MAY 2017 President’s Report

Greetings,

I have been getting ready to set out on my holiday to South - the York Peninsula Cornish Festival. However last week received a number of calls that have needed attention. When I contacted Vic Quilters about the Travelling Suitcase exhibition our booking had been forgotten. As they wanted the Suitcase for exhibition at their Autumn gathering also 20th May we can’t have it for Quilt-In. We will have it for June Meeting - Biggest Quilting Bee- fundraising for Cancer research.

Then Anna Stevens our Quilt-In Co-ordinator had notice from City of Greater Geelong that due to a flood at South Barwon Hall some weeks prior we couldn’t have the hall as not yet repaired. So there were committee conversations and now the “Quilt in” will be at Geelong West Town Hall same day same time. Please give your support to Anna and the team, as it is a new location.

Then I received a call to let me know that one of our foundation members – Valda Moore had died. You will see an obituary elsewhere in this magazine. I went to the funeral Monday 8th May representing the guild and it was a great event.

Our June meeting is when I will see you all again. Let’s make it a good fundraising for Cancer research.

Here is a list of things to do: –  Decorate your table in Pink & Yellow.  Wear something Pink or Yellow.  Bring items for the Silent Auction:- - A mystery box, - A plant, - Or get your friend to group together to make a box.  Bring morning or afternoon tea to share.  Prepare a story, a song or a joke to tell as entertainment.  Show and tell is PINK or YELLOW.

Enjoy the Quilt-In and remember your SHOW AND TELL and Challenge Block on ‘Rotation’ theme.

Happy Quilting,

Margaret Tembo

President

May 2017 Editorial Sue Crewdson

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your submissions and comments for the newsletter, keep them coming. Don't forget about the deadline, you can always find this on pages 2 and 20. Deadline date is almost 2 weeks before Guild on the Monday. This is because the newsletter must be at the Printer by the Monday of Guild week and it takes several days, sometimes up to a week to prepare the newsletter. It can be difficult to fit unexpected items in if they don’t arrive by the deadline. If you are having trouble getting an item to me in time I am happy to extend that time by a couple of days for you if you call or email beforehand to let me know how much space your article is likely to require.

Don’t hesitate to call or email me if there is anything regarding the Newsletter you’d like to discuss. There is also the Suggestion Box at the front desk on Guild days if you have any suggestions for the newsletter or anything else you’d like the committee to consider.

Thanks,

Right: Quilts for my sister

(dragonflies) and her husband (Chevy cars and

Sue music) in Canberra.

I made these after attending Margaret Drayton’s ‘Batik Sunrise’ (pictured left) class at Jiddi’s Patch in November last year. It was a great introduction to Foundation Paper Piecing.

I believe this class will be running again on June 24th. Contact Jiddi’s Patch on 5298 2208 if interested.

MAY 2017 Website Report - Jodie www.geelongpatch.org.au Mobile:0411 206 034

Firstly this month I need to thank my little helper, Elliott. He was the official counter of the 6 ½ inch squares and my “Snipping Friend” for the making of the colourful wallets for Quilt-In. Kogo are asking for beanies to be knitted in Aboriginal colours: red, black, yellow. These will be distributed among Indigenous communities in Alice Springs in June. If you can help, please email Di to [email protected] Finally, don’t forget to look up the exhibition page to find the requirements for the coverlet challenge.

Cheers,

Jodie

JAPAN TRIP – Lyn Weeks

I had wanted to do a hands-on workshop in Japan, based on shibori & indigo. It was hard to find one that suited me as tours seemed to ‘experience’ an activity, which I know can mean ‘watch’.

But I found a fabulous one! Bryan Whitehead leads an 11 day workshop at his house, one and a half hours from Tokyo in the hills.

How divine! Bryan is a Canadian who has been living in Japan for nearly 30 years. His knowledge of traditional Japanese crafts is quite amazing. He had mailed us all some homework to do before arriving. I cut three stencils from layered persimmon tannin paper for our KATAZOME prints.

While there we visited a master stencil maker, printer and dyer. He can use one stencil for multiple prints, e.g. a kimono requires 30 metres of fabric, which is about 30cm wide. Stretched onto long boards, he is able to print the stencil abutting the last one and we could not see where he had done this. Not so with mine – ha! ha! I had just dyed my stencils and sensei rinsed it for me.

