Family of Thomas MARRIS of Wrawby (d.1770)

First Generation

1. Thomas Marris was buried on 30 Oct 1770 in Wrawby, Lincs.

Thomas Marris of Wrawby was the son of George Marris (bapt 1654) of Barrow upon Humber and his wife Ann neé Uppleby.

Note: Although Thomas Marris is Person 1 in this document, in the full pedigree, he is Person 23.8. His father, George Marris of Barrow upon Humber, Lincs., is Person 22.11. See “Marris of Burton Corner.pdf” on https://www.marrisfamilyhistory.uk/.

Thomas Marris made his will (LCC Wills 1770/112) on 21 February 1768. In his will, he described himself as Thomas Marris of Wrawby in the County of Lincoln, farmer. His will (see below) provides ample proof of relationships and his place in the Marris pedigree accepted by the College of Arms in 1940.

One of his descendants was Edward Gillyatt Marris (1786-1829) who changed his name by deed poll to Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt and who married Charlotte Hargrave at Liverpool, Lancs, on 26 Aug 1822. Some of the Gillyatt descendants are included in this tree.

Thomas married (2) Sarah Dunn on 14 Jun 1754 in Wootton, Lincs.

Thomas Marris of Wrawby made his will (LCC Wills 1770/112) on 21 February 1768, giving his occupation as farmer. Some of those named in the will were:

his wife Sarah Marris, his sons Thomas Marris, George Marris & John Marris, his daughters Sarah Dudding, Elizabeth Marris, Hannah Marris & Ann Sheerwood, two nieces Catharine Marris & Mary Marris (both of Goxhill) and his sister-in-law Ann Richardson who was the mother of Catharine & Mary Marris of Goxhill.

Ann Richardson, William Marris’s sister in law in the above will, was born Ann Wakelin and was previously married to William Marris’s brother George Marris of Goxhill.

Thomas and Sarah had the following children:

13 F xii. Elizabeth Marris was christened on 27 Feb 1755 in Wrawby, Lincs. She was buried on 17 Mar 1755 in Wrawby, Lincs.

14 F xiii. Elizabeth Marris was christened on 26 Aug 1756 in Wrawby, Lincs.

4. Thomas Marris (Thomas) was christened on 13 Apr 1732 in Barrow. He died on 2 Aug 1811 in Cadney, Lincs. He was buried in Cadney, Lincs.

Thomas married Ellen Dudding on 17 Apr 1759 in Wootton, Lincs. Ellen was born about 1735. She died on 25 Mar 1823 in Cadney, Lincs. She was buried on 8 Apr 1823 in Cadney, Lincs.

Thomas Marris made his will (LCC Wills 1812/210) on 27th May 1807. It was proved on 30th January 1812. In his will, Thomas described himself as a farmer of Barrow and named numerous relatives including sons, daughters, grand-children and his Ellen Marris, his wife.

An MI at All Saints, Cadney, reads:

Thomas Marris, died 2nd August 1811, aged 79 years. Also, Hellen (wife), died 25th March 1823, aged 88 years. Also, William Marris (son), died 1st May 1827, aged 56 years.

Thomas and Ellen had the following children:

+ 17 M i. Thomas Marris was christened on 8 Apr 1760. He died on 12 Jun 1805.

18 M ii. John Marris was christened on 15 Jun 1762 in Cadney, Lincs. He was buried on 23 Apr 1763 in Cadney, Lincs.

19 M iii. George Marris was christened on 22 Jan 1763 in Cadney, Lincs. He died on 14 Feb 1786 in Cadney, Lincs. He was buried on 16 Feb 1786 in Cadney, Lincs.

20 F iv. Ann Marris was christened on 28 Dec 1766 in Cadney, Lincs.

Ann married John Dudding on 8 Dec 1796 in Cadney, Lincs. John was born about 1766.

An Ann Dudding appear in the 1841 Census at Cadney. One presumes that this was widow Ann Dudding (née Marris) living with her brother John Marris. The entry reads:

John Marris, 70, Independent, Y Ann Dudding, 70, Independent, Y

21 M v. John Marris was christened on 8 May 1768 in Cadney, Lincs. He died on 14 May 1847 in Cadney, Lincs. He was buried on 18 May 1847 in Cadney, Lincs.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 3 Also, Ellen his niece (sic) died 30th August 1856, aged 67 years.

The Ellen referred to was the daughter of Thomas & Ann Bust Marris.

+ 22 F vi. Ellen Marris was christened on 8 Oct 1769.

