Part One: Y-VISP Orientation Schedule & Calendar of Events

Schedule of Orientation Events

Y-VISP students are expected to attend all mandatory orientation events. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Wednesday, August 26

 Continuous, Y-VISP students arrive: Shuttles depart from JFK at 1pm and 6pm

 3pm, 1st shuttle arrival, Phelps Gate

 Set up Post Office Boxes at Elm Street Post Office With Peer Liaisons o (In advance) Follow this link and sign-up in advance for a P.O. Box: http://yalecollege.yale.edu/content/mail-and-shipping o (In person) You can pick up your P.O. Box key in person at the Yale Station Post Office o If you do not purchase your P.O. Box in advance, you can sign up and purchase a P.O. Box in person o You must bring TWO forms of identification (e.g. passport and visa)

 5pm, Dinner, o Meet in front of (High St.)

 9pm, 2nd shuttle arrival, Phelps Gate o Students who are already on campus, meet at Harkness Tower (High St.) to help the 2nd group move in

Thursday, August 27

 7:30-8:30am, Breakfast, Branford College o Meet at Harkness Tower (74 High St.), and we’ll walk to Branford’s dining hall together

 12:30pm, Lunch, Branford College

 3:30pm, Purchase Cell Phones, Sprint, AT & T, T-Mobile o Students are welcome to purchase their own phones with another carrier on their own time; these stores are near the bank and most students purchased their phones here last year

 7:30pm, Computer set-up session with help from the Student Tech Collaborative

Friday, August 28

 8-9am, Breakfast,

 10:30-12:00pm, Academics and Writing at Yale, WLH 120, presented by: o Professor Alfred Guy, Writing Center, Lecturer, English Department

 12pm, Lunch, Saybrook College

 1:30pm, Check-in at Office of International Students &Scholars (OISS), 421 Temple Street Students should bring: o Passport o Immigration document (I-20 or DS-2019) o I-94 number (Have your I-94 number available on a portable device or bring a hard copy printout. You cannot print at OISS, so print this in advance if you need to!)

 2:30-4:00pm Intercontinental Transitions, OISS, presented by o Jane Edwards, Dean of International and Professional Experience

 6:00pm, Dinner with Peer Liaisons, Saybrook College

 7:30pm, Y-VISP/PL Bonding, Bluebook party, Navigating course registration, Computing Session o Location will be determined by Y-VISP Peer Liaisons o Bring your laptop to this session. You will need them for bluebooking, and also to set-up your computer so that you are connected to Yale’s systems and resources.

Saturday, August 29

 8-9:00am, Breakfast, Branford College

 10am, Freshmen Assembly and Y-VISP photo, Woolsey Hall o Meet in Beinecke Plaza by 10am o Proper attire should be worn (semi-formal, shirt and tie for men). Family members and guests of students are invited to attend and take seats in the rear section of Woolsey, the parquet terraces, and the first balcony. Doors to Woolsey will open at 10 am for the 10.30 am assembly. Additional seating for families and guests to view a simulcast of this event is available at the Law School, in the air-conditioned 3

Levinson Auditorium, located at 127 Wall Street. This event will also be streamed live on Yale’s YouTube channel.

 11:30am-1pm, President’s Reception, Beinecke Rare Book Library, corner of Wall and High Streets

 12-1:00pm, Lunch, Residential Colleges

 2:00-4:30pm, Trip to Target to purchase any necessary supplies o Meet in front of Phelps at 1:45pm

 5-8pm, Dinner with Peer Liaisons and conversation about social scene at Yale, Location TBD

Sunday, August 30

 10am, Brunch, Branford College

 11:30am, Visit Thimble Islands, Branford, o http://thimbleislandcruise.com/ o Bus departs from Phelps Gate at 11:30am o In event of rain, we will go to a trampoline park instead. Departure will still be 11:30am from Phelps Gate.

 11:00am-12pm, Meet Y-VISP Academic Adviser, WLH 120

 12:00-1:00pm, Lunch, Commons

 1:30pm, Global Perspectives Inventory, WLH 120 o Our colleague from the Tec de Monterrey will lead Global Perspectives Inventory exercise o Please bring your Laptop to this meeting o Peer Liaisons will lead letter writing exercise

 1:30pm, Sharing exercise & Letter to self, WLH 120 o Bring object or photo that best represents you, your background, your country, etc. and be prepared to share o Self-reflection and letter-writing exercise 4

 5-6pm, Dinner with Peer Liaisons, Branford College

Tuesday, September 1

 8-9am, Continental Breakfast, Commons

 9:30am-11:00am, Attend registration meeting in residential college o Your residential college dean will be in touch with you about this. If you do not hear from him or her about it, please feel free to contact them (and their administrative assistants) directly. You will likely be invited to attend the junior class registration meeting, because all Y-VISP students are classified as “juniors” in Yale’s systems.

 12pm, Lunch, Residential College dining halls, TBD o Your Peer Liaisons will coordinate with you to pick a dining hall

 2-3:30pm, Academic Fair, William L. Harkness Hall, 100 Wall Street, and Linsly-Chittenden Hall, Old Campus o Representatives from academic departments and programs in Yale College will hold information sessions, orientation meetings, and consultations with new students. A complete list of participating departments and meeting locations will be available at the main entrances of the buildings

 4:00-5:30pm, “Writing a Life”, Woolsey Hall, Corner of College and Grove Streets o Meet at flagpole in Beinecke Plaza at 4pm o Keynote address by Beverly Frances Gage, Professor of History o Y-VISP students are required to attend and be in their seats on the main floor of Woolsey Hall by 4:15pm. Semi-formal attire should be worn.

 5:30pm, Dinner, Old Campus (unless invited by your dean to Freshmen Dinner) o Some of you might be invited by your dean to eat in the residential colleges. Please do not approach your dean about this! Let them approach you. If they have not invited you, it is because they don’t think it is an appropriate event for you to attend. If they do invite you, excellent! Each dean will handle this differently. If you are invited by your dean to dine in your college for the Freshmen Dinners, please note that proper attire should be worn (semi-formal, shirt and tie for men). If you eat dinner on Old Campus, casual dress is fine.

 Classes Begin

Saturday, September 5

 7-9pm, Yale Up!, , 70 Tower Parkway o Paint your faces and don your Yale gear to come learn some of Yale’s oldest (and newest) traditions. This year is the 100th anniversary of the and we want you to be ready to join in the fun. There will be songs, prizes, and college pride for all.

Sunday, September 6

 11am, Brunch, location TBD o Meet Peer Liaisons for brunch, Morse or Ezra Stiles dining hall (TBD)

 12–3, Bazaar of Registered Undergraduate Organizations and Payne Whitney Gymnasium Open House, Payne Whitney Gymnasium, 70 Tower Parkway o Representatives of registered undergraduate organizations will lead introductions to student-run activities. Payne Whitney Gymnasium open house will provide information about intramural and club sports, physical education classes, tickets for varsity events, and Dawg Pound membership. The Ace Israel Fitness Center will be open for personal workouts. Brochures for self-guided tours will be distributed.

Monday, September 7

Note: September 7 is Labor Day. Most University offices will be closed. Classes do not meet.
