A message from the Editor: Welcome once more to a new Birds and Natural History catalog. This year there’s a particularly rich spread of titles reflecting the growing diversity of the list here at Princeton. It’s a delight to have a new edition of Hadoram Shirihai’s The Complete Guide to Antarctic Wildlife, which has become established as the go-to reference for all visitors, combining a wealth of illustration and an authoritative, detailed text. In our own backyard, Duane Sept’s A Photographic Guide to Seashore Life in the North Atlantic provides a beautifully illustrated, great-value guide for all levels of beachcomber from Canada to New England. Sharon Chester’s A Wildlife Guide to Chile sets new standards in dedicated country guides with an impressive blend of insightful and informative text and wonderfully attractive illustrations and photographs, tackling , birds, , and , fish, and much more.

We also have two important and timely new guides, Smith and Xie’s A Guide to the Mammals of China and Charles Francis’ s A Guide to the Mammals of . These two references are the first to provide up-to-the-minute information on the threatened mammal fauna of these regions, both of which are rich in species but under acute environmental pressure. Changing pace, we also have a terrific book on by Paul Hillyard. The Private Life of Spiders provides a fascinating insight into the extraordinary natural history of spiders across the globe, and is illustrated with breathtak- ing photographs. And not to forget the birds, we have two new titles for our Princeton Field Guide series to be published later this year: Birds of Mongolia and Birds of East Asia, both of which will plug real holes in our coverage of the world’s avifauna.

Life in Cold Blood offers a rare glimpse into the peculiar world of amphibians and reptiles, the first vertebrate creatures to venture forth from the primeval waters millions of years ago, yet which today include species that are the most at risk of . Join acclaimed naturalist Sir David Attenborough as he travels to the far corners of the to tell the epic story of these animals in this companion to the television series. Attenborough gets up close and personal with the living descendants of the first vertebrates ever to colonize the land, and through them traces the fascinating history of their pioneering ancestors. He explains the ways amphibians and reptiles have changed little from their prehistoric forebears while also demonstrating how they have adapted and evolved into diverse new forms.

Sir David Attenborough is one of the best-loved naturalists of our time. He is the author of numerous books and has hosted many world-renowned and award-winning natural history documentaries.

“The books are compact, convenient guides for birders and scientists interested in identifying birds while visiting the regions. Their small, lightweight sizes make for easy packing and carrying in the back pocket while trudging around the countryside. They are the perfect alternative to the larger guides that are too large for travelling and often have more information than is necessary for field identification.” —Condor Series Features Include: u The most up-to-date and comprehensive checklists to over 3,000 species across much of Africa, , and , about a third of the world total u Color plates illustrating all species, with subspecies and variations included for many u Text opposite the plates concisely describes each ’s physical features, behavior, habitat, and voice u Female or juvenile shown for many species in addition to adult male u Shaded maps showing range and frequency of each species

New Birds of , Russia, China, and : Tyrant Flycatchers to Buntings Written and Illustrated by Norman Arlott

This is the first of two field guides illustrating and describing all of the approximately 1,800 bird species found in the Palearctic—the huge region that includes Europe, Asia north of the Himalayas, and Africa north of the Sahara. This area spans the countries of the former Soviet Union, all of the Russian , China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East excluding the Gulf countries. This first volume covers all the passerines (perching birds, from tyrant flycatchers to buntings) or songbirds and will soon be followed by a companion guide to the nonpasserines (divers to ). These volumes are the first and only field guides for many parts of the area covered, and mark the first time all of these birds have been included in a single pair of books.

Norman Arlott, one of the world’s leading bird artists, has illustrated close to 100 books, and his artwork regularly appears in magazines. He has led tours in , and has designed special bird stamp issues for many countries, including Jamaica, the Bahamas, Gambia, and Malawi.

Duane Sept covers more than 225 common intertidal species found on rocky shores, sandy shores, mud beaches, and floating docks, and explains the natural history of these specialized organisms. Forthcoming Exploring Animal Social Networks Darren P. Croft, Richard James & Jens Krause

“An important and timely addition to the literature. This book should be readily accessible to researchers who are interested in animal social organization but who have little or no experience in conducting network analysis. The book is well-written in an engaging style and contains a good number of examples drawn from a range of taxonomic groups.” —Paul R. Moorcroft, Harvard University

Existing methods for studying animal social structure focus either on one animal and its interactions or on the average properties of a whole population. This book enables researchers to probe animal social structure at all levels, from the individual to the population. No prior knowledge of network theory is assumed. The authors give a step-by-step introduction to the different procedures and offer ideas for designing studies, collecting data, and interpreting results. The authors examine some of today’s most sophisticated statistical tools for social network analysis and show how they can be used to study social interactions in animals including cetaceans, ungulates, , insects, and fish. They explore how network structures influence individual behavior and how this in turn influences, and is influenced by, behavior at the population level. Throughout, the authors use two software pack- ages—Un i c e t and Ne t Dr a w —to illustrate how these powerful analytical tools can be applied to different animal social organizations.

Darren P. Croft is lecturer in animal behavior at the University of Wales, Bangor. Richard James is senior lecturer in physics at the University of Bath. Jens Krause is professor of behavioral ecology at the University of Leeds.