23 M vii. William Marris was christened on 24 Mar 1771 in Cadney, Lincs. He died on 1 May 1827 in Cadney, Lincs. He was buried on 4 May 1827 in Cadney, Lincs.

William married Jane. Jane died on 2 Apr 1849 in Cadney-cum-Howsham, Lincs.

The 1841 Census at Cadney cum Horsham, Lincs, shows:

Jane Marris, 60, Farmer, Y . . . and 5 Servants

William made his will (LCC Wills 1827/187) on 12th April 1826. It was proved on 15th November 1827. The probatum confirms that William died on 1st May 1827. In the will, William describes himself as Gentleman of Cadney. The will mentions property at Kirmington. It mentions his wife Jane Marris - but their marriage has not been located.

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

William Marris (Gentleman) late of Cadney, Lincs. d. 01 May 1827. Letters of Administration with the Will annexed. £200. Left unadministered by Jane Marris (Widow, Relect) & John Marris (Brother). To: William Ogg of . (Nephew, Farmer). Former grant at Lincoln Consistory Court in November 1827.

and:

Jane Marris (Widow) late of Cadney-cum-Howsham, Lincs. d. 02 Apr 1849 at Glanford , Lincs. £50. Admon To; William Ogg of Market Rasen, Lincs. (Nephew, Farmer).

An MI at All Saints, Cadney, reads:

Thomas Marris, died 2nd August 1811, aged 79 years. Also, Hellen (wife), died 25th March 1823, aged 88 years. Also, William Marris (son), died 1st May 1827, aged 56 years.

24 F viii. Mary Marris was christened on 21 Nov 1773 in Nettleton, Lincs. Mary married John Chapman on 21 May 1789 in Cadney, Lincs.

10. George Marris (Thomas) was christened on 26 Feb 1745/1746 in Wootton, Lincs. He died on 6 May 1818 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He was buried on 6 May 1818 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

George married Ann Gillyatt on 10 May 1771 in Elsham, Lincs. Ann was born about 1749. She died on 28 Sep 1822 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. She was buried on 28 Sep 1822 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

George made his will (LCC Wills 1818/159) on 25th July 1816. It was proved on 26th October 1818. When he made his will, George described himself as a grazier of . (The probatum described him as William Marris of Wickenby.)

George left all of his properties (locations unspecified) to his wife Ann for life and, after her decease, these to be equally divided between his sons William Marris and Robert Marris. He also left his children various monetary amounts, including the following:

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 4 "I give and bequeath unto my said Son Edward Gilliatt Gilliatt the sum of One Hundred Pounds my said Son having been very amply provided for by my and his late Friend Mr Gilliatt is the reason I do not bequeath him a legacy equal to any of my other children and hope he will not think or impute the smallnefs of the Sum to any want of Affection or respect for him.".

At various points in the will, George refers to the above son as "Edward Gilliatt Gilliat (late Edward Gilliatt Marris). This is the Edward, described below, who changed his surname from Marris to Gillyatt by Deed Poll.

An MI at St Martin, Kirmond le Mire, Lincs, reads:

Near this spot lies the remains of George Marris interred May 6th 1818, aged 73 years,Also Ann his wife September 28th 1822 aged 73 years.[inside the church, tablet]

George and Ann had the following children:

25 F i. Mary Marris was christened on 9 Feb 1772 in Elsham, Lincs. She was buried on 2 Mar 1772 in Elsham, Lincs.

26 M ii. Thomas Marris was christened on 11 Aug 1773 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He was buried on 24 Apr 1844 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

In the 1990s, another Marris researcher provided me with the wife and descendants of a Thomas Marris whom she thought was this one. However, her theory appears to be wrong as the Thomas shown here was more likely of Binbrooke and was buried at Kirmond. The LFHS has a burial entry for Thomas Marris at Kirmond Le Mire, Lincs,on 24 Apr 1844, describing him as Age 71, of Binbrook.

27 M iii. John Marris was christened on 8 Sep 1774 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

Note that the Kirkby Collection (held at the Lincolnshire Archives) suggests that John was baptised at Elsham on 9th June 1775. However, the Kirmond-le-Mire version looks preferable since I have seen the entry in the actual PRs.

+ 28 M iv. William Marris was christened on 22 Oct 1775. He died on 14 Jun 1865.

