4 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It gives me great pleasure to present my first report as President of the SANFL Umpires' Association.

The beginning of 2016 brought significant changes to the management of the SANFLUA Executive with a new President and Treasurer. Changes always bring challenges but the committee performed cohesively and enthusiastically to produce successful results and a successful year for the Association.

I viewed 2016 as a year to review the SANFLUA’s direction and to review the perception our members have of the Association. We conducted a membership experience during the course of the season and it became evident very quickly about what direction our members want us to take and what issues they want addressed. So stay tuned in 2017 as we work through the results of this survey more closely.

Further to this, change and progress will not occur unless we have the numbers behind us to do so. People power is extremely important, so climb on board and continue to be a member and encourage other people to do the same.

A strong financial backing allowed the Executive to continue to subsidize social functions considerably during the season. These included a Wine Tour to McLaren Vale, Ten Pin Bowling Night, Movie Dinner Night and After Match Drinks at the Cathedral Hotel. A big congratulation must go to Christopher Cook for planning a Social Calendar that suits most tastes. These functions were generally well attended.

Our Web Development and Communications portfolio continued to increase our presence via our social media platforms (Facebook, website and email) and develop and maintain our membership databases. You may have noticed the weekly umpiring appointments on our website? … They also manage the flow of emails that are received at our [email protected] email and distribute and respond to them as necessary. James &

5 Hugh Merrett have done a fantastic job during their tenure on the SANFLUA committee, greatly developing their respective portfolios but unfortunately will be lost to umpiring this season and I wish them the best in their endeavors after completing their university degrees.

It is commonly known around SANFL umpiring circles that Steven Rypp could sell ice to the Eskimo’s and the Sponsorship Portfolio was right up his alley. He did an outstanding job organizing a great deal with our Pub Sponsor the Cathedral Hotel who provided room hire for free for all our functions and great subsidies for these events. He also did outstanding work organizing sponsors and donors for prizes at our Quiz Night. Steven got engaged late last year and with his increasing work load as a Councilor on the City of West Torrens Council and work with the State Liberal Party, Steven has stepped away from umpiring in 2017 and I also wish him the best in the future and we all thank him for his efforts running this portfolio.

Craig Trewartha stepped aside from the role of Treasurer, a role he had held for the previous 5 years to assume the role of life membership representative. A vital role to keep those not actively involved in the activities of the Association up to date with news and up and coming social events. Many Thanks, Craig!

In 2016, the SANFLUA moved into a more digital world for our accounting practices transferring our financials into accounting software and doing away with spreadsheets and also changing our operating bank account so we could do away with the chequebook. This could not have been done without the enthusiasm and technical expertise of our treasurer Sean Burton. He has been a valuable addition to the SANFLUA Executive. The results from his hard work speak for themselves, which you will see in his Treasurer’s report later on.

Special mention must be given to Secretary, Andrew Crosby. He’s commitment on field and on the track flows to his activities and duties within the SANFLUA. He did an outstanding job preparing many aspects of the Annual Dinner that made it the success it was amongst assisting with the general running of the Association during the season, so thank you Andrew.

- - - - -

For the second year in a row, the Annual Dinner returned to the Ian McLachlan Room at Adelaide Oval with rave reviews. Many things contribute to the success of holding our dinner at the Oval, including location, scenery; not to mention the food and service. We have

6 managed to negotiate significant discounts this coming season which, being our 70th, will be able to let us celebrate a significant milestone in style.

- - - - -

It would be prudent of me not to acknowledge the South Australian representation at the National Level … even if they are now Ex Pats.

Field Boundary Goal Chris Bull Steve Axon Sean Burton Brodie Kenny-Bell Justin Schmitt Jonathan Creasey Peter Challen Matthew Konetschka Daniel Hoskin Jason Moore Michael Palm Dillon Tee Shane Thiele Mark Thomson Darren Wilson Corey Watkins Congratulations must also go to for finally being rewarded for many years of long jeopardy, and being elevated to the AFL List in 2017. All the best on the move to Melbourne Leigh and we look forward to seeing you progress and rise through the AFL ranks.

To those who umpired grand finals and represented us at the Sate Match between SA and Victoria, well done. You performed admirably and thoroughly deserved your appointments.

With the season rapidly approaching, I would like to wish you happy umpiring and every success for the up and coming season. You will only get out of it what you put in. I look forward to catching up with you all throughout the season whether it be on the track, at a match or at a social function.

