CONCERTS AT THE JAMES The Conservatorium of Music through the Newcastle has been liaising with the organisers of the James Theatre Events to provide four concerts on the first Sunday of each month beginning in May.

At this month’s show we saw the Conservatorium Community Choirs including the Callaghan Singers directed by Phyl Danvers, The Brainwaves and Seniors Choirs directed by Bernadette Matthias and the Children’s Ensemble directed by Chris Blake. This was a great afternoon of music and also featured a local artist which is a great opportunity for a young singer. Ronnie Piper entertained the crowd with his rendition of ‘Magic to Do’ from the Musical Pippin and ‘The Sound of Music’ from the hit Broadway show. There have been many compliments made to the Music Department about Ronnie’s performances. Well done Ronnie. The Community Choirs are open to all enthusiasts so if you are keen then it is only a matter of getting in touch with the Conservatorium of Music in Newcastle to find details of each group.

On Sunday 5th of June a Brass Concert will be held at 2pm. As well as students from the Conservatorium Harry Wheeler and the Wheeler family will be providing the local performances on the day. It will be a very entertaining afternoon so if you are able to attend it will be well worth the effort.

Port Stephens Rugby League Champions! The 13 Years boy’s rugby league team headed to Raymond Terrace on Friday to play in the 2016 Knight Knockout zone round. The team was a good blend of experienced and new players to the game but they gelled instantly to defeat Tomaree High in dominant style. Next up the boys played with barely 5 minutes rest but there was no signs of fatigue, piling on 6 tries to 1 in another scintillating performance.

The final game loomed as a ding dong battle with both teams going into the game undefeated. The much larger Hunter River side looked dangerous and got off to a good start with Dungog dropping the ball from the kick off. The DHS team dug in and defended their line with courage for 12 straight tackles. Each player seemed to lift in confidence from the valiant effort and pressured their opponents relentlessly to run away with the win 4 tries to nil.

Having scored over 70 points and conceded just 4 it was truly a dominating display from the team. The boys now play in the quarter finals on 21st of June again at Raymond Terrace. Mr Francey was impressed by how disciplined the team was in the blustery conditions and by how willing they were to motivate and support each other. Well done guys! Mr Francey - coach

Singleton Horse Sports On Friday 27th of May, the Dungog High School equestrian team travelled to Singleton showground to participate in the Singleton Horse sports day. The Dungog High team was made up of 21 students and their horses, who competed against 185 riders from schools throughout the Hunter and Central Coast.

Our students braved the cold and windy conditions and competed in a variety of events, including riding classes, hack classes and sporting events.

Congratulations to Jazmin Neilson who was Champion 15 years girl rider and Matt Tippett who was Reserve Champion 14 year boy rider. Congratulations also to Alesha Leayr who received the 15 years girl encouragement award.

Congratulations to each and every rider for their effort and personal best as we achieved Reserve Champion High School Highest Point Score. This was only a 1 point behind the Champion High School of the day. An outstanding achievement for Dungog High School and all students should be proud of this achievement.

I would like to thank the parents and carers who made the huge commitment to transport the students and horses to Singleton for the day. A special thank you to Lyn Campbell for her assistance with organisation, and also to the parents who volunteered to work on an event. Your help and effort is much appreciated.

The team were excellent representatives of Dungog High school, displaying Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best at all times. Jessica Kemp Term 2 Week 6 3 30th May 2016

Dungog High Open Girls Tennis Team Last Tuesday the Dungog Open Girls Tennis Team travelled to District Park Tennis Courts, Broadmeadow to compete in the Floris Conway Cup Gala Day. The team comprised of Elyse Standing, Hannah Marquet, Charlotte Standing and Georgia Stewart. With having forfeited in round one of the tournament Dungog was to progress straight into round two of the tournament.

With the girls displaying high spirits and enthusiasm, Dungog High School was to play Hunter Sports High School in our first match for the day. All knew this would be a tough challenge, however with a positive attitude and the mind set of knowing they could compete against some of the greatest players meant they knew they were in with a chance. After a long two hours and many close rallies a total of eight sets were played, both schools were four sets a piece; the winner was to be declared by count back of games won 32 -28. Dungog was victorious!! Much excitement, praise and smiles were had after this game. Great shots combined with long rallies were played and contested with numerous spectators commenting on the girls’ talent and sportsmanship.

With the team moving into the semi-final of the tournament our next opponents for the day was Whitebridge High School. After another close battle in our doubles matches and hard fought rallies eventuating between our top singles matches the team was again triumphant with a five sets to three win. By this stage all were feeling quite tired, but knew that their efforts had paid off to reach the finals. A fine effort!

