BACK TO SCHOOL 2018 As the 2018 school year got underway, the School opened its doors to 136 full­time students enrolled in the many educational programs in the circus arts and pedagogy. They come from five provinces and one Canadian territory, but also 24 countries outside this one, including , Brazil, , Japan, Lebanon and Ukraine, to name a few. Welcome everyone!

A PLATEFORM FOR CIRCUS SCIENTIFIC RESOURCES You can now access a free online bibliography of more than 2,000 circus­related academic papers (articles, MA, PhD theses) and much more. This exciting tool is called the Circus Arts Research Platform (CARP). A completely new collaborative platform of scientific resources in circus arts, it aims to foster collaboration among researchers, students and professionals interested in studying all aspects.

The project is the result of a collaboration between the School's CRITAC and the research and documentation centers of the Centre national des arts du cirque (CNAC, ) Circuscentrum (), and Circusinfo Finland. Access the platform

Every fall, the School's teachers crisscross the country to meet young circus aspirants. The National Pre­Selection Tour makes stops in a dozen cities from St. John's, Newfoundland to , British Columbia. It provides an opportunity for young students of the circus arts, dance, gymnastics or acrobatic sports between the ages of 9 and 17 to experience an audition. As well, they can meet with our teachers and learn more about the circus arts programs and training requirements.

STUDENT FOR A DAY CONTEST Another autumn tradition, the Student For a Day contest, offers many young people a chance to spend a day at the School. The young people selected are paired with a NCS student or group to experience how intense a circus artist's training can be. Entries accepted until October 31, 2018. Enter online

THE FIRST ST­JOHN'S CIRCUS FEST NCS students and graduates will appear on the playbills of the first circus festival held in the province of Newfoundland, . On September 28, students Alyssa Bunce, Sandy Tugwood and Robert Cookson will perform with the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marc David. The festival was created by Anahareo White­Malone, a 2002 graduate. GRADUATES IN SHOWS THIS FALL Among the many circus shows slated to be held in this fall at either TOHU or Place des Arts are:

Machine de cirque by Machine de cirque from October 10 to 14 / with the company’s 4 graduate co­founders: Ugo Dario, Raphael Dubé, Marxim Laurin, Yohanne Trépanier. Passagers by The 7 Fingers, from November 14 to January 5 / with 6 graduates among the artists: Sereno Aguilar, Louis Loyal, Maude Parent, Samuel Renaud, Brin Schoellkopf, Sabine Van Rensburg. A creation by Shana Carroll, also an alumna! Hotel by Cirque Eloize, from November 14 to 17 / with 11 graduates: Andrei Anissimov, Tuedon Ariri, Una Benett, Julius Bitterling, Philippe Dupuis, Cory Marsh, Cesar Mispelon, Cooper Smith, Emma Rogers, Jérémy Vitupier, Antonin Wicky.

IN BRIEF

Learning to teach circus arts – Become a circus educator and train world­class artists or introduce circus arts to young and old alike. The School offers courses at different levels. The Instructor of Circus Arts online course session begins October 6, 2018. Enrol before September 24th. Learn more

Appointements – The National Circus School has promoted Christine Thibaudeau to the position of Director of Technical Services and Production; Marilou Cousineau becomes Assistant Director of the College Program and Continuing Education; and Jean­Philippe Dalcourt is now Head Rigger. Journées de la culture – The School opens its doors to school groups and the general public on September 28 and 29. Between 11 am and 4 pm, visitors can tour the studios and immerse themselves in the world of future circus artists as they train. They also will see some of the graduating class’ creations in progress, the numbers they will perform during the Annual Shows. For more information.
