CROSS COUNTRY Both girls and boys teams found themselves on the bubble last season. The girls finished in the top half of the district as a team with only one runner, Taylor Vogt, among the top individuals. One other finisher among the top 15 would likely have allowed the girls to advance to region and then to state. Similarly, the boys finished strong at region, led by Michael Thomas, but were just a few place finishes shy of advancing to the state meet. That should change in 2019. Led by captains Janie Chatham and Jackson Dillingham, all but one of last year’s runners return this fall, including senior stalwart Jordan Stacy. The Falcons also face a realigned district and region that no longer sets them up against perennial power Oak Hall. A strong track season and increased dedication to summer conditioning has SSES taking aim at district and region trophies and their highest team finishes yet at the state meet on Nov. 9. The Falcons will look to make a splash to open their season on Aug. 9, at the new site of the district , Southwest Florida Christian Academy.

BOYS GOLF Boys golf has a storied history at Saint Stephen’s that includes a pair of state championships (2000 and 2004), a trio of prep All-Americans, and a lengthy roster of successful collegiate and professional performers. Recent Saint Stephen’s teams have kept that tradition of excellence alive. The Falcons have dominated local play, winning two district and three regional championships since 2014, and advanced to four consecutive state tournaments, finishing 5th (2014), 7th (2015), 3rd (2016), and 2nd (2017). Individually, a Saint Stephen’s golfer placed in the top 10 at state in four straight tournaments – Ryan Kinkead and David Hu (6th/9th in 2017), Alan Klenor (10th/2016), Justin Wynen (8th/2015) and Jack Cen (6th/2014). Last year’s team expectedly felt the losses of three Division I players (Ryan Kinkead- Boston College, Massimo Mbetse-USF and Klenor-FSU) and failed to three-peat as district champs. They will continue to rebuild this season under new head coach Judy Carlson.

GIRLS GOLF The girls golf program at Saint Stephen’s has emerged as an annual contender for the state championship. Although the Falcons are still seeking their elusive first FHSAA team title, they have qualified for seven consecutive state championship tournaments and registered four Top-10 finishes, including taking the tenth-place spot in 2018. Saint Stephen’s has dominated district and regional play since 2012, winning district crowns in each of the past seven seasons and regional titles in six of the past seven campaigns. The 2019 Falcons will feel the loss of graduated seniors Catherine Huang and Kendall Miller, but have solid leadership returning in junior Maria Huang. She was the medalist at last year’s district tournament with the only under-par round. Huang then shot a combined 161 at the state tournament. The Falcons call the course at The Links at Greenfield Plantation their home and are led by veteran coach Letitia Zilar.

SWIMMING/DIVING Senior co-captains Nicholas Mattheys and Anika Kennedy will lead the team this fall. Mattheys will be a threat to qualify for the state meet in several events and is within striking distance of several Falcon records. As 2018 district champion in the 50 free, Kennedy is in search of her first individual state appearance this fall. Having lost three senior state qualifiers, this will be a rebuilding year for the boys program. The girls relay teams will continue to be strong, with a goal to qualify a relay for state competition. Overall, the Falcons have substantial depth, with more than 40 swimmers on the roster. With half of these swimmers coming from the middle school or 6th grade, the building blocks for a strong program are being put in place. The 2019 team will look to continue its dual meet winning streak against Braden River, Manatee, Bayshore, Palmetto, and Bradenton Christian and also maintain its Sprint Cup championship title against ODA. The Falcons are focused on qualifying every swimmer for the district meet and a record number for regionals. The team will also travel to Atlanta in September to participate in its third Open Water swim event for Swim Across America. In total, SSES has raised more than $58,000 for cancer research.

VOLLEYBALL Volleyball has become one of the most popular sports for girls at Saint Stephen’s and the Falcons have generated a number of successful teams in recent years. SSES won its first district title in 2010 and followed that up with another in 2012. Those two championship teams produced four future collegiate players. The 2019 Falcons will be looking to rekindle some of that fire following three consecutive losing seasons that have produced a combined record of just 22-28. Saint Stephen’s will continue its rebuilding process under the direction of new head coach Juan Garcia. Garcia comes to Saint Stephen’s from an athletic director’s position in Ohio, and with an extensive resume coaching at the interscholastic and club levels in Ohio and Tennessee. He inherits a team with some solid returning players to build around, including seniors Sarah Stevens and Kate Folkens, and sisters Ella and Julia Dodge. BOYS SOCCER GIRLS SOCCER Very few high school programs – in any sport – have been Under first-year Head Coach Guy Virgilio in 2018-19, the Falcons as consistently successful as the Falcons. Saint Stephen’s has captured their first district championship since 2014 and reached the state tournament four times since winning its lone advanced to regional play. Saint Stephen’s opened the season title in 2001, and advanced to the final four in 2011, 2014 and 9-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 1A before dropping 2015. BOYS TENNIS With four state championship teams and multiple singles and doubles titles to its credit, boys tennis is one of the most decorated programs in Saint Stephen’s athletics history. The Falcons have captured 15 district, six regional, and four state crowns – the first in 1986 and their most recent in 2015. The 2019 Falcons continued that strong tradition under head coach Scott Shields, winning district and regional titles, and advancing all the way to the Class 1A state championship match before finishing as state runner-up with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Boca Raton St. Andrews in the tournament finale. The Falcons have gone 31-6 over the past three seasons in dual matches and will have to replace the steady production of graduates Max Damm and Max Petrov. Damm had a career record of 36-5, won two district singles titles, three district doubles titles, two state doubles runner-ups and a state doubles championship. Petrov was 40-3 as a Falcon with three district singles and doubles crowns. In 2019, he recorded the most singles (11) and doubles (10) victories on the team. Despite those roster losses, Saint Stephen’s should be a contender again in 2020 with six talented players returning, led by No. 1 singles/doubles player Kevin Jiang. Also back on the court are senior Max Bonte and junior Gleb Ibragimov, who both won district singles and doubles titles last year, along with promising youngsters Leonardo Dal Boni, Jake Pettingell and Ricardo Perazzolo.

