A History of Arakan (Past & Present) by Dr. Mohammed Yunus First Edition Published in 1994 A History of Arakan: Past and Present, by Dr. Mohammad Yunus, President of the Rohingya Solidarity Organisation (RSO), Arakan, is a a welcome addition to the present stock of our knowledge about the history of Arakan and her interrelation with neighbouring lands of Burma and Bengal. It deals mainly with the advent of Islam in Arakan about 800 C.E. and the eventual growth of Muslim community through thick and thin into a major Rohingya community of the country. One can say unhasitatingly that for the first time Dr. Yunus has been able to offer, even if in a skeleton form, a connected and continuous history of the Rohingya community of Arakan from the earliest down to the present time. He has explored an enormously wide field in digging up a great variety of new materials drawn from an impressive number of references. Specially commendable in this work is the forging of all the material under his command towards a new direction of studying the history of the Rohingya Muslim community in the perspective of the impact of Islamic civilization on Southeast Asia, not merely considering it as a part of the national or political history of Burma or Myanmar. Indeed, when we turn our gaze to the whole situation of Southeast Asia and find, to our amazement, the statistic of the Muslims exceeding 50% (fifty percent) of the total population of the region, we can easily realize the importance of the community history of the Muslims of different areas of the region. -

Odhikar is committed to defend the dignity, freedom and rights of the people of Bangladesh, as human beings as well as citizens, consistent with declarations, covenants, protocols and principles of human rights. Odhikar unconditionally stands for the victim and acts to bring offenders to justice. We investigate, expose and analyse human rights violations and hold abuser accountable. Odhikar does not essentialise human rights as abstract international laws but as historically achieved global consciousness and consensus to educate and organize oppressed people to fight inequality, injustice and discrimination, both individually and collectively. Odhikar considers the human rights movement in Bangladesh as constitutive of democracy and integral to the just struggle of the people of Bangladesh to have a democratic constitution and a state corresponding to it. THE ROHINGYA CRISIS IN MYANMAR Magnitude at a Global Scale Prof. Dr. Wakar Uddin Director General Arakan Rohingya Union Rohingya ethnic minority – indigenous people of Arakan The multiple waves of violence against Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar and the Government of Myanmar asking the international community not to use the term “Rohingya” have renewed the curiosity at the international stage – who are Rohingya? Rohingya people are indigenous to Arakan (re-named Rakhine state By the Myanmar military dictatorship) in the western region of Myanmar. They are one of the two major ethnic groups of Arakan, and the other Buddhist Rakhine, along with a relatively small numBer of other minorities such as Kamen, Daingnet, Mro, Thet, and others. The word “Rohingya” is derived from the word ‘Rohang,’ which was the original and ancient name of Arakan. In the medieval works of poets of Arakan and Chittagong regions, such as Alaol, Qazi Daulat, Mardan, Shamsher Ali, Ainuddin, ABdul Ghani and others, Arakan is freQuently referred to as Roshang, Roshango Des and Roshango Shar. Currently, the Rohingya Muslims numBer approximately 3 million worldwide. Due to the persecution, violence, and ethnic cleansing policy of the Government of Myanmar, nearly 1.5 million Rohingya, have Been forced out of their ancestral homeland and they are currently living in various parts of the world, including the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, Far East, Australia, Europe, and North America. The Government of Myanmar continues to fabricate the etymology of Rohingya and the demography of Arakan and denies their ethnic identity.
