  • Transatlantic Print Culture and the Rise of New England Literature, 1620-1630
TRANSATLANTIC PRINT CULTURE AND THE RISE OF NEW ENGLAND LITERATURE 1620-1630 by Sean Delaney to The Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of History Northeastern University Boston, MA April 2013 1 TRANSATLANTIC PRINT CULTURE AND THE RISE OF NEW ENGLAND LITERATURE 1620-1630 by Sean Delaney ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate School of Northeastern University, April 2013 2 Transatlantic Print Culture And The Rise Of New England Literature 1620-1630 Despite the considerable attention devoted to the founding of puritan colonies in New England, scholars have routinely discounted several printed tracts that describe this episode of history as works of New England literature. This study examines the reasons for this historiographical oversight and, through a close reading of the texts, identifies six works written and printed between 1620 and 1630 as the beginnings of a new type of literature. The production of these tracts supported efforts to establish puritan settlements in New England. Their respective authors wrote, not to record a historical moment for posterity, but to cultivate a particular colonial reality among their contemporaries in England. By infusing puritan discourse into the language of colonization, these writers advanced a colonial agenda independent of commercial, political and religious imperatives in England. As a distinctive response to a complex set of historical circumstances on both sides of the Atlantic, these works collectively represent the rise of New England literature. 3 This dissertation is dedicated with love to my wife Tara and to my soon-to-be-born daughter Amelia Marie.

  • Benjamin's KISS
Benjamin’s KISS: A Perspective on Music, Spectacle and Aura Rob Ahlers University of Groningen [email protected] Abstract This article explores the ontological significance of spectacle and imagery in rock music. The examination illuminates how the construct of a larger-than-life fantasy and a live performance spectacle creates a sense of auratic presence; in other words, how live performance creates a present-moment experience and a sense of being in the here and now with an authentic and original work of art. Such characteristics, as encapsulated in Walter Benjamin’s concept of “aura”, have been considered problematic or even no longer relevant. However, I will argue here that in our age of digital reproduction the aura persists and is not irrevocably lost in reproduction. Moreover, the aura is transportable and present in the 21st century live music economy, as the case of the American rock group KISS will illustrate. By analysing KISS’ marketing strategy in the 1970s and how it evolved from there into the branding, licensing, and merchandising franchise that it became during the late 1990s, this article will show what a music group can do to auratically appeal to an audience by using (and leveraging) media strategy, mysticism, and the appearance of success. KEYWORDS: KISS, Benjamin, aura, liveness, spectacle, live performance The combustible mix of personalities in KISS created an unusual dimension to their appeal, transcending what came across in their records. Building the hype for the band succeeded by exploiting this chemistry and connecting it to their visual image and the mystique of their live shows … KISS’ constant regimen of touring and seeing their fans in the flesh was crucial to the success of this image.

PROUDLY PRESENTS “KISS My Auction” You want the rarest, we’ve got the rarest… AUCTION DATES: December 4 – 11, 2005 SPECIAL PREVIEW: November 27 – December 4, 2005 On behalf of the entire Backstage Auctions Crew we would like to welcome you to the spectacular and much anticipated 2005 “KISS My Auction” event and a special welcome to the many, many new users who have registered to be a part of this “KISStorical” auction and to our loyal returning KISS customers. KISS remains one of the premier bands in the history of Rock ‘n Roll. Record holders in many categories and high rankings in most others, KISS continues to add new fans and collectors to the ever growing legion of the KISS Army. In their more than 3 decades of existence, the band has produced more memorabilia than just about anybody else. Only The Beatles and Elvis Presley have topped KISS and there is no shame in having these legends as neighbors. With such a well-documented past, discography and hundreds of publications and price guides, new discoveries and never-before-seen items are the exception, rather than the rule. And that is where Backstage Auctions comes into play. True to our philosophy of only offering items from either musicians or those professionally associated with the music industry, we have managed to bring together a group of 16 consigners who were all at one point in time formally associated with KISS. As such, Backstage Auctions is proud to present 351 auction lots that will dazzle, rattle, awe, amaze and rock and roll your imagination.

  • Pivotal Alliance
PIVOTAL ALLIANCE Recently, we ran a review of the documentary KISS Loves You. We asked the film’s director Jim Heneghan if he’d like to do an interview, he was game, and what you’ll read below is the end result. Please check out the review, but most importantly check out the DVD KISS Loves You. It’s good entertainment. Jim what inspired you to film a KISS documentary? There have been so many fan-shot films before. Granted, none that have been officially distributed like KISS Loves You. Are you a card carrying member of the KISS Army? I was never was a card carrying member of the KISS Army. I have a Tommy Bolin fan club card though. Seeing some Maysle Brother, Frederick Wiseman and early Erroll Morris films, got me thinking I could make a film. The nail in the coffin was hearing Francis Ford Coppola talk about these new small camcorders and the future of movies at the end of the documentary Hearts of Darkness. He said some unknown fat chick from Ohio was gonna make a movie and blow everybody away someday. I wanted to be the fat chick. Unfortunately the video cameras that were available when I started making KISS Loves You couldn’t create film-like images, so I chose the 16mm format. How did you get interested in film? Did you know early on that you wanted to work behind the camera? Yeah I knew I wanted to work behind the camera as soon as I understood what work was. I visited the set of Dark Shadows when I was very young and remember the fake cobwebs, dry ice, and vampires.
