17th century treatises on the Coronation f.24 ‐ the office of marshal. [failed petition of the Mowbray executors that they should have the right to nominate the marshal at the 1399 coronation, in the absence of Thomas. They are unaware of his death]

‘As the office of marshal of has been granted to the earl of Westmorland ... Petition of the duke of Norfolk’s council that he has the right to the office. Richard Burgh, Robert Goushill and Thomas Brunham, appointed as his attorneys ... a certain petition in the following words ...

To our most hon. lord the setward of England, a petition to your most hon. lordship of Thomas, d. Norfolk, marshal of England, as he and his heirs should have the use of the office and its profits, and all other things pertaining to the office .. granted to the said Ralph as the duke is out of the realm, by a judgement of Richard who was lately king ...

.. by an ordinance made for the coronation of the most redoubtable lord the king ... the late king’s judgement by which he forfeited the office for his inheritance. That another sufficient person should be ordained by the attorneys of the duke to nominate to the office in the name and right of the said duke. And, that the fees and profits apertaining and regarding to the said office should be received by them in the name of the said duke ...’ f.92 ‐ The petition of Margaret, css. Norfolk to , d. Lancaster, in 1377, claiming the right to exercise the office of marshal at Richard II’s coronation.

Margaret claimed that her father had exercised the office, who had acquired it by the descent of Gilbert Marshal, lord of Strigoil, who officiated at the coronation of Henry II. [The king had reccommended Henry Percy to the office of marshal in the 1377 coronation, and so Countess Margaret’s plans were thwarted.]

Letter of Richard e. Arundel to his steward, John Boerlie:

Richard e. Arundel and Surrey to John Boerlie, steward of our lordship of Church Stretton, greetings. For which we have heard that certain lands and tenements have come into our hands by your escheats in the towns of Alvestretton and within our manor of Stretton by the forfeiture of one Alice Huches, lately wife of Nicholas Sprenghose, whose lands and tenements our dear and well‐loved clerk William hardewick, lately our steward of the said manor, whom God save, granted to a Richard Bondelers of Alvestretton for a twenty mark fine which was paid to us. As such we wish and order you that the said Richard should be put in full [lease?] by the grant enrolled in our court of Stretton and for him and his heirs to hold from us and our heirs, according to the custom of ours said manor by the services and customs due ... [?] knowing for all times the right of each which we would not claim in time to come. And these are our letters of guranatee to you...

Written at Castle Philippa [Shrawardine] 12 December 1392. m.4.

Another letter from Arundel to John Boerlie.

He has heard that he has suffered grat damage from various beasts and savages etc. being in his forest of Longemounde, which his tenants of Stretton and others have accroached and taken as their purpasture because no ordinance has been issued concerning it yet. Boerlie is charged to make an ordinance to the effect that all the earl’s tenants and any others who claim common in the said forest should [brand or mark?] their beasts pasturing there. So that each village should have a list so that they will know which beasts are theirs. And he is to make sure that the earl should have what belongs to him in this matter, without default, so that he should not in future be damaged.
