he highly anticipated Health, Wellness, and Athletics Ex- pansion (HWAE) at Medi- cine Hat College (MHC) is Ttruly a project years in the making. And now thanks to some additional nan- cial support announced in October, this ambitious development is another step closer to becoming a reality. When HWAE is complete, MHC will have seen signicant investments made in enhancing health and wellness facil- ities for its east campus, improved ac- cess to the existing gym facilities, and the development of better space for ad- vanced simulation used in a variety of health sciences programs. In addition, HWAE will have built a beautiful new cultural hub for the college and commu- nity-at-large, with new and appropriate- ly designed spaces wholly dedicated to Indigenous ceremonies, learning, and events. “ is cultural hub is really the high- light of the project and was designed as a drum-shaped, natural, all-wood structure,” says David Cocks, principal architect at Lethbridge-based FWBA Architects and architect on the HWAE project. “A steel compression ring in the middle provides the building’s distinct circular shape, and an open oculus in- stalled in the ceiling will allow addition- al natural light to ow in. e cultural hub’s round form will also be fully ex- pressed from the outside and – clad in natural cedar wood − will be sure to stand out from other buildings in the surrounding campus.” e cultural components of the HWAE project will help to support