Regards,

Matthew Norton

7 SECRETARY'S REPORT

Dear Members,

Season 2016 saw the SANFL Umpires’ Association experience yet another successful year. After the retirement of Tony Dey, Mr. Matthew Norton was voted in as incoming President, and his friendly, approachable and professional nature have been a welcome addition. He ensured that our monthly committee meetings were productive and enjoyable, and it has been a great pleasure working closely with Matthew, and all the current committee members. We also had a changing of the guards in the number-crunching department, with Sean ‘PJ’ Burton taking over from Craig Trewartha as SANFLUA Treasurer. I would personally like to thank Craig for his efforts in this demanding role over the past few years.

Social events were again well attended, and I would like to acknowledge the tireless work that Chris Cook has put in over the year for these events to happen. A large part of why the SANFLUA committee exists is to create an avenue for umpires from all disciplines to socialize, co-exist and embrace the umpiring culture that has been paved by those before us. I believe it is important that all members make a genuine effort to attend these events where possible. This is especially true for the ‘senior’ members of our group who are in a position to set an example for our newer members.

Our website has been a huge success, with many visitors heading to our page. A great deal of traffic was diverted our way due to the SANFLUA’s social media updates, largely via our Facebook site. There were many ‘good news’ stories posted throughout the year, including milestone games, births, event photos, match appointments etc., as well as the acknowledgment of the passing of our valued life members. Membership details were able to once again be collected electronically when signing up. It is important that any change of contact details are passed on to the committee so that we can ensure the accuracy of our records. A great deal of thanks must go to Hugh and James Merrett for their invaluable work with the electronic media portfolio.

As per last year, I certainly believe the pinnacle of the season for the association was the Annual Dinner, held at the magnificent Adelaide Oval. To be able to socialize with fellow umpires, young and old, while overlooking the most beautiful oval in the world is something we should not take for granted. It was fantastic to also

8 see many tables with a mixture of past and present umpires happily chatting away and discussing the one thing that we all have in common…umpiring. The highlight of the evening is always the Life Membership presentation, and after many years of service and support of the SANFLUA, I was delighted to be able to personally bestow James Ralston with this honor.

Although it seems like a lifetime ago, I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all Grand Final umpires, in all disciplines in 2016. We certainly did not harm our reputation in the public eye as a very professional, committed and hard- working group of young men and women. I hope that those that missed out on the final game of the year can strive to go one better in season 2017.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard-working committee of 2016. Each and every member has volunteered their time to this group because they love umpiring in this state and want to see the SANFLUA flourish. I can assure you that there are some exciting plans in the pipeline, so I would urge any member to seriously considering jumping on board as a SANFLUA committee member, you will find it extremely rewarding and a lot of fun.

All the very best for Season 2017!

ANDREW CROSBY

9 SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT

The SANFLUA Social Secretary was ecstatic to have Mr. Matthew Norton elected as president for 2016. Following Matthew’s election, it was no surprise that our first social event for 2016 was a wine tour to the McLaren Vale wine region. It was a pleasure organizing the event with our President, come bus driver and with his fine knowledge of wine and the region the day was a great success. The bus departed Mackinnon Parade at 10:00 am, and then collected the remaining members from the southern suburbs, proceeding to a great day out. The array of artistic labels and range of wines at Alpha Box and Dice and Maxwell Wines was enjoyed at our first stop. Lunch was provided by the committee at the scenic Wirra Wirra Wines and the tour then concluded at the lovely Shottesbrooke Vineyards. The feedback from the 25 members involved was that the day was a great success. We can definitely see this event taking a regular position in the future.

Thanks to Steven Rypp (Sponsorship), SANFLUA was able to team up the Cathedral Hotel in 2016. The Cathedral proved to be a venue with great ambiance for our Cathedral Catch ups throughout the year. Further to being a great venue, partial spending was put toward our Grand Final Party, making that decent an even better night for the association. Cathedral Catch- ups were well attended and were held on May 14, June 4 and September 3. The nights were a great way to discuss the day’s games, milestones, let off some steam or to spend the night socializing. A big thank you for the Cathedral Hotel for supporting SANFLUA in 2016, we enjoyed the drinks, food, venue and lovely service throughout the year.