We learnt how to make an INDIGO vat.

My fingernails are still blue!

SHIBORI (shape resist dyeing) was a highlight. We made several articles using different techniques. The homework piece we had is my favourite, as it should be. This technique is called MOKUME. I did about 15,000 stitches before the workshop, but worth it …

Oh we did so many other things, such as basket weaving, visiting Tokyo for the Japan Folkcraft Museum and an antique fabric store, ikebana, KUMIHIMO silk braiding, SHIFUKU bag, tea ceremony.

The group was multi-national from Brazil, England, America, India and one other Australian. We all loved the program, including the food which was de-lish-ous.

One of the programs they deliver is a 100 day care package to families that have had a baby in a neonatal intensive care unit for 100 days. QUILTS TELL STORIES

The special display of Suze’s vintage quilts will surely have stories to tell, even if they are keeping them a secret. The coverlets in the challenge display will have new stories to tell, or maybe stories will grow as they each find a home. Will they become a doll’s bedspread, a wall hanging, a pillow cover??? I am looking forward to a wall of coverlets, so please consider joining this challenge.

Last month Marilyn outlined the general idea and rules of this year’s challenge. These are explained in the newsletter and on our webpage geelongpatch.org.au

These will be judged by three of our life members, resulting in three judged awards. There will also be a Member’s Choice Award. Challenge quilts are to be hung at our October meeting. (If you are not going to be at this meeting, you can give your quilt to a committee member, or friend to bring along for you.)

Hand Stitching Award:– This year’s hand stitching award will be judged by Pauline MacKenzie. Thanks to Pauline for accepting this role.

Raffle:- Height’s Sewing Centre is again being our generous sponsor for the raffle prizes. This year first prize will be a Horn 5 drawer rolla storage unit valued at $399. Second prize will be a Horn Gaslift chair valued at $229 & third prize will be a Quilter's essentials pack valued at over $165. Tickets will be on sale soon. Yahoo!!! I would love to win any of these.

GEELONG PATCHWORK AND QUILTERS’ GUILD INC. EXHIBITION CHALLENGE 2017 Doll’s Coverlet – 50cm by 50 cm At this year’s exhibition we are fortunate to have some older quilts as our feature display. To compliment these wonderful quilts our challenge is a Doll’s Coverlet.

Here are the rules for the Challenge: Size: 50cm by 50 cm. Definition: For the purpose of this challenge we are defining a coverlet as a cotton or linen top with a backing. Note – there is to be no batting or centre layer. Construction / techniques: Can be pieced, appliqued or embroidered. It can be machine stitched or hand worked and be of a traditional or modern design. Finishing: The Coverlet can be bagged out or have a binding and needs to be either quilted (hand or machine) or tied. Hanging: A hanging sleeve of 4 inches or 10cms needs to be attached to the back.

This is a judged section by three of the Guild’s life members and there will be Member’s Choice voting at the October meeting.

Congratulations to all those members entering, have fun with the theme.

Vale - Valda Moore 11th March 1932 to 21st April 2017

th On Monday 8 May I attended Valda’s funeral which was a great event at St Wilfrid’s Anglican Church at Mt Duneed. I knew Valda as she was a member of the Anglican church and friend of my family. Valda grew up in Colac and came to Geelong to study dressmaking at the Gordon and went on to teach sewing at the Gordon. She was well known for making wedding dresses. She married Bob an architect and in 1957 they immigrated to Canada for three years. In Canada she got a job designing costumes for the British Columbia anniversary celebrations, especially blankets of the 1st Nations people, which meant lots of research for this Aussie girl.

Bob and Valda retired to Freshwater Creek in 1991.

Valda was a formation member of Geelong Patchwork and Quilters Guild . She was involved in many quilting projects, especially 1988 Bi Centennial Banner. She loved getting her ‘Common Thread’ each month. There was a display of her projects in the refresh- ments ‘Bob Moore Room’ named after her husband. Her motto was ‘waste not want not’. She had many collections, photographs, plants and was a ‘Greeny’ before it was common. She enjoyed life. There were many great stories of her life from friends at her fu- neral. She died in her car at her front gate I believe on her way to exercise class.

Love you Valda and we will miss you.