29 F v. Mary Ann Marris was christened on 7 Dec 1776 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

30 F vi. Anne Marris was christened on 4 Jan 1778 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

31 M vii. George Marris was christened on 5 Apr 1779 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He was buried on 2 Jan 1781 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

32 M viii. Robert Marris was christened on 5 Apr 1779 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He died on 22 Mar 1843 in Burbrooke, Lincs. He was buried on 25 Mar 1843 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

The 1841 Census at Orford Extra Parochial, Lincs, shows:

Robert Marris, 60, Ind, Y

An obituary in the Hull Advertiser records the death of Robert Marris in 1843, a farmer of Binbrooke, age 62.

33 M ix. John Marris was christened on 2 Jul 1780 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He was buried on 22 Nov 1780 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

36 F xii. Harriet Marris was christened on 27 Sep 1784 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. She was buried on 11 Oct 1784 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

+ 37 M xiii. Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt (né Marris) was christened on 14 May 1786. He died on 13 Feb 1829.

38 F xiv. Sarah Marris was christened on 2 Mar 1788 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. She was buried on 11 Oct 1788 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

17. Thomas Marris (Thomas, Thomas) was christened on 8 Apr 1760 in Cadney, Lincs. He died on 12 Jun 1805.

We know from his father's will that Thomas Marris was dead by 27th May 1807. Thomas died intestate and an administration (LCC Admons 1805/54) was granted to his widow Ann Bust Marris of Kirmington 13th August 1805. The Admon gives Thomas' date of death as 12th June 1805.

Thomas married Ann Bust . Ann died on 28 Apr 1824. She was buried on 1 May 1824 in Cadney, Lincs.

Thomas' wife, Ann Bust Marris of Kirmington, made her will (LCC Wills 1824/179) on 30th October 1823. She died on 28th April 1824 and the will was proved on 25th October 1824.

Another Marris researcher noted a possible marriage in the Hull Holy Trinity PRs. Thomas Marris, 21 of Kirmington, married Ann Bush Clayton, 24, of Hull on 18 Oct 1787. Coincidentally, one of Ann Bust Marris's grandchildren was Caroline Clayton Marris. The fly in the ointment is that the PR gives the age of Thomas as only 21 at the time of his marriage which, if true, would mean he was born around 1765/66. Perhaps the PR was misread and his age was in fact 27 - which would fit much more nicely with the Thomas Marris shown here.

Thomas and Ann Bust had the following children:

40 F i. Ellen Marris was christened on 4 May 1788 in Kirmington, Lincs. She died on 30 Aug 1856. She was buried on 2 Sep 1856 in Cadney, Lincs.

The 1841 Census at Kirmington shows:

Charles Marris, 35, Farmer, Y Ellen Marris, 40, Y Sarah Wright, 20, FS, Y John Drewry, 16, MS, Y

It is presumably the same brother and sister who appear in the 1851 Census at Kirmington despite the age discrepancies. The entry reads:

Charles(?) Marris, Head, Un, 50, Farmer, 120 Acres, Kirmington, Lincs Ellen Marris, Sister, Un, 56, Housekeeper, Kirmington, Lincs.

An MI at All Saints, Cadney, reads:

John Marris, died 14th May 1817, aged 78 years. Also, Ellen his niece (sic) died 30th August 1856, aged 67 years.

41 F ii. Mary Marris was christened on 2 Aug 1789 in Kirmington, Lincs. Mary married George Patchett on 2 Nov 1815 in Kirmington, Lincs.

+ 42 M iii. Thomas Marris was christened on 19 Jan 1791. He died on 21 Dec 1855.

43 F iv. Ann Marris was christened on 30 Sep 1792 in Kirmington, Lincs. Ann married Josiah Birkinshaw in 1814 in Kirmington, Lincs.

44 M v. John Marris was christened on 17 Aug 1794 in Kirmington, Lincs. He died on 25 Oct 1813. He was buried on 28 Oct 1813 in Cadney, Lincs.

An MI at All Saints, Cadney, reads:

John Marris, died 25th October 1813, aged 19 years.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 7

One assumes the above MI relates to this John Marris but it would be useful to have supporting evidence. The Cadney PRs record the burial of this same John on 28th October 1813 describing him as aged 19 and of Brigg.

45 M vi. Charles Marris was christened on 14 Jan 1798 in Kirmington, Lincs. He died on 6 Sep 1868. He was buried on 8 Sep 1868 in Cadney, Lincs.

Charles Marris was in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses at Kirmington, Lincs, with his sister (see Ellen Marris above).

