San Marcos S. cont. Ridden to perfection by Gary Stevens, Slim Shadey led past every pole to successfully defend his title in this event. Following his victory 12 months back, the dark bay was runner-up to Little Mike (Spanish Steps) in the GI Turf Classic at Churchill May 5 and to Acclamation (Unusual Heat) in the GI Charles Whittingham Memorial H. June 9 ahead of fifth-place efforts in the GI United Nations S. July 7 and in the GI Eddie Read S. July 21. He came off a two-length freshening to wire the field in the GI John Henry Turf Championship over this course and distance, but could do no better than eighth to Little Mike in the GI Breeders= Cup Turf Nov. 3. He had no excuses when only fourth after being loose on the lead in the Dec. 15 GII Hollywood Turf Cup and was most recently a disappointing sixth of seven in the GII San Gabriel S. at this venue Jan. 13. Allowed to drift up to 5-1, Slim Shadey was a bit reluctant to load, but was first out of the stalls and across the dirt to lead passing the stands for the first time. I haven=t had a lot of horses sprint home like he did in the last 30 years going a mile and a quarter, so it was a sweet feeling.@ It was the first stakes win for Stevens since his return to the saddle a handful of weeks ago.
