AND THEY SAY IT'S HARD TO GET (T)HERE: Even though getting into the NCAA Championship Tournament may be the most difficult, travel to the actual first round site is going to test the patience of the WSU team…the Crimson-clad Cougars leave the Palouse campus Wed., Nov. 29, at 7:45 a.m. PT, using bus transportation to the Spokane Airport where it will board a plane for Seattle (what, you say this is the wrong direction??)…from SeaTac Airport, the Cougs will travel aboard US Air to Philadelphia…the last leg of the trip will come on the wings of a commuter plane to State College, Pennsylvania, home of Penn State, with an expected arrival time of 10:50 p.m. ET…even when you subtract the three-hour time difference, it's still at 12-hour day…makes the Snoqualmie Pass route look like a picnic…while at State College, the Cougars will be staying at the Toftree Hotel & Resort (814-234-8000).

INFO ON THE TEAMS PLAYING AT STATE COLLEGE PACFIC REGIONAL:

TENNESSEE (23-9) - The Lady Volunteers from Knoxville, Tennessee, are making their sixth NCAA appearance but the first since 1993…while all sports fans are familiar with the orange and white-clad women's basketball team, the Lady Vols volleyball squad had a 9-5 record for third in the SEC East…led by 6-2 junior OH Ariana Wilson (4.70 kpg) and 6-1 sophomore MB Janelle Hester (3.34 kpg)…Wilson, from Cincinnati, Ohio, is a two- time first team All-SEC selection after leading the conference in kills…Hester, from Davenport, Iowa, is familiar with Cougar coaches Fredrick and Farokhmanesh as she attended summer camps they conducted in Iowa…Hester and junior setter Erica Lear (13.60 assists per game) were named to the All-SEC second team…Tennessee is coached by former Stanford assistant, Rob Patrick (76-51, four years)…WSU holds the advantage in the short series with the Lady Vols, with a 3-2 win at the 1988 Illinois State Invitational.

PENN STATE (27-5) - The Nittany Lions are the defending NCAA Volleyball Champions, and the top seed in the first round at State College…PSU has been in all 20 NCAA volleyball tournaments…Penn State is ranked 8th in the latest USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 poll…the Lions finished third in the Big Ten with a 16-4 record, behind Wisconsin and Minnesota…led offensively by 6-2 sophomore MH Mishka Levy (4.56 kpg) and 6-0 junior OH Katie Schumacher (3.55 kpg)…defensive leaders are 6-3 sophomore MH Robyn Guokas (1.46 blocks per game) and 6-1 freshman MH Cara Smith (1.38 bpg)…coached by Russ Rose (718-126, 22 years)…WSU and Penn State have met only once, at the 1996 Mizuno USA Cup in with the Lions grabbing a 3-0 win…Penn State has a 21-0 record when playing NCAA matches in its home of Rec Hall, with 19 of those being 3-0 win.

JAMES MADISON (21-9) - The Dukes, located in Harrisonburg, Va., are the Colonial Athletic Association champions with a 9-5 record in league) and an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament…this is JMU's second trip to the NCAA, its first in 1999 where University of San Diego defeated the Dukes in the first round…6-0 senior MH Karla Gessler is a four-time All-Colonial first team selection and leads the team with 3.65 kpg…junior RS Danielle Heinbaugh adds 3.32 kpg…coached by Disa Johnson-Garner (21-9 in first year at JMU, and career record of 75-146, 7 years)…WSU has not yet played James Madison.

REGIONAL POLL: Is the NCAA Div. I women's Volleyball Pacific Region a tough one?? Every school listed in the final regional rankings (Nov. 21) made it to the tournament…the top five teams from the Pacific Region were among the top 16 seeded teams in the tournament: 1. USC, 2. Arizona, 3. Santa Clara, 4. UCLA, 5. Pepperdine, 6. Loyola Marymount, 7. Washington State, 8. Stanford, 9. Arizona State, 10. Sacramento State…the Pacific Region is comprised of schools from the Big Sky, Pacific-10 and West Coast Conferences.

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE STANDINGS: Washington State is 21st on the national attendance standings with an average of 1,086 fans in 13 home matches (14,116 total attendance)…Hawai'i leads with a 6,759 average (18 matches)…Stanford is the top Pac-10 school (1,660 fans, 10th nationally) followed by Arizona (1,603, 11th)…WSU averaged 1,263 fans for the nine home Pac-10 matches this season.

NATIONAL STATISTICAL RANKINGS: In the latest NCAA national team statistical rankings (through matches of Nov. 19), Washington State was 11th in kills with 17.67 kills per game (1. Santa Clara 19.42), and 12th in assists with 15.85 assists per game (1. Santa Clara 17.90).

