DR. HENRY KING STANFORD

With a balanced combination of scholarly ability and energetic friendliness, Dr. Stanford has created on campus an atmosphere singularly his own. W e see in his work, both on campus and throughout the state, his experienced ability as an administrator. Of greater value to us, however, is his exuberant personality. His concern for us as individuals has gained for him our allegiance. Our respect for his ability and our appreciation of his service combine to give us a lasting pride in our president.

^cfihctncfe ClaAA Happy-go-lucky Sophs . . . That was us! Sophomore year, our Musical Merry-go-round won the coveted Golden Slipper. Confident in our Irish luck, we tackled other problems with the same gay spirits. We somehow survived History 210, Humanities, and English 206. We mastered the mambo in social dancing class and took up bridge and Scrabble as extra curricular activities. We learned to study without formal study hall, and found out that labs sometimes run more than their required two hours. Now we’re at the half-way point and are beginning to show the influence of two years of constant exposure to knowledge and the society of other people.

College Government Association, the governing body of GSCW, is composed of faculty advisors and students who work together to create an organ ization which helps to develop the initiative, re sponsibility, and self-discipline of each person. Through CGA and its four divisions a democratic form of campus government is maintained. Student Council recommends new rules and regu lations to the Faculty Committee on Student Rela tions. Recommendations made by the students are discussed in Student Council and presented at a student body meeting. The Student Council super vises, in a general way, the work of Honor Council, Judiciary, and Board of House Presidents; hears reports; makes suggestions, and takes responsi bility for seeing that the system operates efficiently. Jan Anderson is President of CGA and Miss Gloria Vicedomini is the advisor.

Jan and Miss Vicedomini. STUDENT COUNCIL -— ------9

The responsibilities of Judiciary include supervising the dormitory councils, considering all recom mendations of changes in campus regulations, and assuming respon sibility for effective operation of campus activities. Judiciary also has the specific duty of interpret ing the rules of CGA. Louise Powell is Chairman of Judiciary. Dr. James Bonner and Dr. Helen Greene are the advisors.

One of the most important phases o f H o n o r Council’s work is that of acquainting the new students w ith ou r honor system. To keep the students aware of a function ing honor system throughout the year, Honor Council pre sents an assembly program and publishes an article in the Colonnade each quarter. Honor Council always strives to emphasize the responsibil ities and privileges which ac company self-government.

121 Retreat

The jostling bus ride to Lake Laurel, the arrival, the work begins . . .

A charming meeting place— if you don’t get seasick!

A new year— another Fall Retreat. Lake Laurel is the setting; evaluation and reconstruction the action. Officers of College Government Association, the Recreation Association, and Young Women’s Christian Association unite in planning a program of more effective service for G.S.C.W.’s students.

Between meetings there is time for much fun— cards, caroms, cokes, boat ing, and maybe even a hike around the Lake. Of course there are some who spend their free time catching up on past summer’s events or just chatting.

In discussions many subjects are pre sented that make us think. Old sparks of animation are rekindled, and both individuals and organizations are chal lenged to higher goals for the new year.

‘Flappy days are here again.’

The upperclassmen and Y ’s Big Sisters eag erly awaited the arrival of the new Red and White class. Then . . . the freshmen came, and some of the plans that had been made at re treat could be enacted. A schedule filled with handbook classes, health exams, parties, and inevitable entrance exams began. 1

and Orientation Week

“ So this is how the freshmen get to first period classes on time!”

“ To pass or not to pass . . .”

“Mirror, mirror, on the wall . . .”

The busy week climaxed in a recep tion and tour at the Mansion and open house in Terrell for the G.M.C. boys. W ith less than one day to recuperate, the tired frosh prepared to meet the de mands of regular class routine the next week, and much to their surprise, they found it easier! Food and fun along the way. ‘Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine.'

Annual Hike

“Frosh and juniors stand united . . Keeler, the Killer

. 11 - ' I A warm, clear day in early October, that constant glancing at watches during class, and a hastily-eaten I dinner all forecast a big afternoon at Bonner P a rk - Annual Hike. There was a terrific clash of colors as purple and lavender and green and white vied with red, black, and white, but there was a grand unity in fun and

‘ sportsmanship. Upon arrival food sacks were opened, old Golden Slipper songs re-sung, and the big event began . . . the faculty-senior softball game. The fac ulty was victorious in spite of the noble Royal Class’ appearing 100 per cent in the field in the seventh inning.

