Read at the First Annual Meeting, held March 23rd, 1866.

THE NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE NATURALISTS' FIELD CLUB was established in April, 1865, having for its object the practical study of Natural History in all its branches, and the cultivation of a fuller knowledge of the antiquities in the neighbourhood. Your Committee are now happy to congratulate the Members on the successful termination of the first year of its existence. The want of such a Society seems to have been long felt; and although it may seem somewhat strange to be centred in a district in which almost the Sampleonly plants to be found are fossil ones—where Ornithological treasures are rarce avesCounty indeed ; and wher e the Entomo• logist may search long in vain ; where indeed the very name of the Potteries, with which the Club is associated, sounds forbidding to lovers of nature—still it is hoped that the rich Geological treasures in which this district abounds may prove a most interesting field for research, and will doubtless amply reward the labours of those who make them their study. The surrounding country is unusually rich in Botany as the results of the excursions which were made last year will show. To establish the Club, an inaugural Meeting was conveneStudiesd by Mr. Spanton early in April last year, when Officers were elected and Rules adopted. Your Committee regard it as a matter for congratulation that such a distinguished gentleman as Mr. James Bateman consented to become the first President of the Club. They have to report with regret the resignation of Mr. Garner as Honorary Secretary. During the Summer and Autumn of last year seven excursions were made to the following places :—Biddulph, Dovedale, Congleton and Mow Cop, Trentham, Thor's Cavern and Wetton, Froghall and Cauldon, and to Tutbury and Bolleston. The first excursion was taken early in May to Biddulph, the seat of the President. There were 32 members in the party. After being shown through the beautifully arranged gardens of Biddulph Grange, which are so well known to all in this neighbourhood, the Geological Gallery was visited. In the garden was noticed one interesting nook in which there was almost a complete collection of British Ferns, 17 of which were found within three miles of Biddulph. The pretty little Linnsea Borealis was growing freely. Staffordshire
