Although hotel and real estate investors ignore or despise the peasant families who still persevere in farming amidst this worldwide-known tourist hotspot, the Balearic Autonomous Government has recently started a pay-for-ecosystem-services scheme based on the tourist eco-tax collection that offers grants to farmers that keep the Majorcan cultural landscapes alive, while a growing number of them have turned organic. How has this peasant heritage survived within such a global tourist capitalist economy? We answer this question by explaining the socio-ecological transition experienced from the failure of agrarian capitalism in the island, and the ensuing peasantization process during the first half of the 20th century through a local banking-driven and market-oriented land reform.

This is the case of Calvià. The thesis aims to evaluate the commitment of the municipality to the environment and whether it is heading to the best possible scenario or not. In this work, the political action of the municipality is studied by doing a case study using quantitative and qualitative methodologies in the territorial planning, transport, energy, water and waste management of Calvià and its successes and failures are assessed. In addition, an environmental benchmarking is done between Calvià’s initiatives and the ones proposed by the Urban Agenda for the EU and La Palma and Culatra Island which have proved to be committed to the environment. Finally, the proposals that could lead the municipality to improve the current situation and therefore be more sustainable are highlighted. • Welcome to Mallorca Brochure
WELCOME TO MALLORCA ADVICE TO HELP YOU SETTLE ON THIS BEAUTIFUL ISLAND BELIEVE · INSPIRE · CHALLENGE Welcome to Mallorca An International Island Mallorca remains one of the most favoured islands of the Mediterranean for investors, second home buyers, holiday-makers and increasingly those choosing the island as their permanent residence. The high-quality of life on the island is a magnet to young successful international people who have the option to live anywhere in the world but choose Mallorca because of the climate, security, international schools, medical care, infrastructure and easy access to major cities across Europe. Today, Mallorca is more international than ever, with a lively resident multinational community and a vibrant year- round capital that is Palma. No Language Barriers Even though most foreigners living in Mallorca are well aware that learning Spanish makes all the difference, if you speak English or German, you can be sure to find service providers who speak your language. A lot of people who have settled in Mallorca over the years have set up their own businesses to earn a living and are focused on the foreign clientele for business. Climate With 300 days of sunshine every year in Mallorca do we need to say more! Thanks to Mallorca’s geographic location, the winters are mild and summers not too hot. The coldest month is usually January, but then there are only a couple of weeks to go for the almond blossom, turning the island into a sea of rose and white. September and October are beautiful warm days without being too hot and the sunbathing season often lasts well into November.

Inst., Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic ABSTRACT A preliminary study on the existence and behaviour of saline water in S' Albufera wetland aquifer system is presented. The wetland is currently a 1200 ha Natural Park in which groundwater contribution is essential to its existence. The goal of the study is to know groundwater conditions and the possible impact of present and future groundwater exploitation in the tributary basin. The work comprises preliminary chemical and environmental isotope analyses, water electrical and temperature logging, as well as the provisional interpretation of some previous work and of some deep boreholes drilled early in the 70's. The area is geologically and hydrogeologically complex due to extensive tectonic effects and a series of sea transgre~sions and regressions, with build up of reef and dune belts. Saline groundwater extends far inland, further than the Natural Park boundaries. Diffusion from deep saline water and the effect of local sea spray and airborne salinity explain the existence of slightly brackish shallow groundwater in the surroundings.

Island Studies Journal, Vol. 12, No. 1, pp. 243-254 Toponymy and nissology: an approach to defining the Balearic Islands’ geographical and cultural character Antoni Ordinas Garau Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] and Jaume Binimelis Sebastián Universitat de les Illes Balears, Spain [email protected] ABSTRACT: The cultural identity of each of the larger islands that make up the Balearic archipelago is shown through the local geographical terminology and toponymy, which are results of the successive overlapping of languages and cultures brought to the islands by various peoples throughout history. By classifying and analyzing the toponymy and geographical terminology of the Balearic Islands, unique particularities can be found. There are differences between each of the islands, as well as with non-island territory, as a result of centuries of isolation. This same isolation has also led to the preservation of terminology and other linguistic aspects, and has created an endemic culture. The results of the records of terminology that contribute to the geographical and cultural characterization of the Balearic Islands are presented along with some keys to understanding the islands’ idiosyncrasies. https://doi.org/10.24043/isj.15 Keywords: Balearic Islands, cultural identity, ethnography, geographical terminology, nissology, toponymy Nissology, geography, and toponymy Despite the course of action begun by Moles (1982) and the opinion of McCall (1996) that the new millennium would be the one of island sciences, to Espínola & Cravidao (2014) who highlighted the contribution of geography to their expertise, nissology1, or islandology, undoubtedly has a promising future. This is true not only because the world is full of islands (Baldacchino, 2006), but because of the valuable role that they play when considering any of the three lines of research suggested by King (2010).
