From Duplass Brothers Productions, the show was created by Phil Matarese & Mike Luciano. The series is also available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners’ streaming platforms. ANIMALS. focuses on the downtrodden creatures native to Earth’s least-habitable environment: New York City. For its wide-ranging third season, the genre-bending show visits a humanless, post-apocalyptic Big Apple, blending live-action and animated segments along with the show’s usual eclectic casting. It is a wholly unique season of television that has never been done before. Matarese and Luciano executive produce, write and direct all of the episodes, and voice many of the characters on the show.     Media Industries 5.2 (2018) The Fan/Creator Alliance: Social Media, Audience Mandates, and the Rebalancing of Power in Studio–Showrunner Disputes Annemarie Navar-Gill1 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN amngill [AT] umich.edu Abstract Because companies, not writer-producers, are the legally protected “authors” of television shows, when production disputes between series creators and studio/ network suits arise, executives have every right to separate creators from their intellectual property creations. However, legally disempowered series creators can leverage an audience mandate to gain the upper hand in production disputes. Examining two case studies where an audience mandate was involved in overturning a corporate production decision—Rob Thomas’s seven-year quest to make a Veronica Mars movie and Dan Harmon’s firing from and subsequent rehiring to his position as the showrunner of Community—this article explores how the social media ecosystem around television rebalances power in disputes between creators and the corporate entities that produce and distribute their work. Keywords: Audiences, Authorship, Management, Production, Social Media, Television Scripted television shows have always had writers. For the most part, however, until the post-network era, those writers were not “authors.” As Catherine Fisk and Miranda Banks have shown in their respective historical accounts of the WGA (Writers Guild of America), television writers have a long history of negotiating the terms of what “authorship” meant in the context of their work, but for most of the medium’s history, the cultural validation afforded to an “author” eluded them.2 This began to change, however, in the 1990s, when the term “showrunner” began to appear in television trade press.3 “Showrunner” is an unofficial title referring to the executive producer and head writer of a television series, who acts in effect as the show’s CEO, overseeing the program’s story development and having final authority in essentially all production decisions.

    Bill’s Guide to Week Two of the 47th Annual Chicago International Film Festival By Bill Stamets Special for Films for Two® My recommended films in Week Two (in “must see” order): 1.) Pina: German director Wim Wenders previously profiled Japanese film director Yasujiro Ozu, Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Cuban musicians. His latest documentary introduces cinefiles to the choreography of German avant-gardist Pina Bausch. In his first use of 3-D cinematography, Wenders evokes the volume of the stage, even for performances staged in non-theatrical settings, including a tramway and an escalator. Four different works are presented. Some are revisited via archival 2-D footage. Seeing various versions adds more figurative depth to our appreciation of Bausch's work than the 3-D adds literal depth to our onscreen perception. Bausch's death during the making of the film may have lent an elegiac note to the laudatory interviews with members of her international company Tanztheater Wuppertal. They do not speak on camera during looking-into-the lens portrait sessions. The soundtrack excerpts their comments, apparently recorded off- camera, to underscore their role as voiceless dancers. Wenders channels Bausch's tactile and theoretical grasp of the body as metaphysical material for art. 2.) The Descendants: Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Election, Citizen Ruth) directs George Clooney as Matt King, an Hawaiian lawyer dealing with his wife hospitalized in a coma and their 10-year-old and 17- year-old daughters. Payne and his co-writers start from Kaui Hart Hemmings' 2008 novel for a truly touching male melodrama, as Clooney's character reconciles his mixed emotions about his wife.

    Journal of Contemporary Rhetoric, Vol. 9, No.3/4, 2019, pp. 112-125. “Redemption Follows Allocution”: Dan Harmon and the #MeToo Apology Ben Wetherbee This article analyzes comedian and TV writer Dan Harmon’s famously well-received #MeToo-era apology for sexual misconduct on the set of his sitcom Community, noting how Harmon revises the traditionally individualistic genre of the apology into a statement of advocacy for the collective moral imperative of the #MeToo movement. After discussing #MeToo as a rhetorical situation that justifiably trivializes pleas for individual forgiveness, the article analyzes Har- mon’s monologue in relation to scholarship on genre of apologia, contrasting Harmon’s with the comparatively indi- vidualistic and unsuccessful apology of Louis C.K and arguing that traditional apologies prove ill-suited to the #Me- Too era. I contend, finally, that male speakers seeking redemption for sexual misconduct should heed Harmon’s ex- ample of sustained critical self-reflection, pronounced advocacy for victims, and sustained cultivation of an ethos that merits redemption.     Netflix’s Big Mouth Big Mouth = Big Topics The first season of Netflix’s new animated show Big Mouth debuted on September 29, 2017 and is very popular among teens and young adults. Boasting an all-star cast and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the cartoon is about middle schoolers going through puberty in the most explicit, perverse, and, at times, depraved way possible. Puberty is indeed a difficult time for all of us, and while the show does bring some good to the discussion, it’s also fraught with problems. What do I need to know about Big Mouth? It’s an adult cartoon based on the real-life experiences that comic writers Nick Kroll and An- drew Goldberg had as kids growing up in New York. They share, in graphic detail, what it was like growing up and going through puberty. As most young men do, Nick and Andrew strug- gled through lust, sexuality, relationships with girls, and the ups and downs of friendship. The show features some of the most popular comedians of our time as the voices, including: John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Kristen Wiig, and Jordan Peele. Although the show is about pre-teens, it is intended for an adult audience. However, Netflix does not effectively limit younger viewers’ access, and undoubtedly, there will be many teens and pre-teens who watch the show. Many of them have lots of questions about sex, and they will be drawn to the show in hopes of finding answers. Unfortunately, due to the content, they are likely to develop some severely warped ideas from watching it.
