Celebrating 40 Years CHARITY TOURNAMENT APRIL 29, 2019

Thank you to all of our FRIENDS of GOLF!

1 FRIENDS OF GOLF (FOG)

Friends of Golf (FOG) was founded in 1979 by a group of golfers who wanted to make it possible for aspiring junior golfers (irrespective of their economic standing) to play, compete and excel in the game of golf. Now celebrating its 40th year, the non-profit organization has raised over $8 million and has allocated those funds, along with used golf equipment to hundreds of high school golf programs, 25 college and university golf teams, and 7 scholarship foundations across the USA. FOG is very proud of the impact it’s had on young golfers embodied by the wonderful “thank you” letters we receive. For heartfelt testimonials and other ways that you can support Friends of Golf throughout the year, please visit our website at www.friendsofgolf.org.

3 WELCOME

Welcome to the 40th Annual FOG Charity Golf Tournament at Bel-Air Country Club. This year, we are truly blessed to be honoring Brooks Koepka. Brooks was the PGA Tour Player of the Year in 2018, as well as defending his U.S. Open Championship and winning the PGA Championship. This success vaulted him into the # 1 ranking in the world at the end of last year!

With your support today and throughout the year, Friends of Golf is able to continue funding golf’s future at multiple levels. Historically, FOG has been a significant contributor to both high school and collegiate golf. As we approach the $9 million mark in donations, FOG has expanded its footprint by adding our support for youth golf organizations like SCGA Junior, SCPGA Junior Tour and The First Tee.

FOG is the only organization to ever receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NCAA Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). We continue to be founding sponsors of both the Trophy Award and Dinah Shore Trophy, which honors both the male and female college golfers of the year.

Each year, FOG presents the “Spirit of Giving” Award to individual(s) who have made significant contributions to Friends of Golf. This year, we are recognizing TWO very special individuals who have consistently gone above and beyond as Sponsors and FOG Board Members. They are Tom Debrowski and Joe Sindelar.

As always, our heartfelt thanks go out to all of our participants, volunteers and sponsors, especially our Title Sponsor, Konica Minolta. You’re the people who have allowed FOG to truly make the diference to boys and girls who represent the future of golf and our nation.

13 WE GET LETTERS The letters we received this past year not only ofer thanks but remind us that FOG’s value extends beyond the golf course and into the community. Many coaches, especially at the high school level are fighting budget cuts and other economic realities and FOG’s support is the primary reason their programs survive.

“ Thank you for your generous gift and continuous support of the SCGA Junior Golf Foundation. We believe every kid, no matter what circumstances the person is born into, should have the opportunity to enjoy the game of golf and receive the lifelong benefits the game has to ofer. With your help, we are creating local golf communities that provide a safe, supportive, and encouraging environment for youth to have fun, explore their future, and develop the necessary skills to achieve their goals. Your support makes a diference to us and all the kids we serve.” Suzanne Kelley, SCGA President & Kevin Gigax, SCGA Executive Director

“ I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my sincere appreciation for your kind donations to our boys and girls golf programs. As fees increase at golf courses, it’s becoming harder to keep programs such as golf open in many schools. It has been a pleasure being able to coach these young adults and in part is because of the donations from FOG. We have been able to practice and play diferent courses, pay for the matches and buy gloves and tees. Last year our girls’ team came in third place and this season we won league for the first time in the school’s history.” Wilquin Garcia, Girls and Boys Golf Coach, Sylmar Charter High School, Sylmar, CA

“ Thank you for your recent donation to the Citrus Valley High School Boys and Girls Golf Programs. Your generosity is of great assistance in providing these student athletes with much needed supplies including range balls for practice before matches. This simple letter and the words it contains cannot adequately express the gratitude we have for your ongoing support of our school, staf and students!” Rhonda Bruce, Principal, Citrus Valley High School, Redlands, CA

71 THE BEN HOGAN TROPHY

TOM HARMON BEN HOGAN

Famed Heisman Trophy (1940) football great Tom Harmon realized one of his final dreams posthumously, as he died a few weeks before the April 23, 1990 presentation of the first Ben Hogan Trophy. Bel-Air member Harmon, as the 1989 Chairman of the Friends of Golf Tournament, was determined to create an award along the lines of his own Heisman Trophy. As a tribute to greatness in his new love, the game of golf, Tom was able to gain the endorsement of his friend, the immortal Ben Hogan. Hogan’s mystique identifies with excellence through dedicated and tireless pursuit of perfection. This identity is transferred to the beautiful Waterford crystal trophy displayed at Bel-Air. Annually, until 2001, the college Golf Coaches Association of America selected the top college golfer-academic as the winner of the Hogan Trophy. The Colonial Club, in Hogan’s home town of Ft. Worth, joined FOG as a co-sponsor. The top amateur golfer, as selected by the GCAA, is presented the Hogan Award annually in May at the Colonial Club. The permanent trophy, a replica of which is given to the college represented by the winning player, remains at its base at Bel-Air Country Club. Ben Hogan’s passing in 1997 brought a most remarkable golfing career to an end; but the Trophy carrying his name will preserve the memory of the man and his extraordinary achievements, together with honoring the young golfers who have combined golfing and academic achievement, something Hogan would have wanted. This year’s list of 10 semifinalists was unveiled on Wednesday, April 17. On Thursday, May 2, that group will be pared down to three finalists. The finalists will attend a black-tie dinner at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, on Monday, May 20, prior to the start of the PGA TOUR’s Charles Schwab Challenge, where the winner will be crowned.

81 “SPIRIT OF GIVING” AWARD NAMED AFTER KEN VENTURI

In 2012, for the first time in its history, Friends of Golf (FOG) created the inaugural Ken Venturi “Spirit of Giving” Award to honor Ken Venturi and his commitment to be an inspiring and motivating force for young golfers everywhere. Ken was a friend of FOG for many years—almost since its inception. Through the years, he graciously contributed his time to support the mission of FOG by attending the event every year, conducting clinics for the players, and attracting many of the top professional golfers to contribute their time and interest to fostering good will for the young amateur and college golfer.

Each new year, FOG will honor another individual who represents similar values and devotes their life to giving and inspiring young golfers everywhere. It is clear that an award for giving should be named after Ken Venturi and that those that follow in receiving the “Spirit of Giving” Award are recognized through his name.