And, in 1861, he was at 41 Enginegate, Louth, Lincs, in the household of Josiah Burkishaw and his wife Ann (who was Charles Marris's sister), as follows:

Josiah Burkinshaw, Head, Mar, 69, Retired Farmer, born Grasby Lincolnshire Ann Burkinshaw, Wife, Mar, 68, born Kirmington Lincolnshire Ellen Burkinshaw, Daur, Un, 37, born Grasby Lincolnshire Charles Marris, Visitor, Un, 55, Retired Farmer, born Kirmington Lincolnshire . . . and 1 Servant

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

Charles Marris (Batchelor & Gentleman) late of Kirmington, Lincs. d. 06 Sep 1868. £8,000. Admon To; Ann Burkinshaw (wife of Josiah Burkinshaw, Gentleman) of Louth, Lincs, the sister and one of the next of kin of the deceased.

An MI at All Saints, Cadney, reads:

Charles Marris, died 6th September mdcccliii (1853?), aged lii (52 years?).

The years in brackets were added with question marks by the transcriber. One assumes that the Roman numerals were unclear. From his Admon, the true date was 6th September 1868. Also, the Cadney PRs record his burial two days later on 8th September 1868 which means he was aged 69 when he died.

22. Ellen Marris (Thomas, Thomas) was christened on 8 Oct 1769 in Cadney, Lincs.

Ellen married William Hogg on 24 Dec 1793 in Wrawby, Lincs.

Details for the children of William & Eleanor (Ellen) Hogg were provided by a descendant of this couple.

William and Ellen had the following children:

46 M i. Charles Marris Hogg was christened on 6 Jul 1794 in Helpringham, Lincs.

Charles Marris Hogg was a cabinet maker.

Charles married Mary Robinson on 17 Jul 1831 in Manchester Cathedral, Manchester, Lancs.

47 M ii. William Hogg was christened on 26 May 1799 in Goxhill, Lincs.

48 M iii. Thomas Hog was christened on 13 Oct 1803 in Cadney, Lincs.

IGI has baptism as 30 Oct 1803 rather than 13 Oct 1803.

49 F iv. Ann Marris Ogg was christened on 22 Dec 1805 in Cadney, Lincs. She died on 30 Nov 1824. She was buried in Haxey, Lincs.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 8

An MI at St Nicholas, Haxey, Lincs, reads

Ann Marris Ogg, daughter of William and Ellen Ogg, died 30th November 1824, aged 19 years, Also of Judith Marris Ogg (no date).

50 F v. Jane Hogg was christened on 17 Jul 1808 in Cadney, Lincs.

51 F vi. Judith Marris Ogg was christened on 10 Mar 1811 in Cadney, Lincs. She was buried in Haxey, Lincs.

28. William Marris (George, Thomas) was christened on 22 Oct 1775 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He died on 14 Jun 1865 in Market Rasen, Lincs. He was buried in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

William married (1) Mary Dudding on 22 Jul 1805 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. Mary died in Jan 1814 in Wickenby, Lincs.

They had the following children:

52 M i. William Marris was born about 1806/1808. He died on 6 Apr 1824. He was buried in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

53 M ii. George Edward Marris was born in 1808 in Tetford, Lincs. He was christened on 31 May 1808 in Tetford, Lincs. He died on 12 May 1867. He was buried on 15 May 1867 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

George Edward Marris is named in his father's will.

The 1841 Census at Kirmond le Mire, Lincs, shows:

Geo. Edwd Marris, 30, Farmer, Y Thomas Marris, 68, Y Robt Duding(?) Marris, 20, Y Eliza Marris, 15, Y Maria Mills, 6, N . . . and 3 Ag Labs and 3 Servants

It is not clear whether Eliza Marris (15) above was Robert's wife or indeed what relationship Maria Mills (6) had to the family, if any.

If the above is the same George Edward Marris, then the above Thomas (68) was his uncle and Robt Duding(?) Marris (20) his younger brother.

The 1851 Census at Kirmond le Mire, Lincs, shows:

George Edw Marris, Head, Un, 42. Farmer, 800 Acres, 35 Labs. Tetford, Lincs William Marris, Father, Wid, 75, Retired, Kirmond, Lincs.

William married (2) Judith Dudding on 10 May 1817 in Holy Trinity, Hull, Yorks. Judith was born about 1780. She died on 1 Feb 1849. She was buried in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs.

According to a present-day Dudding researcher, Mary and Judith Dudding were sisters, the daughters of Robert Dudding of Cadney who himself was a brother of the Ellen Dudding who married Thomas Marris on 17 April 1759.

