1 Parents for Pennington welcomes you to a virtual night in The Secret Garden

The Red and Black Bash is—and always has been—a celebration of our close-knit and supportive Pennington School community. Whether we are gathering in an exotic “secret garden” or forced to remain physically distant from each other until the threat of COVID-19 passes, no obstacle is insurmountable when the goal is a better Pennington School for all of us.

Parents for Pennington began our Bash planning with the long-term goal of improving our on-campus pond. However, in light of recent events, we have shifted our fundraising focus to more immediate needs of our School community. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s Red and Black Bash auction will still sponsor pond restoration as previously planned, but the majority will be redirected to support the Student Assistance Fund and other Parents for Pennington programs that benefit our community as a whole. Our vision of creating a more inviting natural space on campus may not blossom into reality as quickly as we’d hoped, but we are continuing to plant those seeds.

For now, we expect other beautiful things will take root as a result of our decision to move forward with a virtual Red and Black Bash for 2020. Perhaps new friendships will bloom. New ideas may bud as we work together to “unlock the possibilities.” One thing is certain: Our Pennington School community will thrive because we have chosen to bring joy to one another and support the School we love. It will be wonderful to see everyone onscreen, and coming together in person next time will be all the sweeter as a result!

3 A Message from... the PfP President I will remember the Red and Black Bash 2020 for more than just the fact that our lives were turned upside down by the outbreak of Covid-19. We were almost at the finish line with the organization of our only fundraiser. What will be engraved in my memory is the resilience, perseverance, and grit shown by “The Secret Garden” Bash committee during these last few weeks. They all chose to channel their initial disappointment from postponing our live event, which was in the making for months, into jumping right back in. Without skipping a beat, they put in even more hours of relentless work to convert the 2020 Red and Black Bash into an online virtual event. Bravo, ladies and gentlemen! I am incredibly proud of being part of a group of volunteers that stood together till the end. What a way to end my years as a volunteer at The Pennington School. I want to take this opportunity to also recognize all the volunteers I have worked with over the last few years. From the bottom of my heart—a sincere thank you! I will always feel part of this incredible, kind, tight-knit Community. - Marlynne Marlow P’20 President, Parents for Pennington 2019-20 Co-chair, Red and Black Bash 2020 A Message from...

In my first year serving as Eventsthe Coordinator Event for the ParentsCoordinator for Pennington Board, I have had the honor and pleasure of working with many of you. The Pennington School is best known for its warm sense of community and like many of you, it is why our family chose to be here. As co-chair of the Red and Black Bash, I have also been fortunate to work with an amazing group of women who form our auction committee. They have brought their good energy and special talents to make this event happen. Although the Bash has taken a different direction, the focus of celebrating and supporting our Pennington family remains the same. While we can’t always control what happens, we can control our response. I think back to Convocation and Dr. Hawkey speaking of “perseverance and grit,” I see a lot of that in our community. Now more than ever we need to stay connected and support each other. I encourage all of you to join us for the virtual Secret Garden Bash. Just like our children, we are all missing each other, so please join us in celebrating the Pennington School community by attending our Zoom class cocktail parties and virtual Red and Black Bash! - Jacqueline Evans P’22 ’25 ’25 Events Coordinator, Parents for Pennington 2019-20 Co-chair, Red and Black Bash 2020

9 ParentsAcknowledgments for Pennington gratefully acknowledges the efforts of the following contributors to Red and Black Bash 2020:

School administration and the Operations Department Our original plan to hold the Red and Black Bash in the Dining Hall on campus required a great deal of logistical maneuvering, as well as an overall mindset of flexibility and cooperation. Parents for Pennington salutes the many Pennington School administrators and Operations Department staff members who worked with us to make that possible. We are sorry not to be gathering in that beautiful space for our event this year, but we appreciate your enthusiastic support for our plans!

PfP extends a special thanks to Assistant Headmaster of Community Life and Dean of Students Chad Bridges for volunteering to step in as our Master of Ceremonies and Auctioneer. We will always be grateful for his enthusiasm for the Bash and his willingness to help as needed.

Parents and faculty There would be no Red and Black Bash without encouragement and assistance from our entire Pennington School community. We especially appreciate the generous contributions of time, creativity, and skill that each parent and faculty member has shared with us to make Red and Black Bash 2020 a truly exceptional event. Thank you for your participation in all its forms!

Billykirk Billykirk is a purveyor of leather accessories made with the finest materials, uncompromising attention to quality, and a thoughtful eye for design. Thanks to Billykirk’s Chris Bray, Red and Black Bash guests will have an opportunity to purchase exclusive Pennington School-branded Billykirk items. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of these items will benefit The Pennington School, and we are grateful for this thoughtful contribution!

All of our generous donors We are enormously appreciative of all Red and Black Bash donors, sponsors, and advertisers, from current families and alumni to local businesses and friends of the School. Our Pennington community extends well beyond the borders of the campus, and we are grateful to everyone who has chosen to support Parents for Pennington’s annual fundraising event. We encourage everyone associated with the Pennington School family to patronize the businesses that support our School.
