T FIRST, Anita Pastan couldn’t believe that swallowing a capsule A the size of a large vitamin pill could determine if any problems were lurking in hard- to-reach places in her digestive tract. But thanks to the advanced treatments now offered at the comprehensive new Center for Digestive Disease at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, this seemingly science-fiction approach helped doctors find and treat a polyp in her small intestine that otherwise would have been missed. Germantown resident Pastan has Peutz-Jeghers syndrome, an inherited condition in which people lack a protein that inhibits tumors, putting them at risk for polyps (pre-cancerous growths) and cancer. She suffered from numerous gynecological problems over the years, including fibroids and eventually cervical cancer. However, she hasn’t let her condition slow her down. She continues to be a busy woman, splitting her time between her jobs as a realtor and a promotional marketer, and Anita Pastan can enjoy walking her dog again thanks to Dr. Fleisher’s use of video capsule endoscopy, spending time with her three which found a polyp.

INDA HILL THOMAS, a 66-year-old resident of Dundalk, is ‘Mom’ not only to two children, Ltwo step-children and a brood of grandchildren and step- grandchildren, but also to her friends’ children. An avid gardener and crocheter, she also wants to keep up with her husband, who is 13 years younger. However, for many years, severe arthritis and chronic pain in her neck and lower back made that difficult. In the 1990s, Hill Thomas had four of her cervical (neck) vertebrae fused, which she recalls ‘hurt like heck.’ The vertebrae in her lumbar (lower back) spine also shifted out of their proper place, compressing the spinal nerves and causing continuous pain. Despite the surgery, she continued to have pain for many years, only getting relief after seeking treatment from neurosurgeon Louis Chang, MD, in May 2014. Dr. Chang, now a part of the neurosurgical team at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, describes how he treated Hill Thomas: “I first performed an anterior cervical discectomy An innovative back procedure lets Linda Hill Thomas garden with her granddaughter Harlee without pain for the first time in 50 years. and fusion (ACDF) to treat the
