Greetings Everyone,

How wonderful to welcome another season of spring! Watching the flowers pop- ping up and the buds on the trees, I am reminded of a small flower called the “mayflower,” a pretty small pink flower which is the symbol of our Mayflower so- ciety and also the state flower of Massachusetts. Because the flower is pink, that is why pink is a color used for Mayflower items. Please see the front page of the newsletter for a picture of this flower.

With the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower sailing in 2020, we are striving to educate our commu- nity about the significance of this event. To do that the Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants has registered at several genealogy programs. If you can help to promote our society by sharing the Pilgrim story by sitting at a table at one of these 2019 upcoming events on April 13, June 15, July 19 or July 20, please let me know.

Speaking of the 400th anniversary, you just might be interested in being in Plymouth in September 2020 to attend the Mayflower Congress. The national society has created a website, www.GSMD2020.org which will share information with members concerning that event. This website will go live in April 2019. If you are interested, please let me know so that you can become a delegate and participate as a voting member at Congress. Indiana is eligible to have several voting delegates.

To bring you up to date on the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants is now the sole owner of the meetinghouse. This be- came possible through donations by members. Indiana members gave $2,000 to help in this process. A BIG thank you to all of you who gave to this worthwhile project.

Please note that we have a couple of vacancies on the board as “members at large.” There are only two board meetings a year, one in the spring and one in the fall. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the society and even make a new friend! Please email me if interested.

We have a wonderful program planned for our Spring luncheon. Have you ever wondered when walk- ing through a cemetery why there are symbols on a gravestone and what they mean? Come hear our speaker Jeannie Regan-Dinius share her knowledge of these markings and their meanings on Satur- day, April 28 at the Woodstock Club. This program was suggested by one of our members. If you know of an interesting speaker to recommend, please email me.

Finally, if you are not yet receiving our newsletter by email and would enjoy seeing it in color, please email me and I will add your email to our list. The newsletter is published twice a year, spring and fall.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming spring luncheon,

Linda McGlothlin Governor, Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants [email protected]. Page 3

Update on the Indiana Mayflower Database & Death Certificates/information Project

Due to the high volume of applicants interested in becoming members, this project has been put on the back burner, but not forgotten. I may have a volunteer to help with data entry as soon as her application is approved. I have reviewed every application 1-1576 and added them to the Excel file. I have searched for death certificates, find a grave, death indexes, and social security death information for member 1-800. Laura Smith, Historian Page 5

Historian’s Report (continued)

What are your plans for May 1-2, 2020?

The Ohio Society of Mayflower Descend- ants is celebrating the 400th anniversary with an event on May 1-2 in Columbus, Ohio. They will feature speaker Josh Taylor from Genealogy Roadshow who will discuss Mayflower related topics. He is a wonder- ful speaker! More information to follow.

GSMD offers Short Form Application  As of 15 February 2019, a short form exists that lists only the names of the first four generations IF all of the birth, death, and marriage information on the first four generations are in the Mayflower silver books, MFIP pink books or the of the Mayflower series.  This is meant to streamline the early generations and will result in 10% less typing on each application for the historian.  The new form also has the birth date of the applicant on the first page and a new “certificate to read” line to note if the applicant would like their certificate to read differently from the standard.  The old form can still be used so that in the in-process applications do not have to be redone.  Instead of using a large folded sheet (17x14) to print applications, the GSMD has recommended single-sided 8.5x14 (legal) sized sheets.

Greetings Pilgrim Cousins! January 1, 2020 is descending rapidly upon us. I was so happy when I announced at Congress in Plymouth that we in California planned to enter a float in the Rose Parade. The CALIFORNIA SOCETY went to work immediately in 2017, and spent 2018 establishing relationships with the Tournament of Roses® (TOR), meeting with float designers, and studying accurate information regarding pilgrim clothing. We determined that we needed to present this float as an entry from the General Society, as well as a grassroots effort without financial sponsorship from outside. The TOR doesn’t accept just any organization into the parade. With the help of former Governor Lea Filson, Governor General George Garmany, and Bob Dempster chair of the CA 2020 committee, we got permission to enter the float under the name of our General Society of Mayflower Descendants, with the heavy lifting to be done by the California Society. This is an opportunity to tell our story and attract new members. Details about decorating opportunities are on Facebook and our webpage. We encourage you to join in this endeavor. Please consider a donation to support us financially which will enable us to thoroughly express our ancestors ‘voyage of hope with the very BEST float and this is OUR float. It is our responsibility to tell the story! Although fundraising will continue throughout the year, early commitments will allow the committee to make decisions that will im- pact the project. Go to www.camayflower.org or https://www.gofundme.com/gsmd-2020-rose-parade-float- fun For more information. You may also send a check to State Treasurer, David Lawrence Grinnell, 3501 Desert Creek Trail, Palm Springs, CA 92262. It’s easy! And tax deductible. Please note that funds received in excess of the float expenses, will go to the Plymouth Meeting House fund project. Visit us in Southern Cal- ifornia to help decorate the float, attend the parade, and party with pilgrim cousins around the country! We promise to make it fun for you and your families. Best regards, Marcia Huntley Maloney, Governor California Society [Letter condensed from original, edi- tor]

Did you know? . . . . The Pilgrims in the 1600s used the Julian Calendar. Ever since 1752, we (the American Colonies) have used the Gregorian Calendar. The reason we switched to the Gregorian calendar was because the Julian calendar slightly miscalculated the exact length of a year by eleven minutes and fourteen seconds. During the 1500s and 1600s, the calendar was off by ten days. Hence, when we look back in time with our Gregorian calendar, we find that the Pilgrim's calendar was ten days behind. So what was September 6 by the Pilgrim's calendar is September 16 by our calendar. By 1752 the calendar had become 11 days off. So the British Parliament, to fix the problem, declared the adoption of the Gregorian calendar, and renamed September 3, 1752 to September 14, 1752 to fix the eleven-day disparity. The Parliament also declared that New Years would fall on January 1, instead of March 25. This "New Years" discrepancy is the reason why some dates have been double-dated and look like March 5, 1621/2. This means it was 1621 to them because their New Years had not yet occurred, but it is 1622 to us because our New Years falls on January 1, not March 25.

[FYI: George Washington, for example, was born on February 11, 1731 under the Julian Calendar, but afterwards recognized the date February 22, 1732 to reflect the Gregorian Calendar.] For more information (or total confusion about dates), check out this website: http://libguides.ctstatelibrary.org/hg/colonialresearch/ar ] Page 9

The Story of the Pilgrims Hello! All your hard work preparing for national 2020 celebrations will soon be on full dis- play! It's an exciting time for all of us as we acknowledge and commemorate how are nation came to be.

For the past year or so, THE STORY OF THE PILGRIMS coloring book has been available on the GSMD Mayflower Online Shop. In addition, I have been chatting with one of your col- leagues in California about the possibility of using this book as a supplement to the school visits he makes in his area every fall. The dream is to be able to purchase a bulk quantity at low cost and provide a book to every third grader in his colony and, potentially, the state.