Despite the cold, windy weather and the afternoon going much later than first anticipated, the final was to be contested with Lambton High School. With not a lot of time to rest between our previous two rounds both the doubles and single matches were played. The Dungog girls tried their hardest but unfortunately went down in all our games. Lambton displayed a high level of precision and accuracy and were unfortunately too good on the day for our girls. All should be proud of reaching the final and having displayed such athleticism and natural talent. Getting to the final is a fantastic achievement and one they should be very proud of.

A special mention must go to Mrs Karen Daffy for her help in the organisation of the team and the support from the parents who also attended on the day. I know the girls were appreciative of your support and enthusiasm on the sidelines.

The team were outstanding representatives of Dungog High School and deserve the highest of praise for reaching the final. I would like to extend my congratulations to Elyse, Hannah, Charlotte and Georgia on behalf of Dungog High School and wish them well in their future sporting endeavours. Well done girls! Maddy Cook Team Manager

The Australian Teenage Expo Dungog High School was fortunate to have been selected as one of two schools in NSW to experience The Australian Teenage Expo on Friday 27th May. Sonya Karras and Sacha Kaluri were the inspirational presenters whose aim for the day was to ensure students left feeling good about themselves and knowing they can achieve anything. They told personal stories that allowed students to identify with Sonya and Sacha and gave them the tools to improve their self-esteem and make better choices about having a more fulfilling life. Not only did students get to hear the message that has been shared with more than 200 schools each year, they also got the chance to be entertained by 3 young Melbourne performers Rachel Costanzo, Frank Dixon and Zain Griffin.

Term 2 Week 6 4 30th May 2016

I would like to thank Ms Louise Rowley for her support with supervision all day and her fabulous, and very professional, media crew, who are currently editing their footage and will produce a documentary, Mrs Phyl Danvers who ensured all went will with the stage, lighting and sound and all the staff who supported with supervision during the day.

Many students, including our junior SRC, helped out on the day by setting up tables, running errands, supporting the performers and packing everything up at the end of the day. Eva Davies was our amazing MC for the day and made sure both shows ran without a hitch. Finally, Ian Parsons was an amazing supporter of the day. As usual Ian made sure everything was ready to go the day before, he arrived at 7.30 am on Friday to get the gear set up for the day and support the performers through their rehearsals and was last to leave when all was packed up. Thanks so much Ian for your help. The success of the day was largely due to your efforts!

Health and Wellbeing News Mental health roadshow coming to the Lower Hunter Schools and communities across the Lower Hunter will be visited by The Champions mental health roadshow beginning on June 22nd.

Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network will host mental health advocate and renowned speaker, Nic Newling to share his personal experiences with mental illnesses and suicide. The roadshow aims to educate community members on mental health issues, reduce stigma, and lower the barriers of entry to mental healthcare services.

After sharing his story on Australian Story last year, Nic recently made the decision to leave his job at the Black Dog Institute in order to tour the country to talk to students and families.

All members of the community are invited to hear him speak in Maitland at EMBC beginning at 6:30pm on June 22nd. The roadshow will also include talks to students at Rutherford High School, Dungog High School, and throughout the week.

“I was once a top student until I became unwell, suffering and putting on a mask each day. I learnt so much more about mental health through conversations with fellow patients in hospital wards than I ever did in a classroom. After I dropped out of school I realised that mental health education often lacked the most important side to it – the human side. That's what I want to change,” Nic said.

Maitland Region Suicide Prevention Network spokesperson and event organiser, Terry Sjostedt believes reducing the stigma of mental illness in our community is very important.

Mr Sjostedt said.’I am pleased to be a part of the team bringing Nic Newling to Hunter High Schools. We believe the message that the students will receive from Nic will be inspirational and powerful. It will strengthen them and stay with them for a long time afterwards’. Nic’s presentations are an off-the-cuff narrative of what the mental health journey has been like for him, his friends, and his family. It's unscripted and deeply personal. Being unscripted and raw allows Nic a freedom to further explore topics of particular interest to an audience through interactive Q&A sessions.

He is now speaking on behalf of The Champions, a new initiative aimed at 2016 GENERAL CONTRIBUTION championing sharing to improve mental health. $80 per Yr 7 – Yr 10 student. "I believe that the more I share, the more other people will begin to have these important conversations in their communities too. More people can be receptive to $100 per Yr 11 & 12 student discussing mental illness than we realise. I never knew that until years later.” Nic These fees have now been invoiced.