The SANFLUA Movie Dinner Night on July 2 was once again one of the most popular social events. For $20 members received a garlic bread and main meal at the Caledonian along with a movie ticket to the Piccadilly Cinema, valid long after the night. The association subsidized over a third of costs and with the relaxed atmosphere, it is no surprise we again sold over 35 tickets.

On July 23, the SANLFUA bowling night moved to King Pin Norwood. The night was a great success with SANFLUA members, partners and family filling several lanes. SANFLUA subsidized about half the night, allowing members to have ample finger food and two games of bowling for only $20. Participants’ bowling skills varied greatly on the evening and it’s fair to say for some, our umpiring is much more consistent than our bowling. While some bowled it over, others struggled a little more but that

10 became irrelevant, as the most important thing was the camaraderie everyone shared on the night.

A huge effort by a number of SANFLUA committee members brought the 2016 ‘Big Quiz’ together. Held in the Magarey room at Football Park on Friday August 6, this was again the biggest social night of the year. Steven Rypp put in some amazing work sourcing some brilliant items for quiz, game and raffle prizes. The well-formed questions by Matthew Norton along with the company and prizes brought the whole night together. A big thank you goes out to all the sponsors, including the Checkside Tavern who donated the room for the evening. It was great to see a number of members bring family and friends, resulting in almost 100 people attending the night. When nights like are supported by members it greatly supports the association and this year was no exception with over $3,000 being raised for the association.

11 SPONSORSHIP REPORT

2016 has been quite a successful year for the SANFLUA in many areas and I have continued to enjoy serving our members by running the Sponsorship portfolio on the committee.

I am most grateful to our Major Sponsors and Minor Donors for assisting the SANFLUA in 2016.

Thank you to the many other individuals that supported the SANFLUA as well with smaller prize donations for events as every bit has helped this year.

13 WEB DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNICATIONS REPORT

The Association continued to improve all areas of its communication network to deliver high quality and regular updates to all members through our various platforms including webpage, email and social media.

This year saw the release of our online membership renewal system. In a streamlined process, existing members could log into a secure portal to manage their membership subscription, review and update contact information. For the first time, members could forgo the pen and paper, saving time and improving administrative efficiency.

Since launching the new website in February 2015 we have had over 24,800 visitors to the site. This is a tremendous achievement in such a short period, highlighting the importance and significance of this communication portal to our members and the broader community. The website continued to provide a home for regular news articles, updates and event information. Social media platforms were important in attracting viewers to the website and promoting social events throughout the year. In addition, members were kept more connected with the implementation of email newsletter updates provided on a regular basis.

Throughout our tenure, we have established a solid and reliable communication platform. There is the potential to expand the existing capabilities to bring increased benefits to members in the future.

Regards,

Hugh Merrett James Merrett Web Development Communications

14 TREASURER’S REPORT

2016 saw a year of change throughout the SANFLUA with a new President and Treasurer coming on board for the 2016 year. These changes allowed for the SANFLUA to go more digital throughout the 2016 year with improvements to the SANFLUA website and social media posts and also the introduction of an online accounting system through XERO.

2016 again was a successful year for SANFLUA financially with a surplus for the year of $2,773. The SANFLUA currently has a strong financial position with $14,500 currently being held on term deposit with the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank on a 12 month term and returning 2.6% annually. Our cash account with People’s Choice Credit Union also has a balance of $14,375. This gave rise to net assets of SANFLUA $28,836 as at 31 October 2016.

The increase in the surplus for 2016 was driven by the success of the Big Quiz event held in August. The success of this event could not have been attained without the support of our sponsors and hard work completed by the Committee, in particular Chris Cook.

However membership numbers were down compared to the 2015 year which resulted in membership subscription revenue being $12,287 compared $13,927. The main source of revenue of SANFLUA is driven by member numbers and therefore the continued profitability of SANFLUA and number of events held on the social calendar is contingent on continuing to increase our member base including junior umpires.

The annual dinner was once again held at Adelaide Oval and was a night enjoyed by all members, new and old. Once again there was no guest speaker in 2016 which allowed more time for mingling and reminiscing on old umpiring war stories. I would like to thank Steven Murphy for his giving up his time and completing the role of MC for the night.

Year 2017 looks to be another exciting year for SANFLUA members with further changes to the social calendar enticing members to see their value for money from their membership.

I would like to thank the Committee members for all of their work undertaken during the 2016 year and would also like to thank our Auditors for the ongoing support also.

Regards, Sean Burton