GIRLS TENNIS No program at Saint Stephen’s has produced more state championships or featured more high-profile players than girls tennis. The Falcons have collected seven Florida team titles overall, including a run of four consecutive from 1986-89. Only three other schools in state girls tennis history can boast longer streaks. The Falcons’ run of consecutive titles in the late 80s was fueled by players including Terri and Sherri Vitale, Laura Randmaa, Cymantha Owen, Victoria Jarrell, Madeline Sanchez, Donna Faber and Diana Van Gulick. Clark put together one of the finest campaigns in SSES AUG. 15 VS. WINDERMERE PREP - [6 P.M.) history last year, rushing for more than 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns. He displayed a rare combination of power and AUG. 23 VS. ADMIRAL FARRAGUT - [7 P.M.) speed, averaging a healthy 8.8 yards each time he touched the football. The offense will no doubt lean on him heavily again in 2019. AUG. 30 AT CAMBRIDGE CHRISTIAN - [7:30 P.M.) If Clark provides the flash, Davis and Vining – who hold offers from West Point, among others – are the hammers. An all- SEPT. 6 AT ST. PETERSBURG CATHOLIC - [7 P.M.) state selection as a junior, Davis ably anchors both lines for the Falcons. He clears the way for the offense and led the SEPT. 13 VS. LEMON BAY - [7 P.M.) team a season ago with 20 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 16 quarterback hurries. Vining, the team’s emotional leader, was SEPT. 20 VS. NORTHSIDE CHRISTIAN - [7 P.M.) limited a bit by a leg injury in 2018, but still collected more than 60 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception. He is a heat-seeking missile from his linebacker SEPT. 27 VS. OUT-OF-DOOR - [7 P.M.) spot. [HOMECOMING] Also returning is the team’s leading pass receiver in Ty Barker. The senior made 24 grabs for more than 300 yards a season VS. ago and scored four times. Another two-way player, Barker is OCT. 4 BRADENTON CHRISTIAN - [7 P.M.) also a key on the defensive side of the field as a hybrid safety/ linebacker. OCT. 11 AT BISHOP MCLAUGHLIN - [7 P.M.) Juniors Matthew Konkol (26 tackles, 10 receptions) and Calvin Sauerbeck (66 tackles, four caused fumbles, one interception) will be counted on for consistent production and leadership. Senior Alex Sket and junior Brock Gay will join Davis as FOOTBALL RECORD BOOK important players in the trenches. Season Coach Record Finding a new quarterback to manage the offense will be a big 2018 T. Creneti 10-2# key in determining how far the Falcons will go in 2019. Senior 2017 T. Creneti 11-0* Trystan Brown took most of the snaps in the spring and would 2016 T. Creneti 11-1* appear to be the first option for the coaching staff. Also, keep 2015 T. Creneti 9-2# an eye on Palmetto High School transfer Dylan Zervos, a junior. 2014 T. Creneti 8-3 The emergence of Saint Stephen’s football has clearly created 2013 T. Creneti 6-5 a new sense of excitement on campus. Friday game nights have become prime-time events, thanks to the high-powered 2012 T. Creneti 4-7 Falcons and the enthusiastic green & gold-clad fans who 2011 T. Creneti 0-10 regularly fill the state-of-the-art Moore Athletic Complex at 2010 S. Brown 2-8 Turner Fields. The 2019 schedule features annual league games 2009 S. Brown 4-6 that add spice with local rivals Bradenton Christian and Out-of- 2008 M. Kitchie 5-5 Door Academy. SSES and ODA play yearly for the Headmaster’s 2007 M. Kitchie 5-5 Cup, a series the Falcons have owned since 2013 with seven consecutive victories. The season opens with a rematch of the 2006 M. Kitchie 1-3 2017 SSAC championship game when Windermere Prep visits the MAC. The Falcons also face a rare public school opponent Overall 76-57 when they host Englewood Lemon Bay on Sept. 13.
