Five noctuid species are recorded from Europe for the first time: Eublemma conistrota Hampson, 1910, Eiiblemma deserti Rothschild, 1909, Anumeta hilgerti (Rothschild 1909), Hadiila deserticula (Hampson 1905), and Eiixoa canariensis Rebel, 1902. New synonyms are stated: Leptosia velocissima f. tarda Turati, 1926, syn. n. and Leptosia griseimargo Warren, 1912, syn. n., both synonyms of Metachrostis velox (Hübner, 1813); and Pseudohadena (Eremohadena) roseonitens espugnensis Lajonquiere, 1964, syn. n., a synonym of P. (E.) roseonitens roseonitens (Oberthür, 1887). A new subspecies of Xylena exsoleta (Linneaus, 1758), Xylena exsoleta maltensis ssp. n., is established. The literature on Maltese Noctuoidea is reviewed and erronuousely reported species are indicated. -

Larvae have been recorded on Douglas-fir, fir, juniper, larch, pine (lodgepole pine, Scots pine), and spruce. Early instar larvae feed inside the needles of new growth and later instars feed on older foliage. Outbreaks of P. flammea in pine plantations in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe have caused damage to thousands of acres and resulted in significant tree mortality. In the UK, adults are present from March through May. Twenty to eighty year old pine monocultures are especially at risk, and lodgepole pine, common in the western U.S., has been attacked when planted in Scotland (see Bradshaw et al. 1983; Sukovata et al. 2003). Panolis flammea is a member of the Noctuidae (tribe Hadenini), the family of moths (Lepidoptera) with the largest number of total species and also the most pest species. -

INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately. -
CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Ortiz Resumen Se aportan los datos faunísticos de 129 especies de la familia Noctuidae del Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa (Asturias), de las que 108 pertenecen a la subfamilia Noctuinae. Esta fauna se caracteriza por presentar una influencia euroasiática, con una proporción del 48,1%, que alcanza el 64,3% en los elementos de amplía dis- tribución si se le añaden los elementos holárticos (7,0%), paleárticos (4,6%) y cosmopolitas y tropicales (4,6%). Entre los taxones que se citan por primera vez en el área de estudio destaca el endemismo Allophyes alfaroi, que supone solamente el 0,8% del total. -

During this study, we revised 4 subfamilies (Acontiinae, Agaristinae, Amphipyrinae, and Hadeninae). Based on material from the main reference collections in Egypt, light traps collections, National museums, and other references, 51 species in the 4 subfamilies (Acontiinae, Agaristinae, Amphipyrinae, Hadeninae) and 21 genera were listed. Some further taxonomic changed re-proposed. Taxonomic position, synonyms, and types are included and photographs for available species are provided. -

1 MOTHS OF AN ASPEN PARKLAND AREA 3 KM SOUTH OF NEVIS, ALBERTA, 2001-2005, 2011 update Charles Durham Bird, 8 March 2012 Box 22, Erskine, AB, T0C 1G0 [email protected] The present paper incorporates a number of redeterminations and additions to the information in the reports of 2007, 2008 and 2009. It also follows the up-to-date order and taxonomy of Pohl et al. (2010), rather than that of Hodges et al. (1983). THE AREA An area of rolling Aspen Parkland 3 km south of Nevis, Alberta, was studied repeatedly from 2001 to 2005. It was an acreage owned by Allen and Laura Hall. GPS readings for the area rounded off to 52.31 N and 113.05 W with an elevation of 890 m, though Google Earth readings were 52.186 N, 113.017 W and 812 m. Moths were collected with ultraviolet light traps on 42 different collection nights, details of which appear in the Appendix. Voucher specimens are in the BIRD Collection. Map showing the location of Nevis, Erskine, Stettler and Buffalo Lake in south-central Alberta. The present study area and the Buffalo Lake Moraine Conservation Area, which is on the east side of Buffalo Lake, are both examples of native Aspen Parkland. 2 While the grass in the acreage proper is mowed, natural areas of shrub and bush remain in and around the acreage. The traps were in all cases set up on the edge of the property so that they would be able to sample the moths in the adjoining, lightly grazed, native aspen parkland on land owned by the Church family.