COUGAR COACHING STAFF: Head coach Cindy Fredrick has compiled a 227-151 (.601) record in her 12 years on the Palouse…her overall collegiate record is 313-211 (.597) in 16 years…Fredrick has a 106-110 (.491) record in Pac-10 conference matches, fourth-best among league coaches…she is joined by assistant coaches, her husband, Dr. Mashallah Farokhmanesh (12th year) and former Cougar standout, Jennifer Stinson Greeny (first year).

Brittney Diaz (5-11, Fr., MH, Las Cruces, NM) will redshirt this season…Diaz, the Gatorade Player of the Year for New Mexico, tore her ACL and had surgery last November…will utilize the Fall to complete her recovery.

#1 Melissa Boyle (6-1, Jr., MB/OH, Boise, Idaho) transferred in January 2000 from Utah Valley State…practiced only with team last spring…moved from OH sub to starter at MB for California (8 kills, hit .273, 3 blocks)…in OSU/UO series had 25 kills (.451) and 10 blocks…tallied 16 kills, 9 blocks at ASU…seventh in Pac-10 standings with 1.11 blocks per game in conference matches…supplies 2.15 kpg…named to 2000 Pac-10 All- Academic Second Team.

#3 Kali Surplus (6-0, Jr., RS/S, Gresham, Ore.) transferred from Salt Lake CC…NJCAA All-American setter...selected to Cougar Challenge and Fresno State Invitational All-Tournament teams…unflappable setter…13.09 assists per game average is fourth in Pac-10 rankings but 14.12 apg is second in Pac-10 only stats…total assists of 1,270 is 6th among WSU all-time career leaders…needs only 63 assists to move into fifth spot…career-high 7 blocks at California…hit .583 at Oregon with 7 kills and no errors in 12 attacks…nailed three service aces at Oregon State…named to 2000 All-Pac-10 honorable mention team.

#6 Kortney Jamtaas (5-6, So., OH/DS, Orinda, Calif.) second year as back row starter...averages 2.57 digs per game which is third on team…played front row at Cal (3 kills) and at Arizona (2 kills)…19 digs versus Kansas State is career-best…nailed three service aces at Idaho…named to 2000 Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention team.

#7 Zanda Bautre (5-9, Fr., OH, Riga, Latvia) Fredrick calls her WSU's International Secret Weapon…moved into starting spot end of September, now shares with Adrian Hankoff…best efforts include vs. Washington (21 kills, .419, 10 digs), vs. Oregon State (18 kills, .485, 17 digs), at Stanford (14 kills 18 digs), and at ASU (20 kills, 10 digs)…third on team in hitting percentage at .249…has seven double-doubles in Pac-10 contests (kills, digs)…named to the 2000 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.

#8 Trina Kightlinger (6-1, Sr., MH, Yorba Linda, Calif.) transferred from Loyola Marymount as a junior…starter earlier in season, now subs in at middle…tied with Holly Harris at 1.08 blocks per game average but has played in slightly less than 2/3rds of WSU's 97 games so isn't ranked among Pac-10 top 10…tallied 10 blocks and 17 kills versus ASU…named to 2000 Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention team.

#9 Camila Schmitz Rower (6-0, Jr., OH, Novo Hamburgo, RS, ) transferred from Arizona Western College…married to Cougar basketball center 7-1, 301-pound Paulo Rower…played in seven matches.

#10 Adrian Hankoff (5-11, So., OH, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) shares left side with Bautre after starting first 14 matches…now a spark plug off the bench…subbed in at Oregon and OSU for 14 kills (.387) and four blocks…tallied career-high 20 kills at Idaho…this season 2.44 kpg is fifth on team.

#12 Holly Harris (6-2, So., MB, Sandy, Utah) two-year starter at MB...named to Cougar Challenge and Fresno State Invite All-Tournament teams…narrowly missed a triple double with 13 kills, 14 digs and 9 blocks against 17th ranked Kansas State…versus Arizona State had 17 kills, 13 blocks and 6 digs…1.08 blocks per game is tied for tops on team and 6th in Pac-10…her .272 hitting percentage leads Cougs and 2.78 kills per game is third on team…named to 2000 Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention team.

#13 Chelsie Schafer (5-10, So., RS/S, Saskatoon, Sak., ) spent spring drills and competition at setter…sets when WSU runs a 6-2 offense…second on team as server with 26 aces, 0.31 apg., (9th, Pac-10)…second on team with 3.32 kills per game and 3.00 digs per game (8th, Pac-10)…hammered career-high 27 kills and hit .512 (13 digs, five blocks) in win over Oregon State…slammed home 24 kills (.265) and 17 digs in Stanford win…named to 2000 All-Pac-10 honorable mention team…named to 2000 Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention team.
