HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR STAFF

William Lawrence Camp is located in a rural area of . Our campus comprises over 250 acres of mostly woodlands. We are on a small freshwater lake called Lower Beech Pond on which our activities take place. The camp is located in the town of Tuftonboro.

This general area of New Hampshire is known as the Lakes Region. It is an area of many lakes and mountains. We think that you will find the countryside quite spectacular. Our neighboring town of Wolfeboro is located about a 15-minute drive from Tuftonboro. Wolfeboro is truly a summer resort community. Wolfeboro is home to a small community hospital, hotels and inns, banks, post offices, gas stations, grocery stores, video rental stores, a library, restaurants, several pharmacies, boat yards, gift shops and more. Wolfeboro’s Main Street is located along the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee where there is much boat traffic. A large tourist boat known as the ‘Mt. Washington’ stops in Wolfeboro twice daily to take people on tours of the ‘Big Lake’.

Wolfeboro is where we do our basic camp business (e.g. banking, pharmacies, a hospital) and where you may choose to spend your time off. We offer transportation to Wolfeboro for time off. For more cost- effective shopping and for bigger-ticket items, we must travel at least 45 minutes from camp to Laconia or North Conway to find the nearest department stores.

There is much to see and do in New Hampshire if you enjoy the great outdoors. The White Mountains are the back door to William Lawrence Camp and about a 45-minute drive away. The seacoast of New Hampshire and Maine are less than two hours away. The nearest city of interest is Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It is a seacoast town an hour’s drive away. , MA is a 2.5hour drive away.

Our climate: In June the mornings and early evenings are usually around 50 F. Daytime temperatures with the sun can range from 70 and 80 F. Nighttime temps can drop to 40 F. In July and August, mornings and evenings are usually around 60 F. Days are usually 80 to 90 F. Rain and wind can cause the temperatures to drop and make it feel like it’s in the 30’s. It is not uncommon for this region to have extreme heat waves where, for several days, daytime temperatures can soar to over 90 and often break 100 F with the nights not dropping below 80 F. These days are generally accompanied by high humidity. Such conditions often lead to violent thunderstorms.

You should bring clothes for a wide range of weather conditions. Good raingear can be particularly important.

TRAVEL TO CAMP (if not by car)

Most of the staff will be arriving on either June 6th or 19th. Those arriving early will be coming to attend certification courses offered. Staff training begins on June 20th. Staff traveling to camp via public transportation will be arriving either by bus to Concord, NH or by plane to Manchester, NH on the 6th and 19th. The camp will provide transportation on these days from Concord and Manchester to camp. Flights should be arranged to arrive in Manchester in the late afternoon. Following the airport pick-up, we will proceed to Concord to meet the 7:45 pm bus. We can expect to be in camp by 9 pm.

Those traveling to camp on dates other than those mentioned and who would like travel assistance must coordinate their travel plans through the camp office. We will ask that travel plans be arranged such that you will arrive in either Manchester, Concord or West Ossipee, NH. No pick-ups will be made in Boston, MA, unless specific arrangements have been made.

EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION DOCUMENTS For the purpose of completing the I-9, staff members should bring the following documents:

 Documents that satisfy either list A or lists B AND C in the LISTS OF ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTS table which accompanies the I-9 form.  Everyone should bring their state or country-issued driver’s license if they have one.  New staff need to bring their original social security card bearing a municipal seal, if they have one.  International staff need to be sure to bring the appropriate visa (J-1) and the DS-2019 along with their passport.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT CERTIFICATE If you are under the age of eighteen, you must come to camp with the parents’ signature form signed by your parents or legal guardians, as well as identification as required for the I-9. The state of New Hampshire requires that the permission letter be secured prior to the start of employment. If you do not bring the waiver form, you will be unable to begin employment.
