THE MEL BAR Come relax and wind down after work At the Mel Bar, Millennium House HAPPY HOUR From opening time till 7pm Weekdays 50p off all alcoholic drinks. 3 From the Editor The cover photograph is of the brass plaque from the St. Ive Church War Memorial, bearing the names of the fallen in the two World Wars. (Many thanks to everyone who helped me to obtain a suitable picture!) Anybody with a family member mentioned on the plaque might like to note the item at the bottom of page 22 concerning the Remembrance Day service at the church. Also, anybody with a general or specific interest in war memorials and the people listed therein should take a look at the local History Group website www.pensilvahistorygroup.org. In the “People” section click on War Memorials and you’ll find some background about the people listed on the war memorials and photographs of some of the cemeteries where they are buried. If you have information to add contact Angus Holland (details on page 9). If you enjoy quizzes and want to help to raise funds for local good causes, you may like to note that the proceeds from the next two All Being Well quizzes will be split equally between ABW and Chemotherapy Outreach Services (Bev’s Charity). Details on page 23. All the best - Joe

There have been quite a few planning applications recently that have generated some debate. If you have concerns about any applications coming forward, it is best to take your thoughts to the parish council in the first instance. This is because they are statutory consultees so can speak at the planning committee if a decision is being made there. As I sit on the planning committee, I am required to reserve my decision until the meeting. That doesn’t mean that I’m not taking an interest but it is better for the parish council to be aware of all objections and support and how strong the feeling of the local community is, rather than some coming to me and some to the parish office. There is still some funding left in my community chest but there are quite a few organisations that haven’t returned their completed forms yet. I really would like it all to be spent in the area I represent so please don’t forget about it or miss the deadline. Thank you to everyone who has offered to help in the case of an emergency. We have another meeting of the group working on this booked for the end of the month. After that we should be ready to consider it ready for use and make it publicly available. Those of you who have offered to help will not have your names and contact details made public but we and the emergency services will know how to access them if you are needed. Let’s hope we don’t need to use it any time soon! I am not doing very well at finding business people willing to help us with the Neighbourhood Development Plan. If you are reading this and I haven’t already been in touch with you, do please get in touch. We are not asking for much of your time but your thoughts would really help. As ever, if you need any help with problems related to Cornwall Council, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me. I can’t promise to sort them out but I do promise to try! Thank you.

You can now donate locally in St Johns Church Pensilva. Thursdays 10.00am - 11.15 Dry or tinned food only, please Please note new collection times

7 The Latest from Your Parish Councillor - Martin Corney Things are changing at Millennium House. The youth club want to rent the Cafe in partnership with Merryhue Farm, and the Millennium House Forum should be presenting their plans for change to the Parish Council this month. I still want to open the youth club Cafe every night of the week, and am contacting all potential new volunteers I hear of - we now have several new starters. St Ive Community Park Project raised over £500 at last month’s Fun Day, and community participation was great, with nearly 100 people voting on which equipment to get, even adults were allowed to vote. The housing association which built Ford Close, St Ive Cross sent a representative to last month's council meeting to sound out opinion for expanding the estate in two more phases. Plans can be seen on our Facebook page. I presented the lucky winner of the Neighbourhood Development Plan survey prize draw with a food hamper of local produce from the Farm Shop and the Growing Project Pensilva. So if you didn't get the prize, you didn't win! The NDP survey report is available for inspection in the parish office as well as on the parish website. Don’t forget the parish website st-ive-parishcouncil.gov.uk with council meeting agendas and minutes; also downloadable copies of the Parish Pump. For those of you who do Facebook, our St Ive Parish Council page is still being updated with parish news. Phone me, email me on [email protected] or "martin corney blog st ive" in search engines will find my blogs for you to comment on this article and other gems.

Pensilva W.I. report At the meeting on 10th October, we had our Harvest Festival where lots of produce and other goodies were brought in and auctioned by our very able auctioneer, Ivor. We had a great laugh and also enjoyed a lovely bring and share supper. The Horticultural Show went very well and was attended by many people. The Macmillan Coffee morning held on 27th September raised £206 which was a very good sum of money from the village. On the 8th November we are arranging a coach to go to for Xmas shopping. There are seats available for anyone else to go for £8.50. The coach will leave Pensilva at 10am. Please ring either 363718 or 362531 To book a seat. At our next meeting on 12th November, Yvonne Toms will talk to us about the Bronte family. The competition this month will be a poem.

