TALENT ACADEMY 2016 Preparation for Audition in Dance International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) DSA-JC Applicants

Applicants should have extensive training in dance. A high degree of self-motivation and self-discipline to embrace all aspects of dance must also be demonstrated.

Applicants who wish to gain admission to SOTA’s Year 5 Dance (IB Diploma Program) will need to meet the following pre-requisites:

• Extensive training in dance • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of diverse dance forms • Advanced ability to analyse and investigate diverse dance genres • Advanced ability to choreograph in a variety of dance styles • Excellent standard of English (spoken and written)

An interest in dance as a language for expression and communication is also essential.

Shortlisting for Dance applicants

Applicants are expected to submit a ONE-minute video recording of themselves performing a dance of their choice. It should be taken in a studio setting (or any open space/room), with candidates dressed in plain, form-fitting dance-practice gear.

The video should be recorded in a single take (no editing) and cannot be professionally produced. Applicants should submit a link of the video recording in one of the following file formats: *.mov, *.m4v, *.mp4. The name of the applicant and Talent Academy Index Number should be clearly indicated (e.g.: Chantel_Yew_F001.mov).

Applicants must also submit a recent 4R full-length photograph of themselves dressed in their dance attire, and all relevant credentials. Please refer to the examples provided at Annex A for the 4R full-length photograph.

Relevant credentials may include the following items:

(a) Dance examination certificates and result reports. (b) Evidence of participation in dance performances in and/or out of school, such as participation in Singapore Youth Festival performances, summer schools, competitions, concerts or workshops. (c) Letters of reference from schools or teachers, testifying to the applicant’s artistic experience and merit.

Supporting documents, portfolios and photographs submitted for shortlisting will be retained for the school’s records. Shortlisted applicants will be informed via email attend the Talent Academy.

What You Will Experience During the Talent Academy

During the Talent Academy, all shortlisted applicants will participate in Classical and classes alongside the current SOTA Dance students to be assessed on their technical, musical and artistic abilities.

Shortlisted applicants are also required to sit for a Cognitive Exercise. The cognitive exercise is meant to gauge the applicant's ability to reason and to express ideas coherently using the English language. The exercise may comprise multiple-choice questions and a writing exercise that requires a short response to a text or an issue.

Attire for the Technique Classes

All applicants must be present and punctual in the stated venue, warmed-up, and ready for audition in the following attire:

Female applicants

(any colour) • Convertible ballet or leggings (cut out at the soles) • Ballet / dance slippers • A towel and something to keep warm (e.g. a tracksuit) • Hair should be pulled away from the face and neatly tight into a bun

Male applicants

• Close-fitted singlet top (any colour) • Opaque coloured tights / bicycle shorts • White socks (lightweight sports socks - above ankle, below calf muscle) • Canvas ballet flats / dance slippers • A towel and something to keep warm (e.g. a tracksuit) • Hair should be neatly groomed