The barbecue was better than ever— particularly to those at the end of the line! By the light of two huge bonfires the dormitories presented their skits. Bell Hall took first place, and Ennis came in second with her “Grand Old Crew.” It was a wonderful day— delightfully different from classroom monotony and distinctly singular from any other big day on the G.S.C.W. calendar.

“ AH the beasts of the field play.”

Sports Day heads the Jessie sports calendar. This event brings Snag Week to a close in a grand climax of enthusiasm and sportsman ship. Everyone comes to breakfast dressed in shorts or jeans of her dormitory colors. The day gets under way with a rousing pep meet ing on the tennis courts, and this pep prevails throughout the day. Each dormitory enters a team in softball, volleyball, tennis, ping pong, horseshoes, and shuffleboard.

Softball, tennis, hike . . . what’s next on the agenda?

The competition of the day is a good test of skill and sportsmanship. Although Bell, Terrell, and Beeson were in there fighting, the Royalty from Ennis took home the cup with Terrell taking a close second.

Hail the conquering heroines!

Sportsmanship — the prize we seek.

Tense is the moment. Got you cornered.

Intramurals play a vital part in our program. Fall Quarter brings volleyball into season, and in the afternoons our front campus is the scene of many a spirited game. This year the freshmen won the tournament with a close victory over the sophomores.

Winter Quarter you’re sure to find everybody heading for the gym with basketball the drawing card. Spirit prevails throughout the quarter as everyone turns out to cheer her team.

With Spring, softball comes into the spotlight. Many a close play at the plate has brought the spectators to their feet, only to hear the umpire yell, “You’re out!”

The next destined post home with joy. Lake Laurel, our week-end refuge. Vice on the point.

The take

“ Anglers boast of the innocence of their pastime.”

Could any Jessie ever forget the week ends at Lake Laurel? Bridge, bull ses sions, food, swimming, boating . . . and the game of spoons always won by Miss Chapin. For the brave there’s the game of “king on the raft”— only those will ing to take a ducking can play. Best of all is singing around the fire as the day ends.

No, none of us could ever forget . . .

The question in every freshman’s mind the first month of school . . . “ Is tomorrow the D ay?” Rat Day, an unforgettable ordeal . . . the sleep less night before; daybreak and the juniors; the floors mopped; the piles of shoes shined . . . and the party bringing the day to a close. But from this day on, the juniors are known as “our Big Sisters.”

There is a place of warm gratitude in our hearts for the many persons and business establishments that have made publication of this book possible. We realize the inconvenience that picture schedules have caused both faculty and students, and to you we extend our sincere appreciation. To Dr. Smith who helped us with picture-making and to Pat Hoi mes and Mr. Meyer whose assistance in the business section has made the going easier, we say, “Thank you.”

Our advertisers and staff have been invaluable. The ads contributed greatly to the financing of

our publication, and the staff has given freely of time and ability.

Our advisors, Dr. Dawson and Izzie, have always been ready with support and encouragement.

To Southern Photo Process Engraving Company we owe our gratitude for their cooperation and interest. Mr. Johnny Long and Mrs. Bodeker of Bowen, Long and Young have kept in constant con tact with us and have offered valuable suggestions and advice. We appreciate the time they have

given us.

The files of the Public Relations office have been open to us through the generosity of Mr. Cheek. By our hands, he has been relieved of flash bulbs, film and camera. Surely no one has been more

helpful than he.

To Mr. Ware who has given so freely of his time and energy, we cannot give adequate apprecia

tion. His untiring efforts to perfect setting, lighting, and pose of every shot have produced some inter

esting photographs for our book.

Mr. Specht has displayed a loyalty above and beyond the call of duty. His camera has caught

those many events that come but once, and he has been ever-ready to leave important work to help us.

Without his willing assistance much of this book would not have been included.

It has been a memorable pleasure to work with all of these people in producing the 1955 Spec

trum.
