Dear Parents

You may have seen media reports about the second confirmed case of Human Swine Flu in WA. Catholic Schools continue to take precautions to contain the virus based on advice from the Department of Health.

Based on new advice from the Department of Health the following now applies:

Effective from Thursday 5 June 2009 students and school-based staff who have recently returned to WA from Victoria or the countries of concern (Mexico, USA, Canada, Japan and Panama) will be asked to voluntarily stay away from school for a period of seven days from their date of return.

This seven day exclusion period will now only apply where the student or staff member has travelled to Victoria or a country of concern. This exclusion does not apply to a child whose parent, relative or other close contact has returned from Victoria or a country of concern.

The seven day exclusion period does not apply to students or staff members who were transit passengers passing through any of those areas, where the transit period is less than 24 hours nor does it apply to students and staff who returned prior to the 5 June 2009.

Please advise the school office if your child has returned from Victoria or will be going to Victoria in the near future.

If students become unwell (i.e. Fever AND either cough, sore throat, runny or blocked nose), during this period of exclusion, please contact your GP or call HealthDirect on 1800 022 222.

For further information about swine flu generally, please call the Influenza Hotline on 180 2007 or visit the Department of Health website www.health.wa.gov.au. The list of countries of concern can be found on the Department of Health and Ageing website www.healthemergency.gov.au.

Jenny Hill (College Nurse) National Australia Geography Competition Year 10 students from John XXIII College demonstrated key geographical skills and knowledge in the 2009 National Geographic Channel Geographic Competition. Over 90000 students from all over Australia took part in this Competition and the College’s overall performance was very encouraging. 12 of our students gained High Distinctions, 9 gained Distinctions and another 20 students were awarded Credit certificates.

From the Year 8 Coordinator Year 8 Study Lab begins on Monday 8 June. This program is an after-school initiative of the counselling team and teachers at the College and was designed for a select group of students who have been referred for extra tuition and assistance with homework, organisation, research and assignment planning skills. Afternoon tea will be provided and students will be given personal assistance for the rest of Term 2 and all of Term 3. Thank you to Helen Aghdasi, Tim Bottrell, Eva-Maria Catina, Lee Boyett, Anita Sprigg, Peter Samuel, Annette Pedersen and Nitasha Horner for their assistance with Study Lab. This is another great example of the extra effort to which our College teachers will go to ensure each student reaches their potential.

Careers Corner School Holiday Study Workshops – Years 8-9 and Years 10-12 In the July holidays, ICS Training Group will be conducting 6 hour study/ learning skills workshops here at the College. Successful seminars have been conducted by ICS at other Catholic and AISWA schools in the region. All registrations, payments and coordination of the course is completed by ICS Training Group and there is a flyer attached to this newsletter for interested families.

The College has recently received a letter from Mr Itakura, the Principal of Fujimi High School cancelling the 2009 Exchange to John XXIII College:

Mr Itakura wrote: “To our deep regret, we have decided to cancel the home-stay program because of the worldwide flu. I really apologise for that. Our students were all looking forward to visiting your school. We very much regret that we had to decide to cancel. We would like you to understand our decision.”