8 PESILVA HISTORY GROUP

The History Group met at the end of September after a short summer break. Our October and November meetings will be in Millennium House on the last Monday of the month at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

A well attended meeting was entertained to a most interesting illustrated talk by John Manley of the local Trevithick Society entitled “William West and the Mines Around Caradon Hill”. John, who is a local industrial historian and author, has recently published a book titled “William West – The Last Great Cornish Engineer”.

William West had a huge influence on Cornish mining during the Victorian period and had many connections with our local area. John's photographs and illustrations and his detailed history of the great engineer made for a fascinating talk. John has kindly agreed to lead a walk next year around one of our local mines, details will be published nearer the time.

Millennium House Forum – 5th meeting, October 8, 2014 At the October meeting, after the usual formalities, I presented the draft business plan which we had worked on in the Finance Group. It was encouraging to have a total of four Parish Councillors present and to hear their input and reaction to the proposed scheme. At the end of the evening a proposal was approved by the meeting to present the plan to a meeting of Millennium House user groups. At this meeting all the user groups will be asked to consider the Forum’s ideas and, we hope, to approve the plan and give their support in writing. The support of the user groups is vital so that when we come to talk to the Parish Council about our plans, we can show that it has the full backing of the community. Please note that everybody is welcome at the meeting on the 14th. The plan is not written in stone at this stage and the more ideas we receive from the community the better chance we have of coming up with something that will work. On the evening after the October meeting, three members of the Forum visited The Rally Social Club in Lanreath to find out how that is organised and to see whether we can learn anything from how they do things there. No doubt they will report on their findings at the meeting on the 14th, but initial feedback is very Interesting: e.g. the hall is owned by a charitable trust and the bar is run as a members only bar by a separate limited company. Hope to see lots of you at the meeting on the 14th! - Joe Millennium House Forum Presentation of proposed plan for MH:

DOUBLE YOUR MONEY The Growing Project urgently needs more money to continue our work and so we have gone into partnership with Cornwall Community Foundation. This local charity is operating a fabulous Match-Funding donation scheme until Jan 2015 that allows you to grow £10 into £21.55, if you include Gift Aid. To find out more, go to www.localgiving.com /charity/thegrowingproject There are 2 ways of Doubling Your Tenner. Firstly, make a one-off donation of £10, include Gift Aid if you’re eligible and that will give us £21.55, once it’s matched. If enough people do that, we can generate £2,000 of new revenue that way, which will make a tremendous difference to us. All Being Well - Monthly Newsletter Tel: 01579 363890 Thanks to everybody who attended the Quiz on September 27th and to question master Keith. It was a fun evening once again and it raised much- needed funds for the gym. Regular quizzers Raymond and Wendy emerged triumphant, with the help of two friends who happened to be visiting from Barnstable - Mr and Mrs “Ringer”? : ) The Iron Man/Woman challenge in September produced some notable performances of which we will mention just one: long-time member Chris Reeves has had her share of setbacks lately but she showed amazing determination and put in an incredible effort to complete the full Iron Woman distances for the first time. During October we are once again engaged in the battle of the sexes: a bit of light-hearted rivalry between the female and male contingents. It seems to be very close this year! As mentioned elsewhere, proceeds from the November and December quizzes will be shared between All Being Well and the Chemotherapy Outreach Project (http://www.chemooutreachproject.co.uk/), the charity supported by Bev. Keep well.

ST JOHN’S CHURCH PENSILVA

CAFÉ CHURCH For a considerable number of years St John's Church, Pensilva has held a service on Thursday mornings and this has been followed by a time of fellowship over a cup of coffee. As a means of serving the village community more inclusively, we are to try out the idea of combining the service and the coffee into a Café Church type service. It is hoped that this will allow people to bring their concerns and thankfulness into an informal, prayerful situation. Could all those of faith please pray for God's blessing on this endeavour. Café Church will take place in St John's Church at 10 am every Thursday. 33 Funding available for local community projects.