The 1841 Census at Sotby, Lincs, shows:

William Marris, 65, Y Judith Marris, 60, Y . . . and 6 Servants

William Marris appears with his son George Edward Marris in the 1851 Census at Kirmond le Mire:

George Edw Marris, Head, Un, 42, Farmer, 800 Acres, 35 Labs, Tetford, Lincs William Marris, Father, Wid, 75, Retired, Kirmond, Lincs.

William Marris made his will on 27th February 1854 and added a codicil on 9th July 1859 that mentions that his son, Edward, had become incapable of managing his own affairs. The will was proved at Lincoln on 15th December 1865. In his will, William describes himself as a Gentleman of Kirmond le Mire. The probatum describes him as "formerly of Kirmond le Mire and late of Market Rasen" and says that he died at Market Rasen. Kirkby also tells us that William died on 14th June 1865, and that the death occurred at the residence of Dr Tucking at Market Rasen, and that oil paintings of both his wives passed to William's grandson George Marris of Kennington (?Kensington).

The index of wills at Somerset House shows:

William Marris (Gentleman), formerly of Kirmond le Mire but late of Market Rasen, Lincs. d. 14 Jun 1865 at Market Rasen. £5,000. To; George Edward Marris (Gentleman, Son & one of the Executors) of Kirmond Le Mire.

An MI at St Martin, Kirmond le Mire, reads:

William Marris, 14th June 1865, aged 89, And his wife Judith 1st February 1849, aged 69. John Marris, 24th August 1880, aged 4 months. William Marris, 6th April 1824, aged 16 years. (another Marris researcher read the age as 18 years) Edward Marris, 26th November 1869, aged 58 years.

[Not sure who the infant John was – presumably a grandchild]

William and Judith had the following children:

+ 57 M vi. Robert Dudding Marris was christened on 20 Nov 1818.

37. Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt (né Marris) (George, Thomas) was christened on 14 May 1786 in Kirmond-le-Mire, Lincs. He died on 13 Feb 1829 in Wickenby, Lincs.

This is the Edward Gillyatt Marris who changed his name by deed poll to Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt. A researcher of the Gillyatt line told me that Edward Gillyatt Marris' mother, Ann Marris (née Gillyatt) had a first cousin called Edward Gillyatt, a wealthy man who worked for the Bank of in . It is believed that he was godfather to Edward Gillyatt Marris. Edward of the Bank died childless and left his entire fortune of over £20,000 in 1789 to his godson on the understanding he would change his name to Gillyatt. This he did, and his descendants thereby had the name of Gillyatt instead of Marris.

30 Sep 2015 (V3) © G Philip Marris Page 11 According to the Kirkby Collection at the Lincoln Archives: "Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt Esq of Wickenby House, Co. Lincoln, son of Geo. Marris of Kirmond by his wife Anne, married Charlotte, Dau of the Rev. Charles Hargrave, Rector of Eyam, Derby. Charlotte died at Cressington Park, Liverpool on 19th November 1867, aged 75, and was buried at Wickenby(?) six days later on 25th November". Kirkby adds that Edward Gillyatt Gillyatt was a captain in the Royal North Lincoln Militia in 1809.

In "Alumni Cantabrigienses, JA Venn Part II 1752-1900, Vol IV" which lists past students of Cambridge University, we find:

The NZ Papers Past web site (Southland Times) recorded the death and burial of Eliza Marris, widow of Robert Dudding Marris.

Note also a possible descendant of this couple. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission shows the WW1 death of Lance Corporal Robert Charles Marris on 4th October 1917 at the age of 21. He was serving with the Wellington Regiment N.Z.E.F., 17th Coy. 3rd Bn.

He is shown as the son of Helen Marris, of 53, Baker St., Parkside, Dunedin, and the late Robert Dudding Marris. Native of Auckland. Employed in Government Census Offices.

I previously had Eliza Marris buried on 14 Mar 1923 at Cadney, Lincs, The Cadney PRs described her as age 69, of Howsham.

On reflection, I now think the burial refers to another Eliza Marris - the Eliza Marris (nee Green) who was married to John Marris (b.1856/7-??) who married Eliza Green in 1877. See “Marris of Healing” tree.

The VRI shows the marriage on 4 Dec 1851 at Hook, Yorks, between John Marris & Sarah Clark. The VRI gives the name of John's father as Thomas Marris. Sarah's father was given as George Clark. One would need to check the actual PR to be sure this was the right Sarah (assuming the marriage entry recorded the groom's Parish).
