation by the Chef de Mission. • Additional expenses to be incurred by each individual gymnast will cover 1 practice leotard, 1 competition team leotard, 1 pair of warm up jacket and pants.

5. Alternates* • If one team member is unable to attend, the top alternate will be asked to take her spot. • If the first alternate can’t go, the second alternate will be invited. • If both alternates cannot attend, the coach/sport coordinator will select an athlete to fill the empty roster position.

6. Transportation/Travel • All members of Team Alaska will travel to and from the Games with Team Alaska, unless an exception is approved by the Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska Board of Directors. • Team Alaska will make travel arrangements and provide transportation to and from departure points for team members who reside outside the highway system. Team Alaska will also provide room and board only when the Chef determines it is necessary for off-highway athletes travelling between their point of origin and designated departure points to attend the Games. • Departure points for the Team Alaska charters are Fairbanks, Anchorage, Juneau • Team Alaska members will only be permitted to board the charters if they present a valid US passport, (for resident alien, a valid passport from the nation of their citizenship); all AWGTA registration documents; and are able to legally cross the Canadian border.
