HVDC Technology

HVDC  High Voltage Direct Current (HGÜ)  Voltage Source Converter – VSC  Transmission from AC to DC and vice versa AC ~ DC -

DC - AC ~

Why HVDC?

. AC cable transmission links have a maximum distance of ~ 100 km . HVDC avoids the heavy currents required to charge and discharge the cable . For longer distances HVDC cable transmission is the only possible solution . Active and reactive power independently and rapidly controlled . Black start possible

\ 11 NordLink Schematic Converter Station

Area ~ 200m x 200m

12 NordLink

Mass Impregnated Cables

 Why mass impregnated cables? only proven technology for voltage level ≥ 500 kV used for HVDC power cable since 1954 environmental friendly - no liquids or gases are released

 NordLink Facts

rated voltage U0= 525 kV overall cable diameter up to 128 mm  weight in air up to 70 kg/m total cable weight ~ 70.000 t

TenneT Interconnectors

. BritNed cable to the United Kingdom . NorNed cable to Norway . NordLink cable linking Germany to Norway (planned) . COBRA cable linking the Netherlands to (in development) . Interconnector linking Doetinchem in the Netherlands to Wesel in Germany . Increasing capacity planned of the interconnector Meeden (NL) – Diele (GER)

TenneT contributes to the development of an integrated NWE by supporting interconnection countries.
