Scope and Content of the Collection This collection provides a unique insight not only into the long and laborious research required in writing a book but also shines a light on the business relationship between author and publisher. Included in the collection are reference card files detailing the gathering of source material and the difficulty of categorizing and marshaling the material into useable form; tapes of interviews to both learn and preserve factual data; correspondence setting forth the difficult process of selecting illustrations and obtaining permission to use and reproduce them and occasional hints Joseph E. Garland, Manuscripts and Source Material Collection – A22 – page 4 of the sense of humor required to overcome the road blocks that constantly arise. Numerous copies of drafts of manuscripts, with hand written notes and changes of the author, evidence the ever evolving sequence necessary to achieve a final draft. Joseph E. Garland has provided documents relating to 27 of his published works including a large amount of source material. We have arranged the collection in subject series by the chronological date of original publication of each work, as much as possible, and the correspondence and related items are also in chronological arrangement within each folder. The photographs have been scanned and catalogued. The scanned images are stored digitally and the original photographs and negatives are kept in archival storage.
