Chima Onuoha2 1Doctoral Candidate, Department of Management, University of Port Harcourt | Email: [email protected] 2Professor of Management, Department of Management, University of Port Harcourt | Email: [email protected] Abstract: This paper inspects the Impact of Chinese Investment on Trade Development in Nigeria. The engagement among Nigeria and China depends more on economic ties, trade, investment and finance than on political affinity. There has been some evidence that Nigeria had made positive upgrades which have been profoundly appealing to overseas investors, especially the Chinese investors. For this to continue, it was recommended that Nigeria’s priority should be to build up the ability to better its own policies towards China’s engagement and also see China’s engagement gives it an opportunity to expand its trade. Keywords: Nigeria, China, Trade and Investment, Lagos, Kano INTRODUCTION Over the previous decades the volume of exchange between countries of the globe has considerably increased. Especially, Nigeria has seen a sharp ascent in trade and investment with other countries. The relations among Nigeria and the people’s republic of China, which cuts across trade, investment, political aid and military spheres have tremendously grown in recent years (Omoju and Adesanya, 2012). China’s first contact with Nigeria, unofficially, started in the 1950s, precisely 1957. Nigeria’s contact with China was through Egypt.

The initial idea came from Attahiru Bala Usman, who mentioned that people had been asking him where they could get copies of this rare but well known manuscript which was virtually impossible to obtain. It lay on shelves of activists and scholars since its initial launching as a mimeographed document in 1976 but had never been published. Thus we began the journey of reviving the document and getting it into print. First of all, we were not sure of the whereabouts of Dr. Segun Osoba, particularly since General Olusegun Obasanjo had pronounced him dead in his memoirs, My Watch, where he mentioned that both of the authors of the Minority Report were no longer alive. Fortunately we found that Dr. Osoba was very much alive and living in Ijebu Ode.

This newsletter is also my last edition. Once again, I would like to thank you for your responses to my newsletters issued up until now. 【Japan-Nigeria: Diamond Jubilee and Beyond】 As I mentioned in the previous edition, last October marked the 60th independence anniversary of Nigeria as well as the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Nigeria. Since the establishment of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria in 1960, the Embassy has been solely in charge of Nigeria. It was a great pleasure and honour for me to commemorate such a momentous year as Ambassador of Japan to Nigeria. I look forward to further deepening our bilateral relations towards the 70th anniversary and beyond. 【New WTO leader】 On 15 February, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala was selected as the first woman and the first African Director- General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
