The show is a hit due to Judy's superior puppeteering, but Punch's driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge. Long Synopsis In the anarchic town of Seaside, nowhere near the sea, puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit due to Judy's superior puppeteering, but Punch's driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge. In a visceral and dynamic live-action reinterpretation of the famous 16th century puppet show, writer director MIRRAH FOULKES turns the traditional story of Punch and Judy on its head and brings to life a fierce, darkly comic and epic female-driven revenge story, starring MIA WASIKOWSKA and DAMON HERRIMAN. 2 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT JUDY AND PUNCH is a dark, absurd fable treading a line between fairy-tale, fantasy and gritty realism, all of which work together to establish a unique tone while upsetting viewer expectations. When Vice Studios’ Eddy Moretti and Danny Gabai approached me with the idea of making a live action, feminist revenge film about Punch and Judy, they encouraged me to let my imagination go wild and take the story wherever I felt it needed to go.

  • Face to Face September 2012
Face to Face September 2012 www.FilmFestivalFlix.com Press Kit -- Draft #22A Press contact: Linda Brown / [email protected] 1 Synopsis Ten Australians from diverse backgrounds sit down to determine the fate of a violent young man. From Australia’s most acclaimed playwright, David Williamson, a moving and powerful film about lies, betrayal, sex and bullying in the workplace. A young construction worker rams into the back of his boss’s Jaguar in a fit of anger at being sacked. Rather than fronting court, he’s given the chance to explain his actions in a community conference. This face-to-face confrontation between the young man, his boss, his boss's wife, coworkers, best mate and mother, lifts the lid not only on his dysfunctional life but also on their workplace dirty laundry, turning all of their lives upside down. Face To Face stars a stellar ensemble cast led by Vince Colosimo, Sigrid Thornton and Luke Ford and is directed by Michael Rymer (Angel Baby). 2 DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT - Michael Rymer Be warned, this is a little movie, with big ideas. With all the strife in the world, human nature being what it is, and history not really offering any positive examples, I’ve often wondered if there’s any way out. When I see the terrible violence that’s inflicted on one generation against their enemies, ensuring the next generation will dish out the same in kind. I just look at neighbors and work colleagues and wonder, “If we can’t get past these smaller grudges and animosities, what hope do we have for the bigger ones?” I came upon this when an old friend was trying to explain this revolutionary work he was doing – he then emailed me a copy of a play that David Williamson had written on this very material.

  • And the Burden of Translation: Lilian's Story from Page to Screen
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by The University of Sydney: Sydney eScholarship Journals online “Impossible Speech” and the Burden of Translation: Lilian’s Story from Page to Screen ALICE HEALY, FLINDERS UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA In her witty “life narrative” which moves from birth to old age, the narrator of Kate Grenville’s Lilian’s Story offers an idea of history that exists in a reinvention of personal and collective memory through the minute observation of everyday life. At the end of a life which sees Lilian suffer the marginality of being a “fat” and “intelligent” girl in a post-Victorian society, Lilian defiantly rewrites—or re-stages—personal history through her streetside recitations of Shakespeare and subversions of a middle-class lady’s behaviour. She claims, “I have never cultivated the burden of memory.” This essay extends Lilian’s suggestion in order to problematise the “burden of translation” and its significance for recent ideas of history as performance, variously applied by writers from Greg Dening to Judith Butler. In Lilian’s words: History is not the past, but the present made flesh. I saw more, as I became older, fatter, more easily tired. Look, I told myself, moving up William Street, and when I looked around I saw the window of an abandoned brothel, that was broken in the shape of a map of Australia. Look… Listen, I told myself, this is history. (253) The insistence on “presentness” in Lilian’s words carry the weight of the “burden of translation”—what is not said; what resonates; what is disconnected from the moment of speech.
