National Impact Report

Nuclear Science Week 2014

About Nuclear Science Week

A Message from the National Steering Chair

I am pleased to provide this report, although it cannot hope to capture every aspect and nuance of the many people and organizations that participated in Nuclear Science Week (NSW), 2014. This report should help partners, participating organizations, sponsors and the public see the rich opportunity for discussion and dialogue about the important role that nuclear energy plays in our world. Through countless contacts, celebrations, presentations, one-on-one interactions, visitations and webcast viewings, NSW brings a kaleidoscope of career paths, research

1 excitement, industrial applications, medical practices to many people. Many of these are school students who know little about this energy form. Much is done to outreach into these communities, but even more remains for the years ahead. If you are one of the many participants in NSW 2014, I thank you and I hope you will join with us again next year with a observance that is unique to your interest, organization or community.

As part of Nuclear Science Week ANS has encouraged our sections to build awareness of nuclear science and technology at the local level. Since 2010, Local and Student Sections, corporations, schools, and individuals have organized or participated in events in their communities with a common goal: to promote the benefits of nuclear science and technology in our everyday lives. Now in its fourth year, ANS would like to thank the following sections that made the third week of October a remarkable week:

1. Chicago Local Section

8 2. Eastern Washington Local Section (ANS-EWS) 3. Georgia Institute of Technology Student Section 4. Idaho State University Student Section 5. Missouri University of Science and Technology Student Section 6. North Carolina State University Student Section 7. Northeastern Local Section 8. Oak Ridge/Knoxville Local Section / UT Student Section 9. Student Section 10. Puget Sound Local Section 11. University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign Student Section 12. University of Sharjah Student Section 13. University of Student Section 14. University of Utah Student Section and Alpha Nu Sigma Chapters

Through the ANS Public Information Assistance (PIA) Grant Program and the Center for Nuclear Science and Technology Information, these sections received nearly $8,000 in cash grants and outreach materials to distribute at their events. Together, ANS organized 27 events in 14 cities, and was able to reach 2,500 youth, educators, and the general public at large.

ANS National arranged for Illinois Governor Pat Quinn to issue a proclamation declaring October 20-24, 2014, as Nuclear Science Week. We urge all of our sections to request gubernatorial proclamations next year for Nuclear Science Week (third week of October) for their states.

Student impact: NSW is pleased to continue a partnership with The National Science Teacher Association (NSTA). NSTA provided connection to their web services for streaming proceedings in Seattle. In addition, NEI created web streaming content in Washington DC. Students participated from across the US thanks to NEI, NSTA and to Carl Greninger in Seattle. Mr. Greninger provided audio and video capture for the streaming of the proceedings and presentations at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle.

ANS also initiated several student activities during NSW 2014. The first is an “Achievement Patch” issued by the Girl Scouts. This patch called “Get to Know Nuclear”, rolled out during NSW. In addition, the newly developed “Isotope Discovery Kit” was offered and began use in Albuquerque as well as other sites.

11 Web site links and connections: There were literally a hundred web links at many corporate, regional, partner and museum website pages. They are too numerous to mention but a select few are included here.

13

Communications: Getting the word out about nuclear is the primary goal of NSW hence the moniker, “Get to Know Nuclear”.

New Logo & Website: The updating of the NSW Website made a big difference in the visibility and professional appearance of the event for 2014. Not only was the web site renovated but also a new polished logo was created by Museum Graphic Artist, Kyan Ramirez. The Museum PR & Communication Team lead by Jennifer Hayden assisted by Kyan Ramirez and Evan Jenkins did the work at no cost to the program. The new logo also dropped the word “national” with the realization that the event is now being celebrated in other countries besides the United States.

Media Mentions, on-line, blogs: NSW was seen in many print and electronic media places from newspapers to websites and social media postings and blogs. The interest in posting was exceptional for 2014 with impacts reaching 1.3 million during a ten-day period preceding, during and right after.

14 The next years for Nuclear Science Week: The Request for National Site Celebration Proposals will be in the public information on December 12, 2014 and then the RFP for the 2016 event will be out in May of 2016 thereby increasing the months available for planning a submission.
